Abstract
In a linac driven Free Electron Laser (FEL), the shot-to-shot and non-invasive monitoring of the electron bunch length is normally ensured by Bunch Compressor Monitors (BCMs). The bunch-length dependent signal of a BCM results from the detection and integration-over a given frequency band-of the temporal coherent enhancement of the radiation spectral energy emitted by the electron beam while experiencing a longitudinal compression. In this work, we present a method that permits to express the relative variation of the bunch length as a function of the relative statistical fluctuations of the BCM and charge signals. Furthermore, in the case of a BCM equipped with two detectors simultaneously operating in two distinct wavelength bands, the method permits an absolute determination of the electron bunch length. The proposed method is beneficial to a FEL. Thanks to it, the machine compression feedback can be tuned against the absolute measurement of the bunch length rather than a bunch-length dependent signal. In a CW-superconducting-linac driven FEL, it can offer the precious opportunity to implement a fully non-invasive and absolute diagnostics of the bunch length.

Abstract
A coupling device, which can extract coherent edge radiation (CER) from an optical cavity for a free-electron laser (FEL) without damaging the FEL due to diffraction loss, was developed at Nihon University. We successfully observed the CER beam with a power of 1 mW or more in the terahertz range during FEL oscillation. It is revealed that the CER power changed with the detuning of the optical cavity and the dependence of the CER power on the detuning length differs from that of the FEL power. The measured CER spectra indicate that the longitudinal electron distribution in a bunch is modulated by the FEL oscillation with a period corresponding to the FEL slippage length. We herein report the characteristics of the CER with FEL oscillation in detail. These results demonstrate that the CER is excellent tool to reveal the overall effect of FEL interaction on electron distribution in a bunch.

Abstract
Far-infrared ray (FIR) is an electromagnetic wave that produces various health benefits against pathophysiological conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, renocardiovascular disorders, stress, and depression etc. However, the therapeutic ap-plication on the FIR-mediated protective potentials remains to be further extended. To achieve better understanding on FIR-mediated therapeutic potentials, we summarized additional findings in the present study that exposure to FIR ameliorates stressful condition, memory impairments, drug dependence, and mitochondrial dysfunction in the central nervous system. In this review, we underlined that FIR requires modulations of janus kinase 2 / signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3), nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2), muscarinic M1 acetylcholine receptor (M1 mAChR), dopamine D1 receptor, protein kinase C δ gene, and glutathione peroxidase-1 gene for exerting the protective potentials in response to neuropsychotoxic conditions

Abstract
Measurements of coherent diffraction radiation from a slit of variable width generated by short electron bunches were performed in millimeter and submillimeter ranges. Experimental data are compared with the transition radiation case and theoretical predictions. A more realistic description than the conventional theory is necessary to account for the data correctly. No noticeable difference in the estimated bunch length was observed using diffraction radiation in a wide range of slit widths and transition radiation.

Abstract
We report on measurements of (11-18)-cm wavelength radio emission from interactions of 15.2 MeV pulsed electron bunches at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. The electrons were observed both in a configuration where they produced primarily transition radiation from an aluminum foil, and in a configuration designed for the electrons to produce Cherenkov radiation in a silica sand target. Our aim was to emulate the large electron excess expected to develop during an electromagnetic cascade initiated by an ultrahigh-energy particle. Such charge asymmetries are predicted to produce strong coherent radio pulses, which are the basis for several experiments to detect high-energy neutrinos from the showers they induce in Antarctic ice and in the lunar regolith. We detected coherent emission which we attribute both to transition and possibly Cherenkov radiation at different levels depending on the experimental conditions. We discuss implications for experiments relying on radio emission for detection of electromagnetic cascades produced by ultrahigh-energy neutrinos.

Abstract
Short bunches of 150-MeV electrons of a linear accelerator passed along the surface of a crystal quartz or a teflon and coherent Cerenkov radiation from the solid dielectrics has been observed in the wavelength range from 0.5 to 4 mm. Properties of the radiation have been experimentally investigated. The angular distribution of the observed radiation showed a maximum peak in the direction of the Cerenkov angle with several satellite peaks. The intensity increased linearly with increasing the length of the medium and was proportional to the square of the number of electrons in the bunch. The spectral intensity was enhanced by almost five orders of magnitude in comparison with the theoretical calculation of incoherent radiation.
