Lactiplantibacillus paraxiangfangensis sp. nov., isolated from traditional Chinese pickle

Three Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains (designated 231-9T, 142-6 and 463-4) were isolated from traditional Chinese pickle, and were characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strains 231-9T, 142-6 and 463-4 were phylogenetically related to the type strains of Lactiplantibacillus xiangfangensis, Lactiplantibacillus garii, Lactiplantibacillus carotarum, Lactiplantibacillus plajomi and Lactiplantibacillus modestisalitolerans, having 98.6-99.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities. Strains 231-9T, 142-6 and 463-4 were most closely related to the type strain of L. xiangfangensis, having 99.9 % 16S rRNA gene, 95.6 % pheS, 99.4 % rpoA and 98.2 % concatenated pheS and rpoA sequence similarities. Relatively low pheS (95.6 %) sequence similarity indicated that strain 231-9T should be further identified. Strain 231-9T shared 99.7-99.9 % average nucleotide identity (ANI) and 98.8-98.9 % digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values with strains 142-6 and 463-4, indicating that they belonged to the same species. The ANI and dDDH values between strain 231-9T and L. xiangfangensis LMG 26013T were 92.4-92.9 and 49.6 %, respectively, less than the threshold for species demarcation (95-96% ANI and 70 % dDDH values, respectively), indicating that strains 231-9T, 142-6 and 463-4 represented a novel species within the genus Lactiplantibacillus. Acid production from d-ribose, d-adonitol, d-galactose and lactose, activity of β-galactosidase and β-glucosidase, Voges-Proskauer reaction, hydrolysis of hippurate, resistance to 5 µg ml-1 erythromycin, 100 µg ml-1 tetracycline hydrochloride, 50 µg ml-1 bacitracin, 300 µg ml-1 each of gentamicin sulphate, streptomycin sulphate and neomycin sulphate, tolerance to 6 % NaCl could distinguish strains 231-9T, 142-6 and 463-4 from L. xiangfangensis 3.1.1T. Based upon the data of polyphasic characterization obtained in the present study, a novel species, Lactiplantibacillus paraxiangfangensis sp. nov., is proposed and the type strain is 231-9T (=JCM 36258T=CCTCC AB 2023133T).

Lactiplantibacillus brownii sp. nov., a novel psychrotolerant species isolated from sauerkraut

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic and homofermentative strain, named WILCCON 0030T, was isolated from sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) collected from a local market in the Moscow region of Russia. Comparative analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and whole genome relatedness indicated that strain WILCCON 0030T was most closely related to the type strains Lactiplantibacillus nangangensis NCIMB 15186T, Lactiplantibacillus daoliensis LMG 31171T and Lactiplantibacillus pingfangensis LMG 31176T. However, the average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization prediction values with these closest relatives only ranged from 84.6 to 84.9 % and from 24.1 to 24.7 %, respectively, and were below the 95.0 and 70.0% thresholds for species delineation. Substantiated by further physiological and biochemical analyses, strain WILCCON 0030T represents a novel species within the genus Lactiplantibacillus for which we propose the name Lactiplantibacillus brownii sp. nov. (type strain WILCCON 0030T=DSM 116485T=LMG 33211T).

Lentilactobacillus laojiaonis sp. nov., isolated from the mud in a fermentation cellar for the production of Chinese liquor

A novel Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterial strain, designated IM3328T, was isolated from a mud cellar which has been continuously used over hundreds of years for the fermentative production of Chinese strong-flavour baijiu. It is asporogenous, facultative anaerobic and does not exhibit catalase activity. Strain IM3328T can grow at pH 4.5–8.5 (optimum, pH 7.0), 15–45 °C (optimum, 37 °C), with 0–75% (w/v) ethanol with and 0–6% (w/v) NaCl. The API 50CH assay revealed that strain IM3328T can metabolize l-arabinose, d-ribose, d-xylose, d-glucose, d-fructose, d-mannose, N-acetylglucosamine, gluconate, methyl β-d-pyranoside, methyl α-d-glucopyranoside, methyl α-d-glucopyranoside and raffinose among the 49 studied carbon sources. Lactic acid, acetic acid, ethanol, isopentanol and butyl acetate are he predominant metabolites in the fermentation broth of strain IM3328T when cultured in liquid de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe medium under micro-aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The polar lipids of strain IM3328T consist of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified phospholipid, two unidentified glycolipids and two unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids (≥10%) consist of C16 : 0, C18:1 ω9c and summed feature 7. The cell wall contains ribose, glucose, galactose, lysine, alanine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid. The complete genome of strain IM3328T contains a circular chromosome of 1242019 bp with 1242 genes and 33 mol% G+C content. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic tree, Lentilactobacillus senioris DSM 24302T (95.9% similarity), Lentilactobacillus rapi DSM 19907T (95.7% similarity) and Lentilactobacillus parabuchneri DSM 5707T (95.1% similarity) were chosen to compare with strain IM3328T to reveal the physiological differences. The low average nucleotide identity values (69.7–71.2%) between strain IM3328T and phylogenetically related reference strains demonstrated that this strain represents a novel species of the genus Lentilactobacillus , and the name Lentilactobacillus laojiaonis sp. nov. (type strain IM3328T=CGMCC 1.18832T=JCM 34630T) is proposed.

Apilactobacillus nanyangensis sp. nov., Secundilactobacillus hailunensis sp. nov., Secundilactobacillus yichangensis sp. nov., Levilactobacillus andaensis sp. nov., Levilactobacillus wangkuiensis sp. nov., Levilactobacillus lanxiensis sp. nov., Lacticaseibacillus mingshuiensis sp. nov. and Lacticaseibacillus suilingensis sp. nov., isolated from traditional Chinese pickle and the gut of honeybee (Apis mellifera)

Thirteen Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains were isolated from Chinese traditional pickle and the gut of honeybee (Apis mellifera). These strains were characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The data demonstrated that 12 of the 13 strains represented eight novel species belonging to the genera Apilactobacillus, Secundilactobacillus, Levilactobacillus and Lacticaseibacillus; strains HN36-1^T, 887-11^T, F79-211-2^T, 866-3^T, 6-5(1)^T, 13B17^T, 117-1^T and ZW152^T were designated as the type strains. Based upon the data of polyphasic characterization obtained in the present study, eight novel species, Apilactobacillus nanyangensis sp. nov., Secundilactobacillus hailunensis sp. nov., Secundilactobacillus yichangensis sp. nov., Levilactobacillus andaensis sp. nov., Levilactobacillus wangkuiensis sp. nov., Levilactobacillus lanxiensis sp. nov., Lacticaseibacillus mingshuiensis sp. nov. and Lacticaseibacillus suilingensis sp. nov., are proposed and the type strains are HN36-1^T (=JCM 33867^T=CCTCC AB 2019385^T), 887-11^T (=NCIMB 15201^T=CCM 8950^T=JCM 33864^T=CCTCC AB 2018396^T), F79-211-2^T (=NCIMB 15254^T=JCM 33866^T=CCTCC AB 2019384^T), 866-3^T (=JCM 33863^T=CCTCC AB 2019383^T), 6-5(1)^T (=NCIMB 15229^T=CCM 8977^T=JCM 33564^T=CCTCC AB 2019168^T), 13B17^T (=NCIMB 15230^T=CCM 8979^T=JCM 33565^T=CCTCC AB 2019167^T), 117-1^T (=NCIMB 15232^T=CCM 8980^T=JCM 33567^T) and ZW152^T (=JCM 34363^T=CCTCC AB 2020299^T=LMG 32143^T=CCM 9110^T), respectively.

Leuconostoc falkenbergense sp. nov., isolated from a lactic culture, fermentating string beans and traditional yogurt

In the present study, the taxonomic positions of five strains (C, 17-2, LMG 10779^T, LMG 18969 and LMG 11483) of Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides were re-evaluated by a polyphasic approach, including the analyses of 16S rRNA, pheS and rpoA gene sequences, cellular fatty acids, average nucleotide and amino acid identities (ANI and AAI), digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), and phenotypic features. Based on rpoA sequence analysis, the five strains and L. pseudomesenteroides LMG 11482^T were divided into two groups: strains C, LMG 10779^T and LMG 18969; strains 17-2, LMG 11483 and LMG 11482^T. Each of the two groups had almost identical rpoA sequences. The rpoA sequence similarity between strain LMG 10779^T and L. pseudomesenteroides LMG 11482^T was 95.6 %. Strains LMG 11483 and 17-2 had 98.1 and 97.2 % ANI values, 83.5 and 73.2 % dDDH values, and a 97.0 % AAI value with L. pseudomesenteroides LMG 11482^T, greater than the threshold for species demarcation, indicating that strains LMG 11483 and 17-2 belong to L. pseudomesenteroides. Strains LMG 18969 and C shared 97.1 and 98.2 % ANI values, 73.4 and 83.2 % dDDH values, and 96.9 and 96.6 % AAI values with strain LMG 10779^T, greater than the threshold for species demarcation, indicating that strains LMG 10779^T, LMG 18969 and C represent the same species. The ANI, dDDH and AAI values between strain LMG 10779^T and the type strains of phylogenetically related species were 75.2-92.5, 20.0-48.2 and 75.3-93.9 %, respectively, below the thresholds for species demarcation, indicating that strain LMG 10779^T represents a novel species within the genus Leuconostoc. On the basis of the results presented here, (i) strains 17-2 and LMG 11483 belong to L. pseudomesenteroides, and (ii) strains LMG 10779^T, LMG 18969 and C are considered to represent a novel species within the genus Leuconostoc, for which the name Leuconostoc falkenbergense sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain LMG 10779^T (=CCUG 27119^T).

Proposal of Lactobacillus kosoi Chiou et al. 2018 as a later heterotypic synonym of Lactobacillus micheneri McFrederick et al. 2018, elevation of Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. argentoratensis to the species level as Lactobacillus argentoratensis sp. nov., and Lactobacillus zhaodongensis sp. nov., isolated from traditional Chinese pickle and the intestinal tract of a honey bee (Apis mellifera)

Lactobacillus kosoi Chiou et al. 2018 and Lactobacillus micheneri McFrederick et al. 2018 are closely related, and they share 100 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, 99.6 % pheS gene sequence similarity, 100 % rpoA gene sequence similarity, 97.3 % average nucleotide identity (ANI) value and 76.6 % in silico DNA-DNA hybridization (isDDH) value, indicating that they represent the same species. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) analysis and phenotypic characterization also indicated that L. kosoi and L. micheneri are very similar. We propose L. kosoi Chiou et al. 2018 as a later heterotypic synonym of L. micheneri McFrederick et al. 2018. The taxonomic position of Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. argentoratensis in the L. plantarum group was re-examined using a polyphasic approach, including sequence analyses of 16S rRNA, pheS, rpoA and recA genes, average nucleotide identity analysis, in silico DNA-DNA hybridization, fatty acid methyl ester analysis and phenotypic characterization. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that L. plantarum subsp. argentoratensis was closely related to L. plantarum subsp. plantarum, L. pentosus and L. paraplantarum in the L. plantarum group, sharing 99.6-99.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities. Results of pheS, rpoA and recA gene sequence analyses indicated that L. plantarum subsp. argentoratensis was most closely related to L. plantarum subsp. plantarum, having 91.8 % pheS gene sequence similarity, 98.9 % rpoA gene sequence similarity and 93.1 % recA gene sequence similarity. L. plantarum subsp. argentoratensis DSM 16365^T shared 95.6 % ANI value and 62.9 % isDDH value with L. plantarum subsp. plantarum ATCC 14917^T. The low isDDH value confirmed that L. plantarum subsp. argentoratensis and L. plantarum subsp. plantarum represent two different species, rather than two different subspecies in the L. plantarum group. On the basis of the data from polyphasic characterization obtained in the present study and in previous studies, L. plantarum subsp. argentoratensis is elevated to the species level and represents a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus argentoratensis sp. nov. is proposed and the type strain is DKO 22^T (=CIP 108320^T=DSM 16365^T=JCM 16169^T). Two novel Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains, designated 1206-1^T and F027-1-2, were isolated from traditional pickle in Heilongjiang Province, PR China, and from the intestinal tract of a honey bee (Apis mellifera) in Hubei Province, PR China, respectively. The two bacteria were characterized by a polyphasic approach, including 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, pheS gene sequence analysis, rpoA gene sequence analysis, fatty acid methyl ester analysis, average nucleotide identity analysis, in silico DNA-DNA hybridization analysis and an analysis of phenotypic features. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strains 1206-1^T and F027-1-2 were distantly related to Lactobacillus sharpeae, Lactobacillus hulanensis, Lactobacillus songhuajiangensis, Lactobacillus pantheris, Lactobacillus thailandensis, Lactobacillus camelliae, Lactobacillus jixianensis, Lactobacillus nasuensis, Lactobacillus baoqingensis, Lactobacillus manihotivorans and Lactobacillus porcinae. Strain 1206-1^T exhibited 94.2-96.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 69.5-83.3 % pheS gene sequence similarities and 73.1-90.3 % rpoA gene sequence similarities to type strains of phylogenetically related species. ANI and isDDH values between strain 1206-1^T and the type strains of phylogenetically related species were 52.7-73.7 % and 21.1-30.1 %, respectively. On the basis of the data obtained in the present study, a novel species, Lactobacillus zhaodongensis sp. nov. is proposed and the type strain is 1206-1^T (=CCM 8981^T=CCTCC AB 2019200^T=LMG 31620^T).

Genotypic and phenotypic characterization of food-associated Lactobacillus plantarum isolates for potential probiotic activities

Lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus plantarum, has been applied, for centuries, for food and drink fermentations. Given the benefits associated with fermented products, Lb. plantarum strains have captured considerable industrial and scientific interest, so that they are included as fundamental components of functional foods. Indeed, some strains are marketed as probiotics. In the present study, food- and gut-associated Lb. plantarum isolates were genetically characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and phenotypically characterized for properties that could influence their probiotic potential. MLST and phylogenetic analysis stratified 22 Lb. plantarum isolates into six lineages. The isolates were further phenotypically characterized by an in vitro assay to assess their potential gut community influence via a limited number of assays including acidification activity, strain displacement activity and their intrinsic range of antibiotic resistance. Given growing recognition of the benefits of fermented foods, and the prevalence of Lb. plantarum in these applications, this study highlights analysis of a subset of preliminary important strain-specific features. These features are of interest to all stakeholders, to inform isolate comparison and selection for current functional food associations, and that can serve as a basis for future strain and food-microbe fermentation product development.

Lactobacillus garii sp. nov., isolated from a fermented cassava product

A novel Gram-positive, catalase negative, rod-shaped strain, FI11369T, was isolated from gari, a traditional West African fermented food derived from cassava. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, the closest type strains were Lactobacillus xiangfangensis LMG 26013T (99.4 % similarity), Lactobacillus plajomi NBRC 107333T (99.1 %), Lactobacillus paraplantarum DSM 10667T (99.1 %), Lactobacillus pentosus DSM 20314T (99.0 %), Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. plantarum ATCC 14917T (99.0 %), Lactobacillus modestisalitolerans NBRC 107235T (98.9 %), Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. argentoratensis DSM 16365T (98.9 %) and Lactobacillus daowaiensis NCIMB 15183T (98.8 %). The genome of strain FI11369T was sequenced and the average nucleotide identity (ANI) was compared with its closest relatives. ANI analysis showed that the closest relative, L. xiangfangensis DSM 27103T, had only a 82.4 % similarity. The main fatty acids of FI11369T were saturated C16 : 0 (18.2 %), unsaturated C18 : 1  ω9c (43.8 %) and cyclopropane C19 : 0 cyclo (ω10c and/or ω6; 22.5 %). Based on the genotypic and phenotypic data obtained in this study, a novel Lactobacillus species, Lactobacillus garii sp. nov., with the type strain FI11369T (=NCIMB 15148=DSM 108249), is proposed.

A taxonomic note on the genus Lactobacillus: Description of 23 novel genera, emended description of the genus Lactobacillus Beijerinck 1901, and union of Lactobacillaceae and Leuconostocaceae

The genus Lactobacillus comprises 261 species (at March 2020) that are extremely diverse at phenotypic, ecological and genotypic levels. This study evaluated the taxonomy of Lactobacillaceae and Leuconostocaceae on the basis of whole genome sequences. Parameters that were evaluated included core genome phylogeny, (conserved) pairwise average amino acid identity, clade-specific signature genes, physiological criteria and the ecology of the organisms. Based on this polyphasic approach, we propose reclassification of the genus Lactobacillus into 25 genera including the emended genus Lactobacillus, which includes host-adapted organisms that have been referred to as the Lactobacillus delbrueckii group, Paralactobacillus and 23 novel genera for which the names Holzapfelia, Amylolactobacillus, Bombilactobacillus, Companilactobacillus, Lapidilactobacillus, Agrilactobacillus, Schleiferilactobacillus, Loigolactobacilus, Lacticaseibacillus, Latilactobacillus, Dellaglioa, Liquorilactobacillus, Ligilactobacillus, Lactiplantibacillus, Furfurilactobacillus, Paucilactobacillus, Limosilactobacillus, Fructilactobacillus, Acetilactobacillus, Apilactobacillus, Levilactobacillus, Secundilactobacillus and Lentilactobacillus are proposed. We also propose to emend the description of the family Lactobacillaceae to include all genera that were previously included in families Lactobacillaceae and Leuconostocaceae. The generic term 'lactobacilli' will remain useful to designate all organisms that were classified as Lactobacillaceae until 2020. This reclassification reflects the phylogenetic position of the micro-organisms, and groups lactobacilli into robust clades with shared ecological and metabolic properties, as exemplified for the emended genus Lactobacillus encompassing species adapted to vertebrates (such as Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus iners, Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus jensensii, Lactobacillus johnsonii and Lactobacillus acidophilus) or invertebrates (such as Lactobacillus apis and Lactobacillus bombicola).

Lactobacillus hegangensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus suibinensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus daqingensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus yichunensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus mulanensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus achengensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus wuchangensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus gannanensis sp. nov., Lactobacillus binensis sp. nov. and Lactobacillus angrenensis sp. nov., isolated from Chinese traditional pickle and yogurt

Fourteen Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains were isolated from Chinese traditional pickle and yogurt. The strains were characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach, including 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, pheS gene sequence analysis, rpoA gene sequence analysis, fatty acid methyl ester analysis, determination of DNA G+C content, determination of average nucleotide identity (ANI), in silico DNA–DNA hybridization (isDDH) and an analysis of phenotypic features. The data demonstrated that the 14 strains represented ten novel species belonging to the genus Lactobacillus , strains 73-4T, 247-3T, 143-4(a)T, 33-1T, 143-6T, 247-4T, 17-4T, 143-1T, 735-2T and M1530-1T were designated as the type strains. Strains 73-4T and 247-3T were phylogenetically related to the type strains of Lactobacillus camelliae and Lactobacillus jixianensis , having 97.0–98.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 83.9–87.2 % pheS gene sequence similarities and 86.8–93.3 % rpoA gene sequence similarities. Strains 143-4(a)T and 33-1T were phylogenetically related to the type strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus , Lactobacillus paracasei and Lactobacillus casei , having 93.6–96.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 73.9–77.2 % pheS gene sequence similarities and 76.1–77.6 % rpoA gene sequence similarities. Strains 143-6T, 247-4T, 17-4T and 143-1T were phylogenetically related to the type strains of Lactobacillus concavus , Lactobacillus dextrinicus and Lactobacillus bayanensis , exhibiting 95.5–99.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 76.5–83.1 % pheS gene sequence similarities and 83.6–98.3 % rpoA gene sequence similarities. Strain 735-2T was phylogenetically related to the type strains of Lactobacillus zhaoyuanensis , Lactobacillus jiayinensis and Lactobacillus coryniformis , having 98.2–99.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 82.8–84.1 % pheS gene sequence similarities and 93.0–93.9 % rpoA gene sequence similarities. Strain M1530-1T was phylogenetically related to the type strains of Lactobacillus suantsaiihabitans and Lactobacillus brevis , having 99.5 and 99.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 90.3 and 81.7 % pheS gene sequence similarities and 97.7 and 91.1 % rpoA gene sequence similarities. The ANI and isDDH values between strains 73-4T, 247-3T, 143-4(a)T, 33-1T, 143-6T, 247-4T, 17-4T, 143-1T, 735-2T, M1530-1T and type strains of phylogenetically related species were less than 86.8 % and 33.9 % respectively, confirming that they represent ten novel species within the genus Lactobacillus . Weissella sagaensis sp. nov., isolated from traditional Chinese yogurt

Three Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains, designated X0750^T, X0278 and X0401, isolated from traditional yogurt in Tibet Autonomous Region, PR China, were characterized by a polyphasic approach, including sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA gene and three housekeeping genes (pheS, rpoA and recA), determination of average nucleotide identity (ANI) and average amino acid identity (AAI), in silico DNA-DNA hybridization (isDDH), fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis and phenotypic characterization. Strain X0750^T was phylogenetically related to the type strains of Weissella hellenica, Weissella bombi, Weissella paramesenteroides, Weissella jogaejeotgali, Weissella thailandensis, Weissella oryzae, Weissella cibaria and Weissella confusa, having 94.4-100 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, 76.7-90.0 % pheS gene sequence similarities, 88.9-99.4 % rpoA gene sequence similarities and 77.6-92.8 % recA gene sequence similarities, respectively. ANI, isDDH and AAI values between strain X0750^T and type strains of phylogenetically related species were less than 90.4, 40.9 and 92.8 % respectively, confirming that strain X0750^T represents a novel species within the genus Weissella. Based upon the data obtained in the present study, a novel species, Weissella sagaensis sp. nov., is proposed and the type strain is X0750^T(=NCIMB 15192^T=CCM 8924^T=LMG 31184^T=CCTCC AB 2018403^T).

Comparative genome analysis of Lactobacillus mudanjiangensis, an understudied member of the Lactobacillus plantarum group

The genus Lactobacillus is known to be extremely diverse and consists of different phylogenetic groups that show a diversity that is roughly equal to the expected diversity of a typical bacterial genus. One of the most prominent phylogenetic groups within this genus is the Lactobacillus plantarum group, which contains the understudied Lactobacillus mudanjiangensis species. Before this study, only one L. mudanjiangensis strain, DSM 28402^T, had been described, but without whole-genome analysis. In this study, three strains classified as L. mudanjiangensis were isolated from three different carrot juice fermentations and their whole-genome sequence was determined, together with the genome sequence of the type strain. The genomes of all four strains were compared with publicly available L. plantarum group genome sequences. This analysis showed that L. mudanjiangensis harboured the second largest genome size and gene count of the whole L. plantarum group. In addition, all members of this species showed the presence of a gene coding for a cellulose-degrading enzyme. Finally, three of the four L. mudanjiangensis strains studied showed the presence of pili on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, which were linked to conjugative gene regions, coded on a plasmid in at least two of the strains studied.
