Molecular-dynamics prediction of structural anomalies in ferroelectric and dielectric BaTiO3-SrTiO3-CaTiO3 solid solutions

Mechanical Control of Polar Patterns in Wrinkled Thin Films via Flexoelectricity

Intriguing topological polar structures in oxide nanofilms have drawn growing attention owing to their immense potential applications in nanoscale electronic devices. Here, we report a novel route to mechanically manipulate polar structures via flexoelectricity in wrinkled thin films. Our results present a flexoelectric polar transition from a nonpolar state to uniaxial polar stripes, biaxial meronlike or antimeronlike polar structures, and polar labyrinths by varying wrinkle morphologies. The evolution mechanisms and the outstanding mechanical tunability of these flexoelectric polar patterns were investigated theoretically and numerically. This strategy based on flexoelectricity for generating nontrivial polar structures will no longer rely on the superlattice structure and can be widely applicable to all centrosymmetric or noncentrosymmetric materials, providing a broader range of material and structure candidates for polar topologies.

Crystal Structural Characteristics and Electrical Properties of (Ba0.7Sr0.3-xCax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 Ceramics Prepared Using the Citrate Gelation Method

The electrical properties of (Ba0.7Sr0.3-xCax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) (BSCTZ) ceramics prepared using citrate gelation (CG) method were investigated by substituting Ca2+ ions for the Sr2+ sites based on the structural characteristics of the ceramics. BSCTZ was sintered for 3 h at 1300 °C, lower than the temperature (1550 °C) at which the specimens prepared using the solid-state reaction (SSR) method were sintered, which lasted for 6 h. As the amount of substituted Ca2+ ions increased, the unit cell volume of the BSCTZ decreased because of the smaller ionic radius of the Ca2+ ions compared to the Sr2+ ions. The dielectric constant of BaTiO3-based ceramics is imparted by factors such as the tetragonality and B-site bond valence of the ceramics. Although the ceramic tetragonality increased with Ca2+ ion substitution, the x = 0.05 specimens exhibited the highest dielectric constant. The decrease in the dielectric constant of the sintered x > 0.05 specimens was attributed to the increase in the B-site bond valence of the ABO3 perovskite structure. Owing to the large number of grain boundaries, the breakdown voltage (6.6839 kV/mm) of the BSCTZ prepared using the CG method was significantly improved in relation to that (2.0043 kV/mm) of the specimen prepared using the SSR method.

Perovskite ferroelectric nanomaterials

In this review, the main concept of ferroelectricity of perovskite oxides and related materials at nanometer scale and existing difficulties in the synthesis of those nanocrystals are discussed. Important effects, such as depolarization field and size effect, on the existence of ferroelectricity in perovskite nanocrystals are deliberated. In the discussion of modeling works, different theoretical calculations are pinpointed focusing on their studies of lattice dynamics, phase transitions, new origin of ferroelectricity in nanostructures, etc. As the major part of this review, recent research progress in the facile synthesis, characterization and various applications of perovskite ferroelectric nanomaterials, such as BaTiO₃, PbTiO₃, PbZrO₃, and BiFeO₃, are also scrutinized. Perspectives concerning the future direction of ferroelectric nanomaterials research and its potential applications in renewable energy, etc., are presented. This review provides an overview in this area and guidance for further studies in perovskite ferroelectric nanomaterials and their applications.

Low-temperature elastic anomalies in CaTiO3: dynamical characterization

Pulse-echo ultrasonic measurements of elastic coefficients of CaTiO(3) show anomalous behavior around 200 K, with a notable rise in the attenuation coefficient. Molecular dynamics simulation is used to simulate the elastic response of a mono-domain (MDm) and a poly-domain (PDm) configuration of CaTiO(3) using the Vashishta-Raman interatomic potential. The PDm is obtained by cooling the melt from 3600 to 300 K at a rate of 0.5 K ps(-1), so that it recrystallizes to the PDm orthorhombic configuration. The elastic behavior is simulated in the temperature range from 300 to 20 K. In the MDm, it is observed that the bulk modulus varies linearly with temperature, while in the PDm an anomalous hardening is seen around 210 K. The bulk modulus of the PDm fluctuates strongly and is lower than that of the MDm. Neither the pair correlation function nor the Ti-Ti-O bonding angle indicate a true structural phase transition in this range of temperatures. Given the absence of any apparent change in the structure, a possible explanation for this phenomenon is the emergence of a certain class of dynamical instability associated with domain wall motion. Curiously, the pressure fluctuations in both the MDm and PDm configurations follow a power law distribution f ~ P(-α), with the exponent independent of applied strain and temperature. Time series for pressure are used to analyze the dynamics by time-delay reconstruction techniques. The calculus of embedding and correlation dimension indicates that in the polycrystalline configuration, low-dimension dynamics (<26) appears, which tend to disappear at higher temperatures.
