Anomalous oxygen isotope effect in La2-xSrxCuO4

Multi-Band Superconductivity and the Steep Band/Flat Band Scenario

The basic features of multi-band superconductivity and its implications are derived. In particular, it is shown that enhancements of the superconducting transition temperature take place due to interband interactions. In addition, isotope effects differ substantially from the typical BCS scheme as soon as polaronic coupling effects are present. Special cases of the model are polaronic coupling in one band as realized e.g., in cuprates, coexistence of a flat band and a steep band like in MgB2, crossovers between extreme cases. The advantages of the multiband approach as compared to the single band BCS model are elucidated and its rather frequent realization in actual systems discussed.

Isotope and multiband effects in layered superconductors

In this review we consider three classes of superconductors, namely cuprate superconductors, MgB(2) and the new Fe based superconductors. All of these three systems are layered materials and multiband compounds. Their pairing mechanisms are under discussion with the exception of MgB(2), which is widely accepted to be a 'conventional' electron-phonon interaction mediated superconductor, but extending the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory to account for multiband effects. Cuprates and Fe based superconductors have higher superconducting transition temperatures and more complex structures. Superconductivity is doping dependent in these material classes unlike in MgB(2) which, as a pure compound, has the highest values of T(c) and a rapid suppression of superconductivity with doping takes place. In all three material classes isotope effects have been observed, including exotic ones in the cuprates, and controversial ones in the Fe based materials. Before the area of high-temperature superconductivity, isotope effects on T(c) were the signature for phonon mediated superconductivity-even when deviations from the BCS value to smaller values were observed. Since the discovery of high T(c) materials this is no longer evident since competing mechanisms might exist and other mediating pairing interactions are discussed which are of purely electronic origin. In this work we will compare the three different material classes and especially discuss the experimentally observed isotope effects of all three systems and present a rather general analysis of them. Furthermore, we will concentrate on multiband signatures which are not generally accepted in cuprates even though they are manifest in various experiments, the evidence for those in MgB(2), and indications for them in the Fe based compounds. Mostly we will consider experimental data, but when possible also discuss theoretical models which are suited to explain the data.

Unified picture of the oxygen isotope effect in cuprate superconductors

High-temperature superconductivity in cuprates was discovered almost exactly 20 years ago, but a satisfactory theoretical explanation for this phenomenon is still lacking. The isotope effect has played an important role in establishing electron-phonon interaction as the dominant interaction in conventional superconductors. Here we present a unified picture of the oxygen isotope effect in cuprate superconductors based on a phonon-mediated d-wave pairing model within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. We show that this model accounts for the magnitude of the isotope exponent as functions of the doping level as well as the variation between different cuprate superconductors. The isotope effect on the superconducting transition is also found to resemble the effect of pressure on the transition. These results indicate that the role of phonons should not be overlooked for explaining the superconductivity in cuprates.

Anomalous isotopic effect near the charge-ordering quantum criticality

Within the Hubbard-Holstein model, we evaluate the crossover lines marking the opening of pseudogaps in the cuprates, which, in our scenario, are ruled by the proximity to a charge-ordering quantum criticality (stripe formation). We find that their isotopic dependence, due to critical fluctuations, implies a substantial positive shift of the pseudogap-formation temperature T(*). We infer that the isotopic shift of the superconducting T(c) is nearly absent in the optimally and overdoped regimes and is negative and increasing upon underdoping. The dynamical nature of the charge-ordering transition may explain the spread of the experimental values of T(*).

Oxygen-isotope effect on the In-plane penetration depth in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals

We report measurements of the oxygen-isotope effect (OIE) on the in-plane penetration depth lambda(ab)(0) in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals. A highly sensitive magnetic torque sensor with a resolution of Deltatau approximately 10(-12) N m was used for the magnetic measurements on microcrystals with a mass of approximately 10 &mgr;g. The OIE on lambda(-2)(ab)(0) is found to be -10(2)% for x = 0.080 and -8(1)% for x = 0.086. It arises mainly from the oxygen-mass dependence of the in-plane effective mass m(*)(ab). The present results suggest that lattice vibrations are important for the occurrence of high temperature superconductivity.

SOME CHEMICAL AND STRUCTURAL EFFECTS ON THE PROPERTIES OF HIGH-Tc SUPERCONDUCTORS

▪ Abstract  The history of superconductivity, including superconductivity in the high-Tc cuprates, is reviewed very briefly, and the differences between conventional superconductors and the high-Tc cuprates are summarized. The basic crystal structures of the major series of high-Tc cuprates are described and compared. The relation of structures to superconducting properties is reviewed with an emphasis on the orthorhombic-tetragonal transition in (La2−x Srx)CuO4; the corresponding transition, and also the transition to the low-temperature tetragonal phase in (La2−xBax)CuO4; and the effects of oxygen vacancies, oxygen-vacancy ordering, frozen-in disorder, and occupation of the off-chain O(5) sites in YBa2Cu3O7−δ. The effects of chemical substitutions of lanthanide elements on the La/Sr sites in (La2−xSrx)CuO4 and on the Y sites in YBa2Cu3O7−δ, and of 3d elements and sp elements on the Cu sites in both systems are reviewed. The difference between the effects of the lanthanide substitutions, particularly Pr, in the two systems are considered. Major properties of the Bi-, Tl-, and Hg-cuprates, are described briefly. A comparison of the high-Tc cuprates with noncuprate oxide superconductors is given.
