First-principles study on electronic structure of the (001) surface of SrTiO3

Electric field induced reversal of spin polarization, magnetic anisotropy and tailored Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in underoxidized SrRuO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Electric field tailored magnetic properties of the perovskite-type oxide heterostructures are important in spintronic devices with low energy consumption and small size. Here, the electric field modulated magnetic properties of underoxidized SrRuO3 (SRO)/SrTiO3 (STO) heterostructures are investigated using first-principles calculations. The spin polarization of underoxidized SRO/STO heterostructures turns from negative to positive as the electric field changes from -0.2 to 0.2 V nm-1. The underoxidized SRO/STO heterostructure with 7 SRO atomic layers turns from perpendicular magnetic anisotropy to in-plane magnetic anisotropy as the electric field turns from -0.2 to 0.2 V nm-1, which can be attributed to the in-plane dx2-y2 and out-of-plane dxz, dyz orbitals. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction of underoxidized SRO/STO heterostructures can also be effectively tailored using an electric field. These results indicate that the use of electric field is an effective method to modulate magnetic properties of perovskite-type oxide heterostructures, which is beneficial for the development of the high-performance spintronic devices.

Termination control of electronic phases in oxide thin films and interfaces: LaAlO3/SrTiO3(001)

A wealth of intriguing properties emerge in the seemingly simple system composed of the band insulators LaAlO(3) and SrTiO(3) such as a two-dimensional electron gas, superconductivity and magnetism. In this paper, we review the current insight obtained from first principles calculations on the mechanisms governing the behaviour of thin LaAlO(3) films on SrTiO(3)(001). In particular, we explore the strong dependence of the electronic properties on the surface and interface termination, the finite film thickness, lattice polarization and defects. A further aspect that is addressed is how the electronic behaviour and functionality can be tuned by an SrTiO(3) capping layer, adsorbates and metallic contacts. Lastly, we discuss recent reports on the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in this system for what they might imply about the electronic structure of this system.

Parallel electron-hole bilayer conductivity from electronic interface reconstruction

The perovskite SrTiO3-LaAlO3 structure has advanced to a model system to investigate the rich electronic phenomena arising at polar oxide interfaces. Using first principles calculations and transport measurements we demonstrate that an additional SrTiO3 capping layer prevents atomic reconstruction at the LaAlO3 surface and triggers the electronic reconstruction at a significantly lower LaAlO3 film thickness than for the uncapped systems. Combined theoretical and experimental evidence (from magnetotransport and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy) suggests two spatially separated sheets with electron and hole carriers, that are as close as 1 nm.

Ab initio study of structural and electronic properties of SrTiO3 (001) oxygen-vacancy surfaces

First-principles calculations are employed to study the surface relaxation and electronic structure of the fully relaxed SrTiO(3) (001) oxygen-vacancy surfaces with both Sr and Ti terminations. In contrast to the perfect surface, the larger surface rumples and smaller interlayer distances have been found. Some in-gap Ti 3d states at about -1.13 eV below the Fermi level were observed in the Ti-terminated surface caused by oxygen vacancies. For the Sr-terminated oxygen-vacancy surface, some in-gap Ti 3d states move into the bulk midgap region to become partially occupied. These theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental data.

Wedge-shaped potential and Airy-function electron localization in oxide superlattices

Oxide superlattices and microstructures hold the promise for creating a new class of devices with unprecedented functionalities. Density-functional studies of the recently fabricated, lattice-matched perovskite titanates (SrTiO3)n/(LaTiO3)m reveal a classic wedge-shaped potential well for the monolayer (m = 1) structure, originating from the Coulomb potential of a two-dimensional charged La sheet. The potential in turn confines the electrons in the Airy-function-localized states. Magnetism is suppressed for the monolayer structure, while in structures with a thicker LaTiO3 part, bulk antiferromagnetism is recovered, with a narrow transition region separating the magnetic LaTiO3 and the nonmagnetic SrTiO3.
