Vibrational relaxation and dephasing of two-phonon bound states in molecular crystals

Quantum self-trapping on a star graph

The attractive Bose-Hubbard model is applied for describing the two-exciton dynamics in a nonlinear quantum star graph. When the excitons are created on the core of the star, it is shown that the interplay between the complex architecture of the network and the nonlinearity favors the occurrence of a real quantum self-trapping. Quite weak in the small nonlinearity limit, this self-localization is enhanced as the nonlinearity increases. This feature originates in the restructuring of the two-exciton eigenstates whose localized nature intensifies with the nonlinearity. Nevertheless, the quantum self-trapping is never complete since it is impossible to localize the entire exciton density, even in the strong nonlinearity limit.

Two-exciton bound state quantum self-trapping in an extended star graph

The attractive Bose-Hubbard model is applied for describing the quantum self-trapping in an extended star graph. In the strong coupling limit and when two excitons are created on the core of the star, the dynamics is dominated by pair states whose properties is governed by the branch number $N$. When $N=2$, the star reduces to a linear chain so that the energy does not self-localize. Conversely, when $N\geq3$, a restructuring of the eigenstates arises and a low-energy state occurs describing a pair localized on the core of the star. Preferentially excited, this localized state gives rise to a quantum self-trapping of the energy, a process that intensifies as $N$ increases.

Comment on "Fermi resonance in solid CO2 under pressure" [J. Chem. Phys. 138, 074501 (2013)]

The purpose of this comment is to point out that for a really rigorous treatment of the Fermi resonance in crystalline CO2 it is necessary to go beyond a single molecule approach and to fully consider solid state effects.

Vibron-polaron in α-helices. II. Two-vibron bound states

The two-vibron dynamics associated to amide-I vibrations in a three-dimensional (3D) alpha-helix is described according to a generalized Davydov model. The helix is modeled by three spines of hydrogen-bonded peptide units linked via covalent bonds. It is shown that the two-vibron energy spectrum supports both a two-vibron free states continuum and two kinds of bound states, called two-vibron bound states (TVBS)-I and TVBS-II, connected to the trapping of two vibrons onto the same amide-I mode and onto two nearest-neighbor amide-I modes belonging to the same spine, respectively. At low temperature, nonvanishing interspine hopping constants yield a three-dimensional nature of both TVBS-I and TVBS-II which the wave functions extend over the three spines of the helix. At biological temperature, the pairs are confined in a given spine and exhibit the same features as the bound states described within a one-dimensional model. The interplay between the temperature and the 3D nature of the helix is also responsible for the occurrence of a third bound state called TVBS-III which refers to the trapping of two vibrons onto two different spines. The experimental signature of the existence of bound states is discussed through the simulation of their infrared pump-probe spectroscopic response. Finally, the fundamental question of the breather-like behavior of two-vibron bound states is addressed.

Relaxation channels of two-vibron bound states in alpha-helix proteins

Relaxation channels for two-vibron bound states in an anharmonic alpha-helix protein are studied. According to a recently established small polaron model [V. Pouthier, Phys. Rev. E 68, 021909 (2003)], it is shown that the relaxation originates in the interaction between the dressed anharmonic vibrons and the remaining phonons. This interaction is responsible for the occurrence of transitions between two-vibron eigenstates mediated by both phonon absorption and phonon emission. At biological temperature, the relaxation rate does not significantly depend on the nature of the two-vibron states involved in the process. The lifetime for both bound and free states is of the same order of magnitude and ranges between 0.1 and 1.0 ps for realistic parameter values. By contrast, the relaxation channels strongly depend on the nature of the two-vibron states which is a consequence of the breatherlike behavior of the two-vibron bound states.

Two-vibron bound states in alpha-helix proteins: the interplay between the intramolecular anharmonicity and the strong vibron-phonon coupling

The influence of the intramolecular anharmonicity and the strong vibron-phonon coupling on the two-vibron dynamics in an alpha-helix protein is studied within a modified Davydov model. The intramolecular anharmonicity of each amide-I vibration is considered, and the vibron dynamics is described according to the small polaron approach. A unitary transformation is performed to remove the intramolecular anharmonicity, and a modified Lang-Firsov transformation is applied to renormalize the vibron-phonon interaction. Then a mean field procedure is realized to obtain the dressed anharmonic vibron Hamiltonian. It is shown that the anharmonicity modifies the vibron-phonon interaction, which results in an enhancement of the dressing effect. In addition, both the anharmonicity and the dressing favor the occurrence of two different bound states whose properties strongly depend on the interplay between the anharmonicity and the dressing. This dependence was summarized in a phase diagram which characterizes the number and the nature of the bound states as a function of the relevant parameters of the problem. For a significant anharmonicity, the low-frequency bound states describe two vibrons trapped onto the same amide-I vibration, whereas the high-frequency bound states refer to the trapping of the two vibrons onto nearest neighbor amide-I vibrations.
