Evidence that eye-facing photophores serve as a reference for counterillumination in an order of deep-sea fishes

Systematic Distribution of Bioluminescence in Marine Animals: A Species-Level Inventory

Bioluminescence is the production of visible light by an organism. This phenomenon is particularly widespread in marine animals, especially in the deep sea. While the luminescent status of numerous marine animals has been recently clarified thanks to advancements in deep-sea exploration technologies and phylogenetics, that of others has become more obscure due to dramatic changes in systematics (themselves triggered by molecular phylogenies). Here, we combined a comprehensive literature review with unpublished data to establish a catalogue of marine luminescent animals. Inventoried animals were identified to species level in over 97% of the cases and were associated with a score reflecting the robustness of their luminescence record. While luminescence capability has been established in 695 genera of marine animals, luminescence reports from 99 additional genera need further confirmation. Altogether, these luminescent and potentially luminescent genera encompass 9405 species, of which 2781 are luminescent, 136 are potentially luminescent (e.g., suggested luminescence in those species needs further confirmation), 99 are non-luminescent, and 6389 have an unknown luminescent status. Comparative analyses reveal new insights into the occurrence of luminescence among marine animal groups and highlight promising research areas. This work will provide a solid foundation for future studies related to the field of marine bioluminescence.

Mesopelagic fishes of the North-West African Upwelling from the Discovery Collections

Background

Mesopelagic fish specimens from two stations in the NW African Upwelling were identified and catalogued to produce a Darwin Core-aligned dataset. A total of 9655 individual fishes were identified, with 9017 specimens identified at least to genus level and 3124 specimens identified to species level. This dataset comprises specimens collected from the 1990 RRS Discovery (III) Cruise D195 and was used to investigate depth-related trends in diversity and community composition alongside species-specific migratory behaviour. The finalised dataset was published on OBIS through the Deep-Sea node.

New information

This dataset contains occurrence and abundance data for midwater fishes caught between the Mauritanian coast and Cape Verde, published for the first time. The dataset records 146 different fish taxa. Twenty-three taxa in the dataset are not present in any prior OBIS datasets that cover the area. These novel taxa are: Bathylagusandriashevi, Bolinichthysindicus, Bolinichthyssupralateralis, Cyclothoneparapallida, Dolichopteroidesbinocularis, Gigantactis indet. Gymnoscopelus stet., Howellaatlantica, Hygophumproximum, Hygophumtaaningi, Ichthyococcuspolli, Lampadenaanomala, Lampanyctuscuprarius, Lampanyctusisaacsi, Lampanyctuslineatus, Lampanyctusmacdonaldi, Lampanyctusnobilis, Lestidiopsmirabilis, Loweinarara, Macroparalepisbrevis, Melamphaesmicrops and Melanonusgracilis. An anglerfish specimen belonging to Linophrynidae was also found, the first in the leftvent family to be logged in the area on OBIS; however, the specimen was too damaged to identify beyond this level.

An Investigation into the Mechanism Mediating Counterillumination in Myctophid Fishes (Myctophidae)

AbstractCounterillumination is a camouflage strategy employed primarily by mesopelagic fishes, sharks, crustaceans, and squid, which use ventral bioluminescence to obscure their silhouettes when viewed from below. Although certain counterilluminating species have been shown to control the intensity of their ventral emissions to match the background downwelling light, the feedback mechanism mediating this ability is poorly understood. One proposed mechanism involves the presence and use of eye-facing photophores that would allow simultaneous detection and comparison of photophore emissions and downwelling solar light. Eye-facing photophores have been found in at least 34 species of counterilluminating stomiiform fishes and the myctophid Tarletonbeania crenularis. Here, we examined nine phylogenetically spaced myctophid species for eye-facing photophores to assess whether this mechanism is as prevalent in this group as it is in the Stomiiformes. First, microcomputed tomography imaging data were collected for each species, and three-dimensional reconstructions of the fishes were developed to identify potential eye-facing photophores. The fishes were then dissected under a stereomicroscope to confirm the presence of all identified photophores, probe for any photophores missed in the reconstruction analysis, and determine the orientation of the photophores' emissions. Although photophores were identified near the orbits of all species examined, none of the fishes' photophores directed light into their orbits, suggesting that myctophids may regulate bioluminescence through an alternative mechanism.

Tracing the evolution of bioluminescent light organs across the deep-sea shrimp family Sergestidae using a genomic skimming and phylogenetic approach

Deep-sea shrimp of the family Sergestidae Dana, 1852 provide a unique system for studying the evolution of bioluminescence. Most species within the family possess autogenic bioluminescent photophores in one of three distinct forms: lensed photophores; non-lensed photophores; or internal organs of Pesta. This morphological diversity across the Sergestidae has resulted in recent major taxonomic revisions, dividing the two major genera (Sergia Stimpson, 1860 and Sergestes Milne Edwards, 1830) into 15. The present study capitalises on molecular data to construct an updated genus-level phylogeny of sergestid shrimp. DNA was successfully extracted from ~87 individuals belonging to 13 of the 15 newly proposed genera. A ‘genome skimming’ approach was implemented, allowing the capture of mitochondrial genomic data across 19 sergestid species. Additional individuals have been incorporated into the phylogeny through Sanger sequencing of both nuclear (H3 and NAK) and mitochondrial (16S and COI) genes. The resulting molecular phylogeny is compared with previous morphological trees with specific attention to genus-level relationships. The -sergestes group was rendered non-monophyletic and the -sergia group was recovered as monophyletic. Ancestral state reconstructions of light organ type indicate that organs of Pesta is the ancestral state for the family. Non-lensed photophores evolved once across the -sergia group, but were later lost in the deepest living genus, Sergia. Lensed photophores also evolved once within the genera Prehensilosergia Vereshchaka, Olesen & Lunina, 2014, Lucensosergia Vereshchaka, Olesen & Lunina, 2014 and Challengerosergia Vereshchaka, Olesen & Lunina, 2014. These findings identify preliminary patterns across light organ type and species’ depth distributions; however, future research that incorporates finer-scale depth data and more species is needed to confirm our findings.
