High-density production of spin-polarized atomic hydrogen and deuterium

Ultrahigh-Density Spin-Polarized H and D Observed via Magnetization Quantum Beats

We measure nuclear and electron spin-polarized H and D densities of at least 10^{19}  cm^{-3} with ∼10  ns lifetimes, from the photodissociation of HBr and DI with circularly polarized UV light pulses. This density is ∼6 orders of magnitude higher than that produced by conventional continuous-production methods and, surprisingly, at least 100 times higher than expected densities for this photodissociation method. We observe the hyperfine quantum beating of the H and D magnetization with a pickup coil, i.e., the respective 0.7 and 3 ns periodic transfer of polarization from the electrons to the nuclei and back. The 10^{19}  cm^{-3} spin-polarized H and D density is sufficient for laser-driven ion acceleration of spin-polarized electrons, protons, or deuterons, the preparation of nuclear-spin-polarized molecules, and the demonstration of spin-polarized D-T or D-^{3}He laser fusion, for which a reactivity enhancement of ∼50% is expected.

Hybrid optical pumping of optically dense alkali-metal vapor without quenching gas

Optical pumping of an optically thick atomic vapor typically requires a quenching buffer gas, such as N2, to prevent radiation trapping of unpolarized photons which would depolarize the atoms. We show that optical pumping of a trace contamination of Rb present in K metal results in a 4.5 times higher polarization of K than direct optical pumping of K in the absence of N2. Such spin-exchange polarization transfer from optically thin species is useful in a variety of areas, including spin-polarized nuclear scattering targets and electron beams, quantum-nondemolition spin measurements, and ultrasensitive magnetometry.

Evidence for a three-nucleon-force effect in proton-deuteron elastic scattering

Developments in spin-polarized internal targets for storage rings have permitted measurements of 197 MeV polarized protons scattering from vector polarized deuterons. This work presents measurements of the polarization observables A(y), iT11, and C(y,y) in proton-deuteron elastic scattering. When compared to calculations with and without three-nucleon forces, the measurements provide further evidence that three-nucleon forces make a contribution to the observables. This work indicates that three-body forces derived from static nuclear properties appear to be crucial to the description of dynamical properties.
