Time-variant species pools shape competitive dynamics and biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships

Species pool size and rainfall account for the relationship between biodiversity and biomass production in natural forests of China

The strength of biodiversity–biomass production relationships increases with increasing environmental stress and time. However, we know little about the effects of abiotic (e.g., climate) and biotic (e.g., species pool and community composition) factors on this trend. Whether variation in biomass production is best explained by phylogenetic diversity metrics or traditional measures of species richness also remains elusive. We compiled estimates of community composition and biomass production for tree species in 111 permanent quadrats spanning three natural forests (tropical, subtropical, and temperate) in China. Based on ~10 years of data, we compared temperature, rainfall, species pool size, and community composition in each forest each year. We estimated species richness and phylogenetic diversity in each quadrat each year; the latter metric was based on the sum of branch lengths of a phylogeny that connects species in each quadrat each year. Using generalized linear mixed‐effect models, we found that top‐ranked models included the interaction between forest and biodiversity and the interaction between forest and year for both biodiversity metrics. Variation in biomass production was best explained by phylogenetic diversity; biomass production generally increased with phylogenetic diversity, and the relationship was stronger in subtropical and temperate forests. Increasing species pool size, temperature, and rainfall and decreasing inter‐quadrat dissimilarity range shifted the relationship between biomass production and phylogenetic diversity from positive to neutral. When considered alone, species pool size had the strongest influence on biomass production, while species pool size, rainfall, and their interaction with phylogenetic diversity constituted the top‐ranked model. Our study highlights the importance of species pool size and rainfall on the relationship between phylogenetic diversity and biomass production in natural forest ecosystems.

Diversity of Bacteria in Lakes with Different Chlorophyll Content and Investigation of Their Respiratory Activity through a Long-Term Microcosm Experiment

Bacterial community structure and metabolism are critical factors for ecosystem functioning since they affect remineralization of nutrients and carbon flow. We used Illumina sequencing of 16SrRNA V3-V4 regions to investigate whether bacterial assemblage composition differs between four samples from two lakes in the geographic region of Epirus (Greece) characterized by distinct oligotrophic to eutrophic/hypereutrophic conditions as revealed by chlorophyll-a values. We found high similarity (>60%) for bacterial assemblages recovered from the two lakes when eutrophic/hypereutrophic conditions prevailed. Distinct bacterial communities appeared in oligotrophic and mesotrophic waters. Low temperature was occasionally an important factor in shaping the bacterial community. In parallel, microcosm experiments were performed to estimate respiration rates of bacterioplankton at in situ temperature and under a 2 °C temperature increase scenario. Differently assembled communities were found to display similar rates except under hypereutrophic conditions when respiration increased significantly, leading to hypoxic conditions. Temperature increase did not affect respiration rates. Overall this study indicated a clear differentiation of bacterial communities between sites of different trophic state. However, different communities responded similarly under a specific range of chlorophyll-a values and resisted small scale temperature perturbations. Different results were found for hypereutrophic conditions and this has implications for ecosystems functioning, given the increasing occurrence of eutrophication events.

Linking the development and functioning of a carnivorous pitcher plant's microbial digestive community

Ecosystem development theory predicts that successional turnover in community composition can influence ecosystem functioning. However, tests of this theory in natural systems are made difficult by a lack of replicable and tractable model systems. Using the microbial digestive associates of a carnivorous pitcher plant, I tested hypotheses linking host age-driven microbial community development to host functioning. Monitoring the yearlong development of independent microbial digestive communities in two pitcher plant populations revealed a number of trends in community succession matching theoretical predictions. These included mid-successional peaks in bacterial diversity and metabolic substrate use, predictable and parallel successional trajectories among microbial communities, and convergence giving way to divergence in community composition and carbon substrate use. Bacterial composition, biomass, and diversity positively influenced the rate of prey decomposition, which was in turn positively associated with a host leaf's nitrogen uptake efficiency. Overall digestive performance was greatest during late summer. These results highlight links between community succession and ecosystem functioning and extend succession theory to host-associated microbial communities.

Defining the functional traits that drive bacterial decomposer community productivity

Microbial communities are essential to a wide range of ecologically and industrially important processes. To control or predict how these communities function, we require a better understanding of the factors which influence microbial community productivity. Here, we combine functional resource use assays with a biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (BEF) experiment to determine whether the functional traits of constituent species can be used to predict community productivity. We quantified the abilities of 12 bacterial species to metabolise components of lignocellulose and then assembled these species into communities of varying diversity and composition to measure their productivity growing on lignocellulose, a complex natural substrate. A positive relationship between diversity and community productivity was caused by a selection effect whereby more diverse communities were more likely to contain two species that significantly improved community productivity. Analysis of functional traits revealed that the observed selection effect was primarily driven by the abilities of these species to degrade β-glucan. Our results indicate that by identifying the key functional traits underlying microbial community productivity we could improve industrial bioprocessing of complex natural substrates.
