Abstract
The HeH^{+} cation is the simplest molecular prototype of the indirect dissociative recombination (DR) process that proceeds through electron capture into Rydberg states of the corresponding neutral molecule. This Letter develops the first application of our recently developed energy-dependent frame transformation theory to the indirect DR processes. The theoretical model is based on the multichannel quantum-defect theory with the vibrational basis states computed using exterior complex scaling of the nuclear Hamiltonian. The ab initio electronic R-matrix theory is adopted to compute quantum defects as functions of the collision energy and of the internuclear distance. The resulting DR rates are convolved over the beam energy distributions relevant to a recent experiment at the Cryogenic Storage Ring, giving good agreement between the experiment and the theory.

Abstract
Recombination of N2H+ ions with electrons was studied using a stationary afterglow with a cavity ring-down spectrometer. We probed in situ the time evolutions of number densities of different rotational and vibrational states of recombining N2H+ ions and determined the thermal recombination rate coefficients for N2H+ in the temperature range of 80-350 K. The newly calculated vibrational transition moments of N2H+ are used to explain the different values of recombination rate coefficients obtained in some of the previous studies. No statistically significant dependence of the measured recombination rate coefficient on the buffer gas number density was observed.

Abstract
The epoch of first star formation in the early Universe was dominated by simple atomic and molecular species consisting mainly of two elements: hydrogen and helium. Gaining insight into this constitutive era requires a thorough understanding of molecular reactivity under primordial conditions. We used a cryogenic ion storage ring combined with a merged electron beam to measure state-specific rate coefficients of dissociative recombination, a process by which electrons destroy molecular ions. We found a pronounced decrease of the electron recombination rates for the lowest rotational states of the helium hydride ion (HeH+), compared with previous measurements at room temperature. The reduced destruction of cold HeH+ translates into an enhanced abundance of this primordial molecule at redshifts of first star and galaxy formation.

Abstract
Cross sections and thermal rate coefficients for rotational and vibration excitation of the four stable isotopologues of the 4 HeH + ion by electron impact are presented. The data are calculated using a previously developed theoretical approach. The obtained rate coefficients are fitted to analytical formulas with the 10–10,000 K interval of applicability. These present results could be useful in tokamak plasma and astrophysical modeling and can help in the detection of these species in the interstellar medium.

Abstract
The interaction of matter with its environment is the driving force behind the evolution of 99% of the observed matter in the universe. The majority of the visible universe exists in a state of weak ionization, the so called fourth state of matter: plasma. Plasmas are ubiquitous, from those occurring naturally; interstellar molecular clouds, cometary comae, circumstellar shells, to those which are anthropic in origin; flames, combustion engines and fusion reactors. The evolution of these plasmas is driven by the interaction of the plasma constituents, the ions, and the electrons. One of the most important subsets of these reactions is electron-molecular ion recombination. This process is significant for two very important reasons. It is an ionization reducing reaction, removing two ionised species and producing neutral products. Furthermore, these products may themselves be reactive radical species which can then further drive the evolution of the plasma. The rate at which the electron reacts with the ion depends on many parameters, for examples the collision energy, the internal energy of the ion, and the structure of the ion itself. Measuring these properties together with the manner in which the system breaks up is therefore critical if the evolution of the environment is to be understood at all. Several techniques have been developed to study just such reactions to obtain the necessary information on the parameters. In this paper the focus will be on one the most recently developed of these, the Ion Storage Ring, together with the detection tools and techniques used to extract the necessary information from the reaction.

Abstract
The dissociative recombination of OPCl+ and OPCl2+ has been studied at the storage ring CRYRING. The rate constants as a function of electron temperature have been derived to be 7.63 x 10(-7)(Te/300)(-0.89) and >1.2 x 10(-6)(Te/300)(-1.22) cm3s(-1), respectively. The lower limit quoted for the latter rate constant reflects the experimental inability to detect all of the reaction products. The branching fractions from the reaction have been measured for OPCl+ at approximately 0 eV interaction energy and are determined to be N(O+P+Cl)=(16+/-7)%, N(O+PCl)=(16+/-3)% and N(OP+Cl)=(68+/-5)%. These values have been obtained assuming that the rearrangement channel forming P+ClO is negligible, and ab initio calculations using GAUSSIAN03 are presented for the ion structures and energetics to support such an assumption. Finally, the limitations to using heavy ion storage rings such as CRYRING for studies into the dissociative recombination of large singly charged molecular ions are discussed.

Abstract
We report an investigation into the dissociative recombination of the azide radical cation, N(3) (+). The reaction rate constant has been measured to be 6.47 x 10(-7) cm(3) s(-1) at room temperature. This value is smaller than those reported earlier for the ion-electron neutralization of N(3) (+) at nitrogen atmospheric pressure. A strong propensity to dissociate through the N(2)+N channel has been observed.

Abstract
We have studied the dissociative recombination (DR) of molecular hydrogen ions with slow electrons over a range of collision energies from 0 to 400 meV. By employing a pulsed expansion source for rotational cooling and by exploiting super elastic collisions with near-0-eV electrons in a heavy ion storage ring for vibrational cooling, we observe a highly structured DR cross section, comparable to that reported for HD+. Using para-hydrogen-enriched ion beams, we identify for the first time features in the DR cross sections attributed to nu=0, J=even molecules (para-H2) and nu=0, J=odd (ortho-H2) molecules, separately. Indications are given that para levels have different DR rate coefficients from ortho levels for the first four vibrational levels at near-0-eV collisions.

Abstract
Molecular photofragmentation has been studied by event imaging on HeH+ ions at 32 nm (38.7 eV) in a fast ion beam crossed with the free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH), analyzing neutral He product directions and energies. Fragmentation into He(1snl,n > or = 2)+H+ was observed to yield significant photodissociation at 32 nm with an absolute cross section of (1.4+/-0.7) x 10(-18) cm2, releasing energies of 10-20 eV. A clear dominance of photodissociation perpendicular to the laser polarization was found in contrast to the excitation paths so far emphasized in theoretical studies.

Abstract
We report the first observation of almost exclusive three-body breakup in the dissociative recombination of a covalent triatomic molecular ion O3+. The three-body channel, constituting about 94% of the total reactivity, has been investigated in detail. The atomic fragments are formed in only the first two electronic states, 3P and 1D, while formation in the 1S state has not been observed. The breakup predominantly proceeds through dissociative states with linear geometry.

Abstract
Some of the most interesting objects in the solar system are those bodies that have significant atmospheres. The discovery that Titan, Saturn's largest satellite, has a substantial nitrogen-based atmosphere makes it a prime extraterrestrial object of interest. The advent of the Cassini orbiter spacecraft program that is able to observe and sample Titan's ionosphere adds greatly to this interest. We report here a summary of some of the efforts that have been made in the laboratory to understand the processes responsible for chemical processing of the primary ions formed in Titan's ionosphere, into the ions observed by in situ sampling. The presence of significant hydrocarbons and the colder temperatures of Titan's ionosphere lead to a much greater complexity in the ion chemistry of Titan than is apparent in the ion chemistry of Earth. A review of all the ion-molecule chemistry investigated in laboratory studies relevant to Titan is included as a table. The complexity of some of the hydrocarbon ion structures formed in just three reactive ion-molecule sequences from the primary ions has required a new experimental methodology which is discussed.

Abstract
Dissociative recombination of ammonia cluster ions with free electrons has been studied at the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING (Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm University). The absolute cross sections for dissociative recombination of H+(NH3)2, H+(NH3)3, D+(ND3)2, and D+(ND3)3 in the collision energy range of 0.001-27 eV are reported, and thermal rate coefficients for the temperature interval from 10 to 1000 K are calculated from the experimental data and compared with earlier results. The fragmentation patterns for the two ions H+(NH3)2 and D+(ND3)2 show no clear isotope effect. Dissociative recombination of X+(NX3)2 (X=H or D) is dominated by the product channels 2NX3+X [0.95+/-0.02 for H+(NH3)2 and 1.00+/-0.02 for D+(ND3)2]. Dissociative recombination of D+(ND3)3 is dominated by the channels yielding three N-containing fragments (0.95+/-0.05).

Abstract
This paper presents results concerning measurements of the dissociative recombination (DR) of dihydrogen sulfide ions. In combination with the ion storage ring CRYRING an imaging technique was used to investigate the breakup dynamics of the three-body channel in the DR of 32SD2(+). The two energetically available product channels S(3P) + 2D(2S) and S(1D) + 2D(2S) were both populated, with a branching fraction of the ground-state channel of 0.6(0.1). Information about the angle between the two deuterium atoms upon dissociation was obtained together with information about how the available kinetic energy was distributed between the two light fragments. The recombination cross sections as functions of energy in the interval of 1 meV to 0.3 eV in the center-of-mass frame are presented for 34SH2(+). The thermal rate coefficient for the DR of 34SH2(+) was determined to be (4.8+/-1.0) x 10(-7)(T/300)(-0.72+/-0.1) cm3 s(-1) over this interval.

Abstract
The dissociative recombination of Na(+)(D(2)O) ion has been studied at the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING (Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm University). The cross section has been measured as a function of center-of-mass energy ranging from 1 meV to 0.1 eV and found to have an E(-1.37) dependence. The rate coefficient has been deduced to be (2.3+/-0.32)x10(-7)(T(e)/300)(-0.95+/-0.01) cm(3) s(-1) for T(e)=50-1000 K. The branching ratios have been measured at 0 eV. Of the four energetically accessible dissociation channels, three channels are found to occur although the channel that breaks the weak Na(+)-D(2)O bond is by far dominant.

Abstract
We report the first observation of four-body breakup in electron dissociative recombination of a molecular ion: C2D+5. In an ion storage ring experiment, the branching ratio for the process C2D+5 + e(-)-->C2D2 + D + D + D was determined to be 13%. This means that three covalent chemical bonds are broken as a result of the action of a single electron. This is the first time a four-body breakup of chemical bonds has been observed in a low-energy binary reaction.

Abstract
The dependence of the dissociative recombination cross section upon the angle between the incoming electron beam and the ion internuclear axis is determined for diatomic molecules. Product angular distributions are derived for the component partial waves of the Coulomb wave function. In agreement with earlier results for dissociative attachment, it is shown that in the slow rotation approximation, if electron capture is dominated by a single partial wave, the product angular distribution is given by the square of the absolute value of the partial wave spherical harmonic describing the incoming electron.

Abstract
The development of heavy-ion storage-cooler rings for atomic physics has made it possible to produce high-quality beams of molecular ions that are internally cold. The stored molecular-ion beam is immersed in a cold electron bath, which gives a beam of low divergence and small cross-sectional area. The electron cooler also serves as a target for electron-molecular ion collision experiments. This allows the study of dissociative recombination of cold molecules with respect to cross sections, branching ratios, and angular distributions at an unprecedented luminosity.
