Abstract
Three yeast isolates, NBRC 115909T, NBRC 115910 and NBRC 116270, were isolated from Trifolium pratense (red clover) flowers collected from Kisarazu, Chiba, Japan. Analysis of the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions revealed that these isolates represent a single novel species within the genus Starmerella. Also, no ascospore formation was observed. The yeast isolates were closely related to Starmerella vitae UWOPS 00-107.2T and Starmerella bombi NRRL Y-17081T. They differed from S. vitae, the most closely related species with a validly published name, by ten nucleotide substitutions with two gaps in the D1/D2 domains and 20 nucleotide substitutions in the ITS region. Moreover, the three isolates exhibited distinct phenotypic characteristics from the closely related species. Therefore, we suggest that these three isolates represent a novel species, designated as Starmerella kisarazuensis f.a., sp. nov. The holotype is NBRC 115909T (isotype: CBS 18485T).

Abstract
Honey bees are among the most effective pollinators that promote plant reproduction. Bees are highly active in the pollen collection season, which can lead to the transmission of selected pathogens between colonies. The clade Starmerella comprises yeasts that are isolated mainly from bees and their environment. When visiting plants, bees can come into contact with Starmerella spp. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and phylogenetic position of S. apis in bee colonies. Bee colonies were collected from nine apiaries in three regions. Ten colonies were sampled randomly from each apiary, and pooled samples were collected from the central part of the hive in each colony. A total of 90 (100%) bee colonies from nine apiaries were examined. Starmerella apis was detected in 31 (34.44%) samples, but related species were not identified. The 18S rRNA amplicon sequences of S. apis were compatible with the GenBank sequences of Starmerella spp. from India, Japan, Syria, Thailand, and the USA. The amplicon sequences of S. apis were also 99.06% homologous with the sequences deposited in GenBank under accession numbers JX515988 and NG067631.This is the first study to perform a phylogenetic analysis of S. apis in Polish honey bees.

Abstract
AbstractYeasts, usually defined as unicellular fungi, occur in various fungal lineages. Hence, they are not a taxonomic unit, but rather represent a fungal lifestyle shared by several unrelated lineages. Although the discovery of new yeast species occurs at an increasing speed, at the current rate it will likely take hundreds of years, if ever, before they will all be documented. Many parts of the earth, including many threatened habitats, remain unsampled for yeasts and many others are only superficially studied. Cold habitats, such as glaciers, are home to a specific community of cold-adapted yeasts, and, hence, there is some urgency to study such environments at locations where they might disappear soon due to anthropogenic climate change. The same is true for yeast communities in various natural forests that are impacted by deforestation and forest conversion. Many countries of the so-called Global South have not been sampled for yeasts, despite their economic promise. However, extensive research activity in Asia, especially China, has yielded many taxonomic novelties. Comparative genomics studies have demonstrated the presence of yeast species with a hybrid origin, many of them isolated from clinical or industrial environments. DNA-metabarcoding studies have demonstrated the prevalence, and in some cases dominance, of yeast species in soils and marine waters worldwide, including some surprising distributions, such as the unexpected and likely common presence of Malassezia yeasts in marine habitats.

Influence of single nitrogen compounds on growth and fermentation performance of Starmerella bacillaris and Saccharomyces cerevisiae during alcoholic fermentation. Abstract
Nitrogen is among the essential nutriments that govern interactions between yeast species in the wine environment. A thorough knowledge of how these yeasts assimilate the nitrogen compounds of grape juice is an important prerequisite for a successful co- or sequential fermentation. In the present study, we investigated the efficiency of 18 nitrogen sources for sustaining the growth and fermentation of two Starm. bacillaris strains displaying metabolic properties, compared to the reference yeast S. cerevisiae The analysis of growth and fermentation parameters provided a comprehensive picture of Starm. bacillaris preferences with respect to nitrogen sources for sustained growth and fermentation. Important differences were observed in S. cerevisiae regarding rates, final population and CO2 production. In particular, Lys and His supported substantial Starm. bacillaris growth and fermentation contrary to S. cerevisiae, while only 3 nitrogen sources, Arg, NH4+ and Ser, promoted S. cerevisiae growth more efficiently than that of Starm. bacillaris strains. Furthermore, Starm. bacillaris strains displayed a higher fermentative activity than S. cerevisiae during the first phase of culture with Gly or Thr, when the former species consumed solely fructose. Finally, no correlation has been shown between the ability of nitrogen sources to support growth and their fermentation efficiency. The specificities of Starm. bacillaris regarding nitrogen sources preferences are related to its genetic background, but further investigations are needed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved. These data are essential elements to be taken into account in order to make the best use of the potential of the two species.IMPORTANCE Mixed fermentations combining non-Saccharomyces and S. cerevisiae strains are increasingly implemented in the wine sector as they offer promising opportunities to diversify the flavour profile of end-products. However, competition for nutrients between species can cause fermentation problems, which is a severe hindrance to the development of these approaches. With the knowledge provided in this study on the nitrogen preferences of Starm. bacillaris, winemakers will be able to set up a nitrogen nutrition scheme adapted to the requirement of each species during mixed fermentation, through must supplementation with relevant nitrogen compounds. This will prevent nitrogen depletion or competition between yeasts for nitrogen sources, and consequently potential issues during fermentation. The data of this study highlight the importance of an appropriate nitrogen resource management during co- or sequential fermentation for fully exploiting the phenotypic potential of non-Saccharomyces yeasts.

Abstract
The extent of the diversity of yeasts in tropical rain forest and different environments from French Guiana was investigated. A total of 365 samples were collected from various substrates, such as plants, fruits and insects, at 13 locations, yielding 276 pure yeast isolates. Sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene indicated that 210 isolates out of 276 belonged to 82 described species (67 Saccharomycotina, 14 Basidiomycota and 1 Pezizomycotina). In addition to these, a total of 54 Saccharomycotina isolates could not be assigned to a known species. These belonged to 14 genera and should be studied further from a taxonomic point of view. In addition, among the 43 Basidiomycotina isolates found, 12 could not be assigned to a known species. This report shows an unexpected biodiversity and indicates that oversea territories, such as French Guiana, constitute a largely unexplored reservoir for yeast diversity. Two Saccharomycotina strains, CLIB 1706 and CLIB 1725, isolated from an insect and from a fern respectively, were characterized further and were shown to belong to the Suhomyces clade on the basis of the rDNA sequence comparison. CLIB 1706TrDNA sequences showed nine substitutions and three indels out of 556 bp (D1/D2 domains) and 32 substitutions and 12 indels out of 380 bp [internal transcribed spacer (ITS)] with that of the most closely related species Suhomyces guaymorum CBS 9823T. CLIB 1725T rDNA sequences presented 18 substitutions and one indel out of 549 bp (D1/D2 domains) and 48 substitutions and 11 indels out of 398 bp (ITS) with that of its closest relative Suhomyces vadensis CBS 9454T. Two novel species of the genus Suhomyces were described to accommodate these two strains: Suhomyces coccinellae f.a. sp. nov. (CLIB 1706T=CBS 14298T) and Suhomyces faveliae f.a. sp. nov. (CLIB 1725T=CBS 14299T).
