Abstract
Covalent functionalization is one of the most efficient ways to tune the properties of layered materials in a highly controlled manner. However, molecular chemisorption on semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides remains a delicate task due to the inertness of their surface. Here we perform covalent modification of bulk and single layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) using chemical activation of diazonium salts. A high level of control over the grafting density and yield on MoS2 basal plane can be achieved by this approach. Using scanning probe microscopies and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we prove the covalent functionalization of MoS2.

Abstract
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play central roles in the regulation of tumor growth. TAMs can be differentiated into M1 and M2 types, which are responsible for the inhibition and growth of tumor tissues, respectively. Recognition of M2-TAMs is significant for the diagnosis and therapy of cancer, which is however severely limited due to the deficiency of selective and sensitive photoelectrochemical sensors. In this work, using Ce doped SnO2/SnS2 nano heterostructure as the highly sensitive platform, a photoelectrochemical sensor enabling the recognition of M2-TAMs was fabricated for the first time. By the decoration of CD163 antibody on the platform, the ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical sensor can selectively detect the CD163 protein on the surface of M2-TAMs. To our best knowledge, this is the first demonstration for recognition of M2-TAMs using photoelectrochemical method. The fabricated cytosensor has ultra-sensitive photocurrent response, applicable biological compatibility, high selectivity and relatively wide linear sensing range (5 × 101 to 1 × 105 cells/ml) with a low detection limit (50 cells/ml) for the detection of M2-TAMS. This kind of PEC cytosensor would provide a novel analysis and detection strategy for M2-TAMs.

Abstract
Site-selective dissociation induced by core photoexcitation of biomolecules is of key importance for the understanding of radiation damage processes and dynamics and for its promising use as "chemical scissors" in various applications. However, identifying products of site-selective dissociation in large molecules is challenging at the carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen edges because of the high recurrence of these atoms and related chemical groups. In this paper, we present the observation of site-selective dissociation at the sulfur L-edge in the gas-phase peptide methionine enkephalin, which contains only a single sulfur atom. Near-edge X-ray absorption mass spectrometry has revealed that the resonant S 2p → σ*C-S excitation of the sulfur contained in the methionine side chain leads to site-selective dissociation, which is not the case after core ionization above the sulfur L-edge. The prospects of such results for the study of charge dynamics in biomolecular systems are discussed.

Abstract
The valence electronic properties of S-ethyl flouromethanethioate (S-ethyl fluoromethsanethioate), FC(O)SCH2CH3, were investigated by means of He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with the analysis of the photofragmentation products determined by PEPICO (phtoelectron-photoion-coincidence) by using synchrotron radiation in the 11.1-21.6 eV photon energy range. The first band observed at 10.28 eV in the HeI photoelectron spectrum can be assigned with confidence to the ionization process from the HOMO [nπ(S) orbital], which is described as a lone pair formally localized on the sulfur atom, in agreement with quantum chemical calculations using the outer valence Green function method [OVGF/6-311++G (d,p)]. One of the most important fragmentation channels also observed in the valence region corresponds to the decarbonylation process yielding the [M-CO](·+) ion, which is clearly observed at m/z = 80. Moreover, S 2p and S 2s absorption edges have been examined by measuring the total ion yield spectra in the 160-240 eV region using variable synchrotron radiation. The dynamic of ionic fragmentation following the Auger electronic decay has been evaluated with the help of the PEPIPICO (photoion-photoion-photoelectron-coincidence spectra) technique.

Abstract
A strategy to calculate spin-orbit splitting for inner-shell transitions at an ab initio level is presented. The initial wave function is calculated for a spinless Hamiltonian at a multiconfigurational level, with just a few configurations, followed by multireference configuration interaction in order to establish a set of singlet and triplet states at 2p excitation edge. Then, the full Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian is formed and diagonalized on this state basis. The spin-orbit splitting is determined by a graphical procedure depending on the intensity of the transition from ground state. The specific states studied are those originating from 2p transitions in argon, HCl, H2S, and PH3.

Abstract
Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we studied the coadsorption of the amino acid L-cysteine and gold on a rutile TiO(2)(110) surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Irrespective of the deposition order, i.e., irrespective of whether L-cysteine or gold is deposited first, the primary interaction between L-cysteine and the gold clusters formed at the surface takes place through the deprotonated thiol group of the molecule. The deposition order, however, has a profound influence on the size of the gold clusters as well as their location on the surface. If L-cysteine is deposited first the clusters are smaller by a factor two to three compared to gold deposited onto the pristine TiO(2)(110) surface and then covered by L-cysteine. Further, in the former case the clusters cover the molecules and thus form the outermost layer of the sample. We also find that above a minimum gold cluster size the gold cluster/L-cysteine bond is stronger than the L-cysteine/surface bridging oxygen vacancy bond, which, in turn, is stronger than the gold cluster/vacancy bond.

Abstract
A study of valence electronic properties of S-ethyl chlorothioformate (S-ethyl chloromethanethioate), ClC(O)SCH(2)CH(3), using HeI photoelectron spectra (PES) and synchrotron radiation is presented. Moreover, the photon impact excitation and dissociation dynamics of ClC(O)SCH(2)CH(3) excited at the S 2p and Cl 2p levels are elucidated by analyzing the total ion yield (TIY) spectra and time-of-flight mass spectra acquired in multicoincidence mode [photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) and photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO)]. The HeI photoelectron spectrum is dominated by features associated with lone-pair electrons from the ClC(O)S- group, the HOMO at 9.84 eV being assigned to the n(π)(S) sulfur lone-pair orbital. Whereas the formation of C(2)H(5)(+) ion dominates the fragmentation in the valence energy region, the most abundant ion formed in both the S and Cl 2p energy ranges is C(2)H(3)(+). Comparison with related XC(O)SR (X = H, F, Cl and R = -CH(3), -C(2)H(5)) species reveals the impact of the alkyl chain on the photodissociation behavior of S-alkyl (halo)thioformates.

Abstract
Total ion yield spectra and photoinduced fragmentations following S 2p, Cl 2p, and O 1s inner shell excitations of methoxycarbonylsulfenyl chloride, CH(3)OC(O)SCl, have been studied in the gaseous phase by using synchrotron radiation and multicoincidence techniques, which include photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) and photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry. According to the analysis of the partial ion yield spectra the S+ ion signal shows a steep enhancement near the S 2p resonance, which could represent an evidence of state-specific fragmentations promoted by electronic excitations from the S 2p to vacant orbitals with strong antibonding character mainly located at the sulfur atom. The dissociation dynamics for selected PEPIPICO islands have been discussed. Fragmentation channels that involve the extrusion of H+ and CH(x)+ (x = 0, 1, 2, 3) fragments have been predominantly observed for dissociation of doubly charged CH(3)OC(O)SCl(2+).

Abstract
Site-specific fragmentations following S 2p and O 1s photoexcitation of thioacetic acid, CH3C(O)SH, have been studied by means of synchrotron radiation. Total ion yield (TIY) spectra were measured and multicoincidence techniques, which include photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) and photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO) time-of-flight mass spectrometry, were applied. The equivalent-core approximation was employed in order to estimate ionization transition values, and the observed peaks were tentatively assigned. A site-specific fragmentation is moderately observed by comparing the mass spectra collected at resonant energies around the inner and shallow inner shell S 2p and O 1s ionization edges. Beside H+ ion, the most abundant ions observed at the S 2p edge excitation were CH3CO+, SH+, S+, and CH3+. At the O 1s region the large CH3CO+ fragment was depressed, and small CHx+ (x = 0, 1, 2, 3), S+, and SH+ fragments were dominant. The dissociation dynamic for the main ion-pair production has been discussed. Two- and three-body dissociation channels have been observed in the PEPIPICO spectra, and the dissociation mechanisms were proposed.

Abstract
The fragmentation dynamics of core-excited H(2)S has been studied by means of partial anion and cation yield measurements around the S L(2,3)-subshell ionization thresholds. All detectable ionic fragments are reported, and significant differences between partial ion yields are observed. Possible dissociation pathways are discussed by comparison to previous studies of electron spectra.

Abstract
Total and partial ion yield spectra of chlorocarbonylsulfenyl chloride, ClC(O)SCl, are studied using tunable synchrotron radiation. Multicoincidence techniques, which include photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) and photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO) time-of-flight mass spectrometry, were applied to study the fragmentation dynamics around the S 2p, Cl 2p, C 1s, and O 1s ionization edges. The search for site-specific fragmentation effects showed a definite enhancement of the Cl+ signal at the Cl 2p resonance. However, fragmentation patterns of the PEPICO spectra at the various excitation energies are essentially identical. Evidence for the occurrence of the previously reported charge separation after an ion rearrangement dissociation mechanism was found. Highly charged species were observed in the multicoincidence spectra at K shell transitions, revealing the formation of a highly charged molecular ion.
