Orbital angular momentum of single photons: revealing quantum fundamentals

In 1992, Allen et al. (Allen L, Beijersbergen MW, Spreeuw RJC, Woerdman JP. 1992 Orbital angular momentum of light and the transformation of Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes. Phys. Rev. A 45, 8185-8189. (doi:10.1103/physreva.45.8185)) published their seminal paper on the orbital angular momentum of light, drawing together seemingly unrelated themes and ideas in optics. This breakthrough initiated a new area of optical science concerning the physics and applications of structured light beams. This orbital angular momentum is an important concept for both classical and quantum science, especially where the framing in terms of angular momentum demystifies some of the quantum properties of light. Loudon's own work (Loudon R. 2003 Theory of the forces exerted by Laguerre-Gaussian light beams on dielectrics. Phys. Rev. A 68, 013806. (doi:10.1103/PhysRevA.68.013806)) in this area focused on the interactions between light and matter where the orbital angular momentum extended his studies from linear impulses to rotational torques.This article is part of the theme issue 'The quantum theory of light'.

Identification of orbital angular momentum using atom-based spatial self-phase modulation

Optical vortex orbital angular momentum modes, namely the twists number of the light does in one wavelength, play a critical role in quantum-information coding, super-resolution imaging, and high-precision optical measurement. Here, we present the identification of the orbital angular momentum modes based on spatial self-phase modulation in rubidium atomic vapor. The refractive index of atomic medium is spatially modulated by the focused vortex laser beam, and the resulted nonlinear phase shift of beam directly related to the orbital angular momentum modes. The output diffraction pattern carries clearly distinguishable tails, whose number and rotation direction correspond to the magnitude and sign of the input beam orbital angular momentum, respectively. Furthermore, the visualization degree of orbital angular momentums identification is adjusted on-demand in the terms of incident power and frequency detuning. These results show that the spatial self-phase modulation of atomic vapor can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly readout the orbital angular momentum modes of vortex beam.

Spiraling light: from donut modes to a Magnus effect analogy

The insight that optical vortex beams carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), which emerged in Leiden about 30 years ago, has since led to an ever expanding range of applications and follow-up studies. This paper starts with a short personal account of how these concepts arose. This is followed by a description of some recent ideas where the coupling of transverse orbital and spin angular momentum (SAM) in tightly focused laser beams produces interesting new effects. The deflection of a focused light beam by an atom in the focus is reminiscent of the Magnus effect known from aerodynamics. Momentum conservation dictates an accompanying light force on the atom, transverse to the optical axis. As a consequence, an atom held in an optical tweezer will be trapped at a small distance of up to λ/2π away from the optical axis, which depends on the spin state of the atom and the magnetic field direction. This opens up new avenues to control the state of motion of atoms in optical tweezers as well as potential applications in quantum gates and interferometry.

Velocity-dependent optical forces and Maxwell's demon

An atom placed in a focused laser beam will experience a dipole force due to the gradient in the interaction energy, which is analogous to the well-known optical tweezers effect. This force will be dependent on the velocity of the atom due to the Doppler effect, which could potentially be used to implement a Maxwell’s demon. Photon scattering and other forms of dissipation can be negligibly small, which would seem to contradict quantum information proofs that a Maxwell’s demon must dissipate a minimum amount of energy. We show that the velocity dependence of the dipole force is cancelled out by another force that is related to the gradient in the phase of the laser beam. As a result, a Maxwell’s demon cannot be implemented in this way.

Non-conservative optical forces

Undoubtedly, laser tweezers are the most recognized application of optically induced mechanical action. Their operation is usually described in terms of conservative forces originating from intensity gradients. However, the fundamental optical action on matter is non-conservative. We will review different manifestations of non-conservative optical forces (NCF) and discuss their dependence on the specific spatial properties of optical fields that generate them. New developments relevant to the NCF such as tractor beams and transversal forces are also discussed.

High-power efficient multiple optical vortices in a single beam generated by a kinoform-type spiral phase plate

We propose using a solitary kinoform-type spiral phase plate structure to generate an array of vortices located in a single beam. Kinoform-type spiral surfaces allow each wavelength component of the phase modulation value to be wrapped back to its 2 pi equivalent for optical vortices of high charge. This allows the surface-relief profiles of high-charge vortices to be microfabricated with the same physical height as spiral phase plates of unity-charged optical vortices. The m-charged optical vortex obtained interacts with the inherent coherent background, which changes the propagation dynamics of the optical vortex and splits the initial m charge into /m/ unity-charged optical vortices within the same beam. Compared to a hologram, a multistart spiral phase plate is more efficient in the use of available spatial frequencies and beam energy and also is computationally less demanding. Furthermore, using microfabrication techniques will allow for greater achievable tolerances in terms of smaller feature sizes.
