Rotation-Free Based Numerical Model for Nonlinear Analysis of Thin Shells

This paper presents a computationally efficient numerical model for the analysis of thin shells based on rotation-free triangular finite elements. The geometry of the structure in the vicinity of the observed triangular element is approximated through a controlled domain consisting of nodes of the observed finite element and nodes of three adjacent finite elements between which a second-order spatial polynomial is defined. The model considers large displacements, large rotations, small strains, and material and geometrical nonlinearity. Material nonlinearity is implemented by considering the von Mises yield criterion and the Levi–Mises flow rule. The model uses an explicit time integration scheme to integrate motion equations but an implicit radial returning algorithm to compute the plastic strain at the end of each time step. The presented numerical model has been embedded in the program Y based on the finite–discrete element method and tested on simple examples. The advantage of the presented numerical model is displayed through a series of analyses where the obtained results are compared with other results presented in the literature.

Analysis of the evolution of granular stress-strain and voidage states based on DEM simulations

We review and discuss the results of our granular-dynamics simulations of the time evolution of the microstructure of compact granular beds as found in pouring, in hopper filling and discharge, and in a shear cell. These systems are mainly quasi-static. However, it is also common to encounter localized 'shear zones' with significant velocity/voidage fluctuations and high bulk-strain gradients. These narrow-banded zones are separated from near-static regions by sharp, discontinuous changes of bulk stress and voidage. Within these bands the granular assembly undergoes a transition from the quasi-static to the inertial state, where enduring particle contacts are increasingly replaced by collisional ones. We focus on the discrete particle origins of this inhomogeneous yield/flow behaviour. We show the usefulness of analysing the local evolution in terms of relative rotation of the grains which is observed to cause rapid local bulk dilation responsible for setting off avalanches near free-surface boundaries and protracted bulk-failure planes in confined static assemblies. We also present some evidence to suggest that allowing for effective continuous particle-particle interactions could approximate observed effects attributable to particle shape and surface roughness. Wavelet analyses have been applied successfully to generate the variations in periodicity and the relative sequence of evolution of the stress, strain-rate and voidage states in avalanching granular heaps and in the wall region of axially symmetric hopper flows.

Discrete-element modelling: methods and applications in the environmental sciences

This paper introduces a Theme Issue on discrete-element modelling, based on research presented at an interdisciplinary workshop on this topic organized by the National Institute of Environmental e-Science. The purpose of the workshop, and this collection of papers, is to highlight the opportunities for environmental scientists provided by (primarily) off-lattice methods in the discrete-element family, and to draw on the experiences of research communities in which the use of these methods is more advanced. Applications of these methods may be conceived in a wide range of situations where dynamic processes involve a series of fundamental entities (particles or elements) whose interaction results in emergent macroscale structures. Indeed, the capacity of these methods to reveal emergent properties at the meso- and macroscale, that reflect microscale interactions, is a significant part of their attraction. They assist with the definition of constitutive material properties at scales beyond those at which measurement and theory have been developed, and help us to understand self-organizing behaviours. The paper discusses technical issues including the contact models required to represent collision behaviour, computational aspects of particle tracking and collision detection, and scales at which experimental data are required and choices about modelling style must be made. It then illustrates the applicability of DEM and other forms of individual-based modelling in environmental and related fields as diverse as mineralogy, geomaterials, mass movement and fluvial sediment transport processes, as well as developments in ecology, zoology and the human sciences where the relationship between individual behaviour and group dynamics can be explored using a partially similar methodological framework.

The modelling of particle systems with real shapes

The numerical modelling of particulate processes in environmental science increasingly requires an ability to represent the properties of individual natural particles. Considerable advances have been made in discontinuum modelling using spheres to represent particles. In this paper, we discuss recent developments that illustrate a way forward for tackling the complexity of realistically shaped bodies such as those exhibited by rock fragments. To address the validation of such approaches, we present a comparison of cube-packing experiments and their equivalent numerical simulation. Sensitivity to initial conditions, highlighted for non-spherical bodies, enters the discussion of problems with validation of numerical simulation. The algorithmic details behind these advances in modelling large systems of realistically shaped particles are summarized in our companion paper in this volume.
