Analysis of Field of View for a Moon-Based Earth Observation Multispectral Camera

A Moon-based Earth observation multispectral camera provides a unique perspective for observing large-scale Earth phenomena. This study focuses on the analysis of the field of view (FOV) for such a sensor. Unlike space-borne sensors, the analysis of the FOV for a Moon-based sensor takes into account not only Earth's maximum apparent diameter as seen from the lunar surface but also the Earth's and the solar trajectory in the lunar sky, as well as the pointing accuracy and pointing adjustment temporal intervals of the turntable. Three critical issues are analyzed: (1) The relationship between the Earth's apparent diameter and the Earth's phase angle is revealed. It is found that the Earth's maximum apparent diameter encompasses the Earth's full phase, suggesting the FOV should exceed this maximum. (2) Regardless of the location on the lunar surface, a sensor will suffer from solar intrusion every orbital period. Although the Earth's trajectory forms an envelope during an 18.6-year cycle, the FOV should not be excessively large. (3) To design a reasonable FOV, it is necessary to consider both the pointing accuracy and pointing adjustment temporal interval comprehensively. All these insights will guide future Moon-based Earth observation multispectral camera design.

Directional Aspects of Vegetation Linear and Circular Polarization Biosignatures

Homochirality is a generic and unique property of all biochemical life and it is considered a universal and agnostic biosignature. Upon interaction with unpolarized light, homochirality induces fractional circular polarization in the light that is scattered from it, which can be sensed remotely. As such, it can be a prime candidate biosignature in the context of future life detection missions and observatories. The linear polarizance of vegetation is also sometimes envisaged as a biosignature, although it does not share the same molecular origin as circular polarization. It is known that linear polarization of surfaces is strongly dependent on the phase angle. The relationship between the phase angle and circular polarization stemming from macromolecular assemblies such as in vegetation, however, remained unclear. In this study, using the average of 27 different species, we demonstrate that the circular polarization-phase angle dependency of vegetation induces relatively small changes in spectral shape and mostly affects the signal magnitude. With these results, we underline the use of circular spectropolarimetry as a promising agnostic biosignature complementary to the use of linear spectropolarimetry and scalar reflectance.

Simulation of Earth’s Outward Radiative Flux and Its Radiance in Moon-Based View

To study the Earth’s energy balance and to extend exoplanet research, the Earth’s outward radiative flux and its radiance in the Moon-based view were simulated according to the Earth–Sun–Moon geometry model, with the help of ERA5. A framework was developed to identify the angular distribution model (ADM) of Earth’s surface and its scene types, according to the surface and atmospheric data from ERA5. Our simulation shows that the specific viewing geometry controls the periodical variations in the Moon-based view radiative flux and its radiance, which reflect the orbital period of the Moon. The seasonal variations in shortwave and longwave radiative flux follow the energy balance in general, which is probably influenced by the Earth albedo. The derived global ADM would help to identify the anisotropic factor of observations at DSCOVR. Our simulations prove that Moon-based observation is a valuable source for Earth observation and that the orbital information of exoplanets could be derived from the radiance observation.
