Photokinetic analysis of the forces and torques exerted by optical tweezers carrying angular momentum

Anti-Symmetric Medium Chirality Leading to Symmetric Field Helicity in Response to a Pair of Circularly Polarized Plane Waves in Counter-Propagating Configuration

We examine how a chiral medium responds to a pair of plane waves of circular polarizations. To this goal, we assume the chiral medium to be spatially homogeneous for simplicity. By assuming the medium to be a lossless, we provide analytic formulas of key bilinear parameters such as the pair of electromagnetic and reactive Poynting vectors in addition to the pair of electromagnetic and reactive helicities. By examining two obliquely colliding plane waves, we learned that most of those key parameters are asymmetric with respect to the medium chirality. Only for a counter-propagating pair, some of those key parameters are found to exhibit symmetry with respect to the medium chirality. We will discuss the implications of those asymmetries and symmetries from the viewpoints of typical applications in optics and physics.

Brownian dynamics simulations of sphere clusters in optical tweezers

Computationally modeling the behavior of wavelength-sized non-spherical particles in optical tweezers can give insight into the existence and stability of trapping equilibria as well as the optical manipulation of such particles more broadly. Here, we report Brownian dynamics simulations of non-spherical particles that account for detailed optical, hydrodynamic, and thermal interactions. We use a T-matrix formalism to calculate the optical forces and torques exerted by focused laser beams on clusters of wavelength-sized spheres, and we incorporate detailed diffusion tensors that capture the anisotropic Brownian motion of the clusters. For two-sphere clusters whose size is comparable to or larger than the wavelength, we observe photokinetic effects in elliptically-polarized beams. We also demonstrate that multiple trapping equilibria exist for a highly asymmetric chiral cluster of seven spheres. Our simulations may lead to practical suggestions for optical trapping and manipulation as well as a deeper understanding of the underlying physics.

Above and beyond: holographic tracking of axial displacements in holographic optical tweezers

How far a particle moves along the optical axis in a holographic optical trap is not simply dictated by the programmed motion of the trap, but rather depends on an interplay of the trap's changing shape and the particle's material properties. For the particular case of colloidal spheres in optical tweezers, holographic video microscopy reveals that trapped particles tend to move farther along the axial direction than the traps that are moving them and that different kinds of particles move by different amounts. These surprising and sizeable variations in axial placement can be explained by a dipole-order theory for optical forces. Their discovery highlights the need for real-time feedback to achieve precise control of colloidal assemblies in three dimensions and demonstrates that holographic microscopy can meet that need.

Tailoring Optical Gradient Force and Optical Scattering and Absorption Force

The introduction of the concept of gradient force and scattering and absorption force is an important milestone in optical trapping. However the profiles of these forces are usually unknown, even for standard setups. Here, we successfully calculated them analytically via multipole expansion and numerically via Mie theory and fast Fourier transform. The former provides physical insight, while the latter is highly accurate and efficient. A recipe to create truly conservative energy landscapes is presented. These may open up qualitatively new features in optical manipulation.

Non-conservative optical forces

Undoubtedly, laser tweezers are the most recognized application of optically induced mechanical action. Their operation is usually described in terms of conservative forces originating from intensity gradients. However, the fundamental optical action on matter is non-conservative. We will review different manifestations of non-conservative optical forces (NCF) and discuss their dependence on the specific spatial properties of optical fields that generate them. New developments relevant to the NCF such as tractor beams and transversal forces are also discussed.

Optical orbital angular momentum

We present a brief introduction to the orbital angular momentum of light, the subject of our theme issue and, in particular, to the developments in the 13 years following the founding paper by Allen et al. (Allen et al. 1992 Phys. Rev. A 45, 8185 (doi:10.1103/PhysRevA.45.8185)). The papers by our invited authors serve to bring the field up to date and suggest where developments may take us next.This article is part of the themed issue 'Optical orbital angular momentum'.
