Superconducting gap and attractive interaction between electrons investigated by the current-density functional theory for superconductors

The quantitative description of the Meissner effect can be done by means of the current-density functional theory for superconductors (sc-CDFT), as pointed out by W Kohn. Here, we propose a calculation scheme of the sc-CDFT. In this scheme, the superconducting gap and attractive interaction between electrons are treated as variables, while experimental data are used for the penetration depth. The variables are determined by solving the gap equation of the sc-CDFT simultaneously with the relation between energy gains of the superconducting state in the zero and nonzero magnetic field cases. This scheme is applied to homogeneous electron gas systems immersed in a magnetic field that correspond to simple models for aluminum, tin and indium immersed in a magnetic field. The magnetic field and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap are well reproduced for each case. It is also found that the attractive interaction changes with the magnetic field and temperature, which is consistent with the change in the superconducting gap.

Uniform magnetic fields in density-functional theory

We construct a density-functional formalism adapted to uniform external magnetic fields that is intermediate between conventional density functional theory and Current-Density Functional Theory (CDFT). In the intermediate theory, which we term linear vector potential-DFT (LDFT), the basic variables are the density, the canonical momentum, and the paramagnetic contribution to the magnetic moment. Both a constrained-search formulation and a convex formulation in terms of Legendre-Fenchel transformations are constructed. Many theoretical issues in CDFT find simplified analogs in LDFT. We prove results concerning N-representability, Hohenberg-Kohn-like mappings, existence of minimizers in the constrained-search expression, and a restricted analog to gauge invariance. The issue of additivity of the energy over non-interacting subsystems, which is qualitatively different in LDFT and CDFT, is also discussed.

Comparison between the vorticity expansion approximation and the local density approximation of the current-density functional theory from the viewpoint of sum rules

We compare the vorticity expansion approximation (VEA) with the local density approximation (LDA) of the current-density functional theory from the viewpoint of sum rules. The VEA formulae satisfy all sum rules which are derived from uniform and nonuniform coordinate scaling properties, while the LDA formulae do not satisfy at least about a third of the sum rules. The validity of the VEA formula is thus confirmed successfully.

Spin-potential functional formalism for current-carrying noncollinear magnetic systems

We develop a formalism dual to spin-current-density functional theory (CDFT) where minimization with respect to the scalar and vector spin potentials is used. In this way we circumvent the issues surrounding the nonuniqueness of the mapping between spin potentials and ground-state wave functions, and the v representability issue of current-density functionals. The approach applied within the Kohn-Sham formalism provides the foundations for the optimized effective potential method for CDFT.

Exact density functionals for two-electron systems in an external magnetic field

In principle, the extension of density functional theory (DFT) to Coulombic systems in a nonvanishing magnetic field is via current DFT (CDFT). Though CDFT is long established formally, relatively little is known with respect to any generally applicable, reliable approximate E(XC) and A(XC) functionals analogous with the workhorse approximate functionals (local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation) of ordinary DFT. Progress can be aided by having benchmark studies on a solvable correlated system. At zero field, the best-known finite system for such purposes is Hooke's atom. Recently we extended the exact ground state solutions for this two-electron system to certain combinations of nonzero external magnetic fields and confinement strengths. From those exact solutions, as well as high-accuracy numerical results for other field and confinement combinations, we construct the correlated electron density and paramagnetic current density, the exact Kohn-Sham orbitals, and the exact DFT and CDFT exchange-correlation energies and potentials. We compare with results from several widely used approximate functionals, all of which exhibit major qualitative failures, whether in CDFT or in naive application of ordinary DFT. We also illustrate how the CDFT vorticity variable nu is a computationally difficult quantity which may not be appropriate in practice to describe the external B field effects on E(XC) and A(XC).

Nonempirical construction of current-density functionals from conventional density-functional approximations

Density-functional approximations for the exchange-correlation energy Exc[n] of a many-electron ground state are highly developed and widely useful. When a paramagnetic current jp(r) is present, Vignale and Rasolt have extended the Kohn-Sham theorems and presented an additive correction valid to second order in the gauge-invariant vorticity nu=Delta x (jp/n):Exc[n, jp]=Exc[n, jp=0] + DeltaE(VR)(xc)[n, nu]. Apart from spin-polarization effects, their correction is unambiguous for a generalized gradient approximation (GGA). But for a meta-GGA (MGGA), one needs to know how to go back from the orbital kinetic energy density tau([n, jp];r) to tau([n,0];r); we show how to do this here. Numerical tests on the degeneracies for open-shell atoms show that current-density corrections reduce the error of GGA from 2 to 1 kcal/mol, and of MGGA from 5 to 2 kcal/mol.
