Hierarchical topological analysis of crystal structures: the skeletal net concept

Topological analysis of crystal structures faces the problem of the `correct' or the `best' assignment of bonds to atoms, which is often ambiguous. A hierarchical scheme is used where any crystal structure is described as a set of topological representations, each of which corresponds to a particular assignment of bonds encoded by a periodic net. In this set, two limiting nets are distinguished, complete and skeletal, which contain, respectively, all possible bonds and the minimal number of bonds required to keep the structure periodicity. Special attention is paid to the skeletal net since it describes the connectivity of a crystal structure in the simplest way, thus enabling one to find unobvious relations between crystalline substances of different composition and architecture. The tools for the automated hierarchical topological analysis have been implemented in the program package ToposPro. Examples, which illustrate the advantages of such analysis, are considered for a number of classes of crystalline substances: elements, intermetallics, ionic and coordination compounds, and molecular crystals. General provisions of the application of the skeletal net concept are also discussed.

A Review of the Melting Curves of Transition Metals at High Pressures Using Static Compression Techniques

The accurate determination of melting curves for transition metals is an intense topic within high pressure research, both because of the technical challenges included as well as the controversial data obtained from various experiments. This review presents the main static techniques that are used for melting studies, with a strong focus on the diamond anvil cell; it also explores the state of the art of melting detection methods and analyzes the major reasons for discrepancies in the determination of the melting curves of transition metals. The physics of the melting transition is also discussed.

Properties of Alkaline-Earth-Metal Polynitrogen Ternary Materials at High Pressure

We report the formation of cubic and tetragonal BaSrN3 at 100 GPa using an ab initio structure search method. Pressure ramping to 0 GPa reveals a reaction pressure threshold of 4.92 and 7.23 GPa for the cubic and tetragonal BaSrN3, respectively. The cubic phase is stabilized by coulombic interaction between the ions. Meanwhile, tetragonal BaSrN3 is stabilized through an expansion of the d-orbital in Ba and Sr atoms that is compensated by delocalization of π-electrons in N through reduction of π overlap. Elastic properties analysis suggests that both phases are mechanically stable. The structures also have high melting points as predicted using an empirical model, and all imaginary modes vanishes at about 2000 K. These results have significant implication for the design of cleaner and environmentally friendly high energy density materials.

High-pressure structures and phase transformations in elemental metals

At ambient conditions the great majority of the metallic elements have simple crystal structures, such as face-centred or body-centred cubic, or hexagonal close-packed. However, when subjected to very high pressures, many of the same elements undergo phase transitions to low-symmetry and surprisingly complex structures, an increasing number of which are being found to be incommensurate. The present critical review describes the high-pressure behaviour of each of the group 1 to 16 metallic elements in detail, summarising previous work and giving the best present understanding of the structures and transitions at ambient temperature. The principal results and emerging systematics are then summarised and discussed.
