Pressure-dependent quenching of Rb 5P states in liquid helium

Infrared-active spin-orbit transitions of halogen atom dopants in solid parahydrogen: the role of trapping site geometry

We present theoretical calculations of the (2)P(1/2) ← (2)P(3/2) spin-orbit transition of Cl dopants embedded as substitutional impurities in solid parahydrogen (pH2) matrices. In the lower-energy (2)P(3/2) spin-orbit level, the Cl atom's electron density distribution is anisotropic, and slightly distorts the geometry of the atom's trapping site. This distortion leads to a blue shift in the spin-orbit transition energy; the blue shift is enhanced when we account for the large-amplitude zero point motions of the pH2 molecules surrounding the Cl dopant. We also show that the intensity of the transition depends on the geometry of the trapping site. In the gas phase, the (2)P(1/2) ← (2)P(3/2) atomic transition is electric dipole forbidden. However, when the Cl atom resides in trapping sites that mimic the hexagonal close packed morphology of pure solid pH2, the transition becomes electric dipole allowed through interaction-induced transition dipole moments. These transition dipole moments originate in the anisotropic electron density distribution of the lower-energy (2)P(3/2) spin-orbit level.

Spectroscopy of gold atoms isolated in liquid and solid 4He matrices

We present a systematic experimental study of absorption and fluorescence spectra of Au atoms in bulk liquid and solid helium matrices. The results are compared to the spectra of Cu atoms studied earlier. We investigate the dependence of the observed spectral lineshapes on the helium pressure. The observed splitting of the 5d(10)6p - 5d(9)6s(2) transitions of Au in hcp solid He gives evidence for an anisotropic trapping site structure formed either by a non-spherical atomic bubble or a four-vacancy center.

Rotational Dynamics of HCN−M (M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) van der Waals Complexes Formed on the Surface of Helium Nanodroplets

Infrared laser spectroscopy was used to probe the unique rotational dynamics of the HCN-M (M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) complexes formed on the surface of helium droplets. The nu1 CH stretch ro-vibrational spectra were measured revealing what appears to be the P and R contours of a nearly rigid linear rotor. To simulate the linear molecule spectra, given a rotational temperature of 0.37 K, effective moments of inertia, IB, were required to be 10(4)-10(5) amu.A2 larger than the ab initio predicted values. The large moments of inertia were found to be strongly dependent on both the mass of the complex and the size of the helium droplet, consistent with a model where the dopant is located in a dimple site on the surface of the droplet. In this model, the moment of inertia is representative of the rotational motion of the dopant on the surface about an inertial axis through the center of the droplet.

Optical detection of nonradiating alkali atoms in solid helium

We have detected by optical means nonfluorescing 85Rb and 87Rb atoms implanted in a body centered cubic 4He crystal. In contrast to cesium the resonance fluorescence of rubidium is strongly quenched by the helium matrix, and the weak resonance absorption of the two Rb isotopes was detected using a double resonance technique. From a comparative study of the (optically detected) magnetic resonance spectra of 85Rb, 87Rb, and 133Cs we infer their effective g(F) factors and conclude that they are not perturbed by the He matrix at a level of 2 x 10(-4). We show further that optical pumping of Rb proceeds via depopulation, whereas for Cs it proceeds via repopulation.

Slow spin relaxation of Rb atoms confined in glass cells filled with dense 4He gas at 1.85 K

At temperatures below 2.1 K, long-lived gaseous Rb atoms in glass cells have been generated with a simple method: irradiating the cells, containing 4He gas and Rb metal, with a cw laser. The obtained atomic Rb density ( approximately 10(8) cm(-3)) decreases with a 1/e time constant of about 10 s at 1.85 K. We have performed optical pumping of the Rb atoms and measured the longitudinal electronic spin relaxation time at 1.85 K as well. For processes (such as Rb-He collisions) which do not remove the atomic Rb from the vapor, this relaxation time is found to be about 60+/-15 s.

SPECTROSCOPY OF ATOMS AND MOLECULES IN LIQUID HELIUM

Laser ablation of in situ metals has recently made it possible to immerse a large number of different metal atoms and ions and small clusters of metal atoms in liquid helium (He) and thus study their absorption and emission spectra in the visible region. Atoms and molecules are readily picked up by large (N > or = 103 atoms) He droplets, and their spectra are sensitively detected through the use of either beam depletion following absorption or laser-induced fluorescence. Within the past three years, a wide variety of molecules, ranging from OCS to large organic molecules such as amino acids and a number of van der Waals complexes and even large metal clusters, have been embedded in He droplets and studied either in infrared or in the visible region. These results are discussed here in detail, and the evidence for the effect of superfluidity on the spectral features is reviewed.
