63Cu NMR and hole depletion in the normal state of yttrium-rich Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7

Contrasting Phenomenology of NMR Shifts in Cuprate Superconductors

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shifts, if stripped of their uncertainties, must hold key information about the electronic fluid in the cuprates. The early shift interpretation that favored a single-fluid scenario will be reviewed, as well as recent experiments that reported its failure. Thereafter, based on literature shift data for planar Cu, a contrasting shift phenomenology for cuprate superconductors is developed, which is very different from the early view while being in agreement with all published data. For example, it will be shown that the hyperfine scenario used up to now is inadequate as a large isotropic shift component is discovered. Furthermore, the changes of the temperature dependences of the shifts above and below the superconducting transitions temperature proceed according to a few rules that were not discussed before. It appears that there can be substantial spin shift at the lowest temperature if the magnetic field is perpendicular to the CuO 2 plane, which points to a localization of spin in the 3 d ( x 2 − y 2 ) orbital. A simple model is presented based on the most fundamental findings. The analysis must have new consequences for theory of the cuprates.

Phenomenological model of protected behavior in the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprate superconductors

By extending previous work on the scaling of low frequency magnetic properties of the 2-1-4 cuprates to the 1-2-3 materials, we arrive at a consistent phenomenological description of protected behavior in the pseudogap state of the magnetically underdoped cuprates. Between zero hole doping and a doping level of approximately 0.22, it reflects the presence of a mixture of an insulating spin liquid that produces the measured magnetic scaling behavior and a Fermi liquid that becomes superconducting for doping levels x>0.06. Our analysis suggests the existence of two quantum critical points, at doping levels x approximately 0.05 and x approximately 0.22, and that d-wave superconductivity in the pseudogap region arises from quasiparticle-spin liquid interaction, i.e., magnetic interactions between quasiparticles in the Fermi liquid induced by their coupling to the spin liquid excitations.

Nuclear magnetic resonance study of the electron-doped high-temperature superconducting cuprates

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been made on two of the electron-doped high-temperature superconducting cuprates (HTSCs), Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) and Sr(0.9)La(0.1)CuO(2) that represent the two known electron-doped structures. The results are compared with the more-studied hole-doped HTSCs. We show that the electron and hole-doped HTSCs probe a similar antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation spectrum in the normal state, which provides support for theories of superconductivity where the pairing is mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and the superconducting order parameter has a [Formula: see text] symmetry. Contrary to results from underdoped and hole-doped HTSCs, there is no evidence for a normal-state pseudogap in the NMR data from measurements on the electron-doped HTSCs. Therefore, the electron-doped HTSCs can be better compared with overdoped and hole-doped HTSCs where the normal-state pseudogap is absent. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation spectrum as probed by the Cu spin-lattice relaxation rate, is independent of the doped electrons per Cu. A similar effect is observed in the overdoped and hole-doped HTSC, Y(1-x)Ca(x)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) for a hole concentration range of approximately 0.063. The anomalous Cu NMR linewidth anisotropy observed in the electron-doped HTSCs suggests a small and static spin variation for temperatures up to room temperature.
