Determination of valence of Cu in superconducting La2-x(Sr,Ba)xCuO

Activating dynamic atomic-configuration for single-site electrocatalyst in electrochemical CO2 reduction

One challenge for realizing high-efficiency electrocatalysts for CO2 electroreduction is lacking in comprehensive understanding of potential-driven chemical state and dynamic atomic-configuration evolutions. Herein, by using a complementary combination of in situ/operando methods and employing copper single-atom electrocatalyst as a model system, we provide evidence on how the complex interplay among dynamic atomic-configuration, chemical state change and surface coulombic charging determines the resulting product profiles. We further demonstrate an informative indicator of atomic surface charge (φe) for evaluating the CO2RR performance, and validate potential-driven dynamic low-coordinated Cu centers for performing significantly high selectivity and activity toward CO product over the well-known four N-coordinated counterparts. It indicates that the structural reconstruction only involved the dynamic breaking of Cu-N bond is partially reversible, whereas Cu-Cu bond formation is clearly irreversible. For all single-atom electrocatalysts (Cu, Fe and Co), the φe value for efficient CO production has been revealed closely correlated with the configuration transformation to generate dynamic low-coordinated configuration. A universal explication can be concluded that the dynamic low-coordinated configuration is the active form to efficiently catalyze CO2-to-CO conversion.

Valence properties of Cu and Ru in titanium-substituted LnCu3Ru4O12+δ (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) investigated by XANES and TGA

In La_yCu₃Ru_xTi_4−xO_12+δ ruthenium remains as Ru⁴⁺, while the Cu valence decreases from +2 to +1.6 with increasing x.

Co-substitution effects on the Fe valence in the BaFe2As2 superconducting compound: a study of hard x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The Fe K x-ray absorption near edge structure of BaFe(2-x)Co(x)As(2) superconductors was investigated. No appreciable alteration in shape or energy position of this edge was observed with Co substitution. This result provides experimental support to previous ab initio calculations in which the extra Co electron is concentrated at the substitute site and do not change the electronic occupation of the Fe ions. Superconductivity may emerge due to bonding modifications induced by the substitute atom that weakens the spin-density-wave ground state by reducing the Fe local moments and/or increasing the elastic energy penalty of the accompanying orthorhombic distortion.

Polarized X-Ray Absorption Studies of Oxide Superconductors

Polarized X-ray absorption studies have been carried out at the Cu K-edge to study the effect of Sr doping in La2CuO4 and oxygen doping in YBa2Cu3O6+x. These measurements help to elucidate the transitions giving rise to the absorption edges. We offer an explanation of the polarization shifts of features in terms of the results of our embedded cluster calculations of electronic structure.

Copper K-Edge X-ray Absorption Studies of La(2)(-)(x)()K(x)()CuO(4) Superconductors, Ba(4)NaCuO(4)(CO(3))(2), and NdCu(2)O(4)

X-ray near-edge absorption spectroscopy (XANES) measurements are reported at the Cu K-edge for La(2)(-)(x)()K(x)()CuO(4) superconductors with x = 0.1 and 0.2. Comparisons of the data were made with the absorption spectra of a Cu(II) standard (La(2)CuO(4)), a new Cu(III) standard (Ba(4)NaCuO(4)(CO(3))(2)), and a new mixed-valent Cu(II)/Cu(III) phase (NdCu(2)O(4)). There is a consistent increase in the energy of the main Cu absorption edge in the following series: La(2)CuO(4) < La(1.9)K(0.1)CuO(4) < La(1.8)K(0.2)CuO(4) approximately NdCu(2)O(4) < Ba(4)NaCuO(4)(CO(3))(2). This trend can be attributed to an increase in the average Cu valence and to a decrease in bond length and an increase in covalency. The magnitude of the energy shift from Cu(II) to Cu(III) for the main absorption edge is approximately 3 eV. There is no measurable change in the energy of the pre-edge feature irrespective of Cu valence. Furthermore, no new features appear at the edge for samples with formal oxidation state between 2 and 3, even for NdCu(2)O(4), which contains both Cu(II) and Cu(III) in crystallographically distinct sites.
