Vacuum effects on interference in two-photon down conversion

Randomly aperiodically poled LiNbO3 crystal design by Monte Carlo-Metropolis with simulated annealing optimization for ultrabroadband photon pair generation

We report a scheme for generating ultrabroadband two-photon states by spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) using randomly aperiodically poled crystals designed with an optimization algorithm based on the Monte Carlo-Metropolis method with simulated annealing. A particular SPDC source is discussed, showing results of the spectral and temporal properties of the emitted two-photon states, obtaining almost transform-limited SPDC biphoton wave packets. We also analyze the effect of fabrication errors on the SPDC.

Multiparticle Interference of Pairwise Distinguishable Photons

One of the central principles of quantum mechanics is that if there are multiple paths that lead to the same event and there is no way to distinguish between them, interference occurs. It is often assumed that distinguishing information in the preparation, evolution, or measurement of a system is sufficient to destroy interference. However, it is still possible for photons in distinguishable, separable states to interfere due to the indistinguishability of paths corresponding to possible exchange processes. Here we experimentally measure an interference signal that depends only on the multiparticle interference of four photons in a four-port interferometer despite pairs of them occupying distinguishable states.

Entanglement, Complementarity, and Vacuum Fields in Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

Using two crystals for spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a parallel setup, we observe two-photon interference with high visibility. The high visibility is consistent with complementarity and the absence of which-path information. The observations are explained as the effects of entanglement or equivalently in terms of interfering probability amplitudes and also by the calculation of a second-order field correlation function in the Heisenberg picture. The latter approach brings out explicitly the role of the vacuum fields in the down-conversion at the crystals and in the photon coincidence counting. For comparison, we show that the Hong–Ou–Mandel dip can be explained by the same approach in which the role of the vacuum signal and idler fields, as opposed to entanglement involving vacuum states, is emphasized. We discuss the fundamental limitations of a theory in which these vacuum fields are treated as classical, stochastic fields.

Simultaneous sum-frequency and second-harmonic generation in a planar waveguide

In this paper, we analyze second-harmonic (SH) generation and sum-frequency (SF) generation in a planar waveguide configuration using 2D quasi-phase-matching (QPM) gratings and show possibility of simultaneous generation of sum frequency and second harmonic. It is shown that it is possible for the two generated frequencies to be noncollinear with respect to the incident pump waves with the SF and SH frequencies exiting at different angles along the planar waveguide, leading to ease of collection. Numerical simulations are performed in a potassium titanyl phosphate planar waveguide, and it is shown that the proposed planar waveguide configuration provides wavelength tunability and has greater conversion efficiencies than bulk configuration and larger bandwidth than channel waveguide configuration.

Spatial symmetry and conservation of orbital angular momentum in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Directly contradictory arguments coexist regarding the conservation rule of orbital angular momentum in spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We analytically show how this rule is decided by spatial symmetry. We discover that the down-converted photon pairs can carry non-negligible extrinsic orbital angular momentum in the degrees of relative-movement freedom due to spatial symmetry breaking, leading to nonconservation of total orbital angular momentum in type-II down-conversion. Also, we demonstrate that the traditional technique does not measure the extrinsic orbital angular momentum.

Observation of ultrabroadband, beamlike parametric downconversion

We report spontaneous parametric downconversion having an unusually wide spectral bandwidth. A collinear type 1 phase-matching configuration is employed with degeneracy near the zero group-velocity dispersion frequency. With a spectral width of 1080 nm and degenerate wavelength of 1885 nm, the source also emits a high flux of 3.4 x 10(11) s(-1)W(-1) photon pairs constrained to a cone of only approximately 2 degrees half-angle. A rigorous theoretical approach is developed that confirms the experimental observations. The source properties are consistent with an ultrashort photon-pair correlation time and, for a narrowband pump, extremely high-dimensional spectral entanglement.

Quantum state preparation and conditional coherence

It is well known that spontaneous parametric down-conversion can be used to probabilistically prepare single-photon states. We have performed an experiment in which arbitrary superpositions of zero- and one-photon states can be prepared by appropriate postselection. The optical phase, which is meaningful only for superpositions of photon number, is related to the relative phase between the zero- and one-photon states. Whereas the light from spontaneous parametric down-conversion has an undefined phase, we show that this technique collapses one beam to a state of well-defined optical phase when a measurement succeeds on the other beam.

Orbital and intrinsic angular momentum of single photons and entangled pairs of photons generated by parametric down-conversion

States of light that are simultaneously eigenstates of orbital, intrinsic, and total angular momentum are found and eigenstates describing pairs of photons from spontaneous parametric down-conversion reveal classes of photon conversion with angular momentum conservation and cases where the initial angular momentum from the pump laser beam is shared between the converted photons and the generating medium. These angular momentum conservation laws open up a wide range of applications to be explored.

Improvements in the observed intensity correlation of optical parametric oscillator twin beams

We report an observed quantum noise reduction of 86% (8.5 dB) near 3 MHz in the intensity difference between the twin beams generated by a nondegenerate type II optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold.
