Adsorption of sodium and potassium on a gold(100) surface: An example of alkali-metal-induced deconstruction

Francium ion source with novel methods of target heating and beam characterization

We have developed a novel ion source and beam diagnostic system for the production and detection of radioactive francium (Fr) isotopes. The Fr ions are produced using a fusion-evaporation reaction at the RIKEN Nishina Center, Japan. The installation of an infrared heater has enabled a precise and rapid control of the target temperature, and the newly developed diagnostic system allows for a quantitative characterization of the extracted ion beam. With the new system, an analysis of the Fr208-211 isotopes has been performed. Additionally, the flux of Fr210 ions has been estimated as 6.7 × 10⁶ s^-1 corresponding to an extraction efficiency of 24.5% and a beam purity of 1.6 × 10^-5.

Free silver nanoparticles doped by potassium: Work-function change in experiment and theory

The composition-dependent change in the work-function (WF) of binary silver-potassium nanoparticles has been studied experimentally by synchrotron-based x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and theoretically using a microscopic jellium model of metals. The Ag-K particles with different K fractions were produced by letting a beam of preformed Ag particles pass through a volume with K vapor. The PES on a beam of individual non-supported Ag-K nanoparticles created in this way allowed a direct absolute measurement of their WF, avoiding several usual shortcomings of the method. Experimentally, the WF has been found to be very sensitive to K concentration: Already at low exposure, it decreased down to ≈2 eV-below the value of pure K. In the jellium modeling, considered for Ag-K nanoparticles, two principally different adsorption patterns were tested: without and with K diffusion. The experimental and calculation results together suggest that only efficient surface alloying of two metals, whose immiscibility was long-term textbook knowledge, could lead to the observed WF values.

Reversible Potassium Intercalation in Blue Phosphorene-Au Network Driven by an Electric Field

Foreign atom intercalation into an interface alters the strength of interlayer interaction and leads to the novel types of desirable properties. Here, we report an investigation via scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) of reversible potassium (K) intercalation in the blue phosphorene (blueP)-Au network that can be locally induced by an external electric field. The unique structure of the blueP-Au network provides large space in its pores for the intercalation and deintercalation process. The X-ray photoemission spectroscopy results reveal that the intercalated K atoms are bonded with Au atoms in substrate, which weakens the interaction between the blueP-Au network and Au(111). The STS and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results indicate that the electronic properties of the blueP-Au network have been modulated after the K intercalation. Such reversible intercalation and deintercalation transitions in the blueP-Au network are relevant for the design of the nanoelectronic devices as well as for its application in K-ion batteries.

MP2 Study on Adsorption of Hydrated Na+ and Au+ Cations on the Au(111) Surface

The interactions of Na+ and Au+ cations with an Au(111) surface in the presence and absence of water molecules were investigated using Au18 and Au22 cluster models and the MP2 method with a triple-zeta valence basis set. The interactions between Na+ ions and the Au(111) surface were found to be primarily electrostatic, contrary to the much stronger Au+-Au(111) interactions that were dominated by orbital contributions. The largest CP-corrected MP2 adsorption energies were -156.9 kJ/mol for Na+ and -478.7 kJ/mol for Au+. When hydrated, Na+ prefers to be completely surrounded by water molecules rather than adsorbed to the surface, whereas Au+ remains adsorbed to the surface as water molecules bond with each other and with the Au surface. CP correction did not change the relative adsorption energy trends of Na+ or Au+ ions, but it had an effect on the interaction energy trends of the hydrated cations because of the weak water-surface and water-water interactions.
