Ultrahigh-pressure structural phase transitions in Cr, Mo, and W

Study on the Melting Temperature, the Jumps of Volume, Enthalpy and Entropy at Melting Point, and the Debye Temperature for the BCC Defective and Perfect Interstitial Alloy WSi under Pressure

The objective of this study is to determine the analytic expressions of the Helmholtz free energy, the equilibrium vacancy concentration, the melting temperature, the jumps of volume, enthalpy the mean nearest neighbor distance and entropy at melting point, the Debye temperature for the BCC defective, the limiting temperature of absolute stability for the crystalline state, and for the perfect binary interstitial alloy. The results obtained from the expressions are combined with the statistical moment method, the limiting condition of the absolute stability at the crystalline state, the Clausius–Clapeyron equation, the Debye model and the Gruneisen equation. Our numerical calculations of obtained theoretical results were carried out for alloy WSi under high temperature and pressure. Our calculated melting curve and relation between the melting temperature and the silicon concentration for WSi are in good agreement with other calculations. Our calculations for the jumps of volume, enthalpy and entropy, and the Debye temperature for WSi predict and orient experimental results in the future.

X-ray diffraction measurements of Mo melting to 119 GPa and the high pressure phase diagram

In this paper, we report angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction data of molybdenum melting, measured in a double-sided laser-heated diamond-anvil cell up to a pressure of 119 GPa and temperatures up to 3400 K. The new melting temperatures are in excellent agreement with earlier measurements up to 90 GPa that relied on optical observations of melting and in strong contrast to most theoretical estimates. The X-ray measurements show that the solid melts from the bcc structure throughout the reported pressure range and provide no evidence for a high temperature transition from bcc to a close-packed structure, or to any other crystalline structure. This observation contradicts earlier interpretations of shock data arguing for such a transition. Instead, the values for the Poisson ratios of shock compressed Mo, obtained from the sound speed measurements, and the present X-ray evidence of loss of long-range order suggest that the 210 GPa (approximately 4100 K) transition in the shock experiment is from the bcc structure to a new, highly viscous, structured melt.

Molybdenum at high pressure and temperature: melting from another solid phase

The Gibbs free energies of bcc and fcc Mo are calculated from first principles in the quasiharmonic approximation in the pressure range from 350 to 850 GPa at room temperatures up to 7500 K. It is found that Mo, stable in the bcc phase at low temperatures, has lower free energy in the fcc structure than in the bcc phase at elevated temperatures. Our density-functional-theory-based molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that fcc melts at higher than bcc temperatures above 1.5 Mbar. Our calculated melting temperatures and bcc-fcc boundary are consistent with the Mo Hugoniot sound speed measurements. We find that melting occurs at temperatures significantly above the bcc-fcc boundary. This suggests an explanation of the recent diamond anvil cell experiments, which find a phase boundary in the vicinity of our extrapolated bcc-fcc boundary.

Structural phase transition of vanadium at 69 GPa

A phase transition was observed at 63-69 GPa and room temperature in vanadium with synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The transition is characterized as a rhombohedral lattice distortion of the body-centered-cubic vanadium without a discontinuity in the pressure-volume data, thus representing a novel type of transition that has never been observed in elements. Instead of driven by the conventional s-d electronic transition mechanism, the phase transition could be associated with the softening of C44 trigonal elasticity tensor that originates from the combination of Fermi surface nesting, band Jahn-Teller distortion, and electronic topological transition.

Noblest of all metals is structurally unstable at high pressure

In a series of experiments in externally electrically heated diamond anvil cells we demonstrate that at pressures above approximately 240 GPa gold adopts a hexagonal-close-packed structure. Ab initio calculations predict that at pressures about 250 GPa different stacking sequences of close-packed atomic layers in gold become virtually degenerate in energy, strongly supporting the experimental observations.

High-pressure melting of molybdenum

The melting curve of the body-centered cubic (bcc) phase of Mo has been determined for a wide pressure range using both direct ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of melting as well as a phenomenological theory of melting. These two methods show very good agreement. The simulations are based on density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. Our calculated equation of state of bcc Mo is in excellent agreement with experimental data. However, our melting curve is substantially higher than the one determined in diamond anvil cell experiments up to a pressure of 100 GPa. An explanation is suggested for this discrepancy.
