Lattice dynamics of La2NiO4

Infrared probe of pseudogap in electron-doped Sr2IrO4

We report on infrared spectroscopy experiments on the electronic response in (Sr_1-x La _x )₂IrO₄ (x = 0, 0.021, and 0.067). Our data show that electron doping induced by La substitution leads to an insulator-to-metal transition. The evolution of the electronic structure across the transition reveals the robustness of the strong electronic correlations against the electron doping. The conductivity data of the metallic compound show the signature of the pseudogap that bears close similarity to the analogous studies of the pseudogap in the underdoped cuprates. While the low energy conductivity of the metallic compound is barely frequency dependent, the formation of the pseudogap is revealed by the gradual suppression of the featureless conductivity below a threshold frequency of about 17 meV. The threshold structure develops below about 100 K which is in the vicinity of the onset of the short-range antiferromagnetic order. Our results demonstrate that the electronic correlations play a crucial role in the anomalous charge dynamics in the (Sr_1-x La _x )₂IrO₄ system.

Lattice dynamics to trigger low temperature oxygen mobility in solid oxide ion conductors

SrFeO(2.5) and SrCoO(2.5) are able to intercalate oxygen in a reversible topotactic redox reaction already at room temperature to form the cubic perovskites Sr(Fe,Co)O(3), while CaFeO(2.5) can only be oxidized under extreme conditions. To explain this significant difference in low temperature oxygen mobility, we investigated the homologous SrFeO(2.5) and CaFeO(2.5) by temperature dependent oxygen isotope exchange as well as by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies, combined with ab initio (DFT) molecular dynamical calculations. From (18)O/(16)O isotope exchange experiments we proved free oxygen mobility to be realized in SrFeO(x) already below 600 K. We have also evidence that low temperature oxygen mobility relies on the existence of specific, low energy lattice modes, which trigger and amplify oxygen mobility in solids. We interpret the INS data together with the DFT-based molecular dynamical simulation results on SrFeO(2.5) and CaFeO(2.5) in terms of an enhanced, phonon-assisted, low temperature oxygen diffusion for SrFeO(3-x) as a result of the strongly reduced Fe-O-Fe bond strength of the apical oxygen atoms in the FeO(6) octahedra along the stacking axis. This dynamically triggered phenomenon leads to an easy migration of the oxide ions into the open vacancy channels and vice versa. The decisive impact of lattice dynamics, giving rise to structural instabilities in oxygen deficient perovskites, especially with brownmillerite-type structure, is demonstrated, opening new concepts for the design and tailoring of low temperature oxygen ion conductors.

Softening of Cu-O bond stretching phonons in tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+delta

Phonons in nearly optimally doped HgBa(2)CuO(4+delta) were studied by inelastic x-ray scattering. The dispersion of the low-energy modes is well described by a shell model, while the Cu-O bond stretching mode at high energy shows strong softening towards the zone boundary, which deviates strongly from the model. This seems to be common in the hole-doped high-T(c) superconducting cuprates, and, based on this work, not related to a lattice distortion specific to each material.

Electron-phonon interaction in the t-J model

We derive a t-J model with electron-phonon coupling from the three-band model, considering modulation of both hopping and Coulomb integrals by phonons. While the modulation of the hopping integrals dominates, the modulation of the Coulomb integrals cannot be neglected. The model explains the experimentally observed anomalous softening of the half-breathing mode upon doping and a weaker softening of the breathing mode. It is shown that other phonons are not strongly influenced, and, in particular, the coupling to a buckling mode is not strong in this model.

Oxygen isotope effect in the ab-plane reflectance of underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)

We have measured the effect of oxygen isotope substitution on the ab-plane reflectance of underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta). The frequency shift of the transverse optic phonons due to the substitution of 16O by 18O yields an isotope effect of the expected magnitude for copper-oxygen stretching modes with alpha=0.5+/-0.1. The reflectance shoulder at 400-500 cm(-1) shows a much smaller exponent of alpha=0.1+/-0.1 in the normal state and alpha=0.23+/-0.1 in the superconducting state. These observations suggest that the shoulder is of electronic origin and not due to a phonon mode as has been suggested recently.

Bond-stretching-phonon anomalies in stripe-ordered La1.69Sr0.31NiO4

We report a neutron scattering study of bond-stretching phonons in La1.69Sr0.31NiO4, a doped antiferromagnet in which the added holes order in diagonal stripes at 45 to the Ni-O bonds. For the highest-energy longitudinal optical mode along the bonds, a softening of 20% is observed between the Brillouin zone center and the zone boundary. At 45 to the bonds, a splitting of the same magnitude is found across much of the zone. Surprisingly, the charge-ordering wave vector plays no apparent role in the anomalous dispersions. The implications for related anomalies in the cuprates are discussed.

Stripe conductivity in La1.775Sr0.225NiO4

We report Raman light-scattering and optical conductivity measurements on a single crystal of La1.775Sr0.225NiO4 which exhibits incommensurate charge-stripe order. The extra phonon peaks induced by stripe order can be understood in terms of the energies of phonons that occur at the charge-order wave vector Q(c). A strong Fano antiresonance for a Ni-O bond-stretching mode provides clear evidence for finite dynamical conductivity within the charge stripes.
