Brillouin scattering in Co/Cu/Co and Co/Au/Co trilayers: Anisotropy fields and interlayer magnetic exchange

Nonreciprocal collective magnetostatic wave modes in geometrically asymmetric bilayer structure with nonmagnetic spacer

Nonreciprocity, i.e. inequivalence in amplitudes and frequencies of spin waves propagating in opposite directions, is a key property underlying functionality in prospective magnonic devices. Here we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically a simple approach to induce frequency nonreciprocity in a magnetostatically coupled ferromagnetic bilayer structure with a nonmagnetic spacer by its geometrical asymmetry. Using Brillouin light scattering, we show the formation of two collective spin wave modes in Fe₈₁Ga₁₉/Cu/Fe₈₁Ga₁₉ structure with different thicknesses of ferromagnetic layers. Experimental reconstruction and theoretical modeling of the dispersions of acoustic and optical collective spin wave modes reveal that both possess nonreciprocity reaching several percent at the wavenumber of 22 × 10⁴ rad cm^-1. The analysis demonstrates that the shift of the amplitudes of counter-propagating coupled modes towards either of the layers is responsible for the nonreciprocity because of the pronounced dependence of spin wave frequency on the layers' thickness. The proposed approach enables the design of multilayered ferromagnetic structures with a given spin wave dispersion for magnonic logic gates.

Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida-type interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures

The manipulation of magnetization with interfacial modification using various spin-orbit coupling phenomena has been recently revisited due to its scientific and technological potential for next-generation memory devices. Herein, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction characteristics penetrating through a MgO dielectric layer inserted between the Pt and CoFeSiB. The inserted MgO layer seems to function as a chiral exchange interaction mediator of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction from the heavy metal atoms to ferromagnet ones. The potential physical mechanism of the anti-symmetric exchange is based on the tunneling-like behavior of conduction electrons through the semi-conductor-like ultrathin MgO. Such behavior can be correlated with the oscillations of the indirect exchange coupling of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type. From the theoretical demonstration, we could provide approximate estimation and show qualitative trends peculiar to the system under investigation.

Magnetic properties of exchange biased and of unbiased oxide/permalloy thin layers: a ferromagnetic resonance and Brillouin scattering study

Microstrip ferromagnetic resonance and Brillouin scattering are used to provide a comparative determination of the magnetic parameters of thin permalloy layers interfaced with a non-magnetic (Al(2)O(3)) or with an antiferromagnetic oxide (NiO). It results from our microstructural study that no preferential texture is favoured in the observed polycrystalline sublayers. It is shown that the perpendicular anisotropy can be monitored using an interfacial surface energy term which is practically independent of the nature of the interface. In the interval of thicknesses investigated (5-25 nm) the saturation magnetization does not significantly differ from the reported one in bulk permalloy. In-plane uniaxial anisotropy and exchange bias anisotropy are also derived from the study of the dynamic magnetic excitations and compared with our independent evaluations using conventional magnetometry.
