Hole-polaron formation in the two-dimensional Holstein t-J model: A variational Lanczos study

Evidence for a Nematic Phase in La_{1.75}Sr_{0.25}NiO_{4}

Determining the nature of electronic states in doped Mott insulators remains a challenging task. In the case of tetragonal La_{2-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{4}, the occurrence of diagonal charge and spin stripe order in the ground state is now well established. In contrast, the nature of the high-temperature "disordered" state from which the stripe order develops has long been a subject of controversy, with considerable speculation regarding a polaronic liquid. Following the recent detection of dynamic charge stripes, we use neutron scattering measurements on an x=0.25 crystal to demonstrate that the dispersion of the charge-stripe excitations is anisotropic. This observation provides compelling evidence for the presence of electronic nematic order.

Electron-phonon coupling in high-temperature cuprate superconductors determined from electron relaxation rates

We determined electronic relaxation times via pump-probe optical spectroscopy using sub-15 fs pulses for the normal state of two different cuprate superconductors. We show that the primary relaxation process is the electron-phonon interaction and extract a measure of its strength, the second moment of the Eliashberg function λ[ω2] = 800 ± 200 meV2 for La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 and λ[ω2] = 400 ± 100 meV2 for YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.5). These values suggest a possible fundamental role of the electron-phonon interaction in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Interface controlled electronic charge inhomogeneities in correlated heterostructures

For heterostructures of ultrathin, strongly correlated copper-oxide films and dielectric perovskite layers, we predict inhomogeneous electronic interface states. Our study is based on an extended Hubbard model for the cuprate film. The interface is implemented by a coupling to the electron and phonon degrees of freedom of the dielectric oxide layer. We find that electronic ordering in the film is associated with a strongly inhomogeneous polaron effect. We propose to consider the interfacial tuning as a powerful mechanism to control the charge ordering in correlated electronic systems.

Self-localization of composite spin-lattice polarons

Self-localization of holes in the Holstein t-J model is studied in the adiabatic limit using exact diagonalization and the retraceable path approximation. It is shown that the critical electron-phonon coupling lambda c decreases with increasing J and that this behavior is determined mainly by the incoherent rather than by the coherent motion of the hole. The obtained spin correlation functions in the localized region can be understood within a percolation picture where antiferromagnetic order can persist up to a substantial hole doping. These results restrict the possibility of self-localization of holes in lightly doped cuprates.

Mobile bipolaron

We explore the properties of the bipolaron in a 1D Holstein-Hubbard model with dynamical quantum phonons. Using a recently developed variational method combined with analytical strong coupling calculations, we compute correlation functions, effective mass, bipolaron isotope effect, and the phase diagram. The two site bipolaron has a significantly reduced mass and isotope effect compared to the on-site bipolaron, and is bound in the strong coupling regime up to twice the Hubbard U naively expected. The model can be described in this regime as an effective t-J-V model with nearest neighbor repulsion. These are the most accurate bipolaron calculations to date.
