Reconstructive adsorption of Na on Al(111) studied by scanning tunneling microscopy

Surface structure and phase transition of K adsorption on Au(111): by ab initio atomistic thermodynamics

We studied the interactions between atomic potassium (K) and Au(111) at a range of coverage (i.e., Θ(K) = 0.11-0.5 monolayer (ML)) by ab initio atomic thermodynamics. For K on-surface adsorption, we found that K energetically favors the three-fold hollow sites (fcc or hcp), while the most significant surface rumpling was obtained at the atop sites. The incorporation of gold atoms in the adsorbate layer gradually becomes energetically favorable with increasing K coverage. We proposed a possible model with a stoichiometry of K(2)Au for the (2 × 2)-0.5 ML phase observed in lower energy electron diffraction (LEED): one K at atop site and the other K as well as one Au adatom at the second-nearest fcc/hcp and hcp/fcc, respectively. Clear theoretical evidences were given for the ionic interaction of K on Au surface. Additionally, phase transitions were predicted based on chemical potential equilibrium of K, largely in line with the earlier reported LEED observations: the clean surface → (√3 × √3)R30° → (2 × 2), and (2 × 2) → (√3 × √3)R30° reversely at an elevated temperature.

Selectivity of auger decays to the local surface environment

The line shape of the Auger decay of adatoms is studied by a joint theoretical and experimental effort, the former within a DFT framework, and the latter with synchrotron radiation measurements. We investigate the KL(2,3)V Auger deexcitation of Na on Al(111), a system with different adsorption geometries. In particular, we study the (sqrt[3]xsqrt[3])R30 degrees phase at 1/3 ML (monolayer) and the more complex (2 x 2) structure at 1/2 ML coverage. From the comparison between theory and experiment, we unambiguously determine features that allow for the determination of the adsorption environment from the adatom Auger spectrum.

Bulk terminated NaCl(111) on aluminum: a polar surface of an ionic crystal?

Atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy reveals the existence of triangular (111) bulk terminated NaCl islands. The islands can be grown by subsequent adsorption of Na and Cl2 on Al(111) and Al(100) or by conversion of stoichiometric NaCl(100) islands to NaCl(111) via additional Na adsorption. The NaCl(111) islands have Na-Cl-Na sandwich structure. Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of these islands show that each of the Na atoms carries half a positive elementary charge, leaving the islands neutral and explaining the existence of an otherwise unstable surface.
