Manipulation of the spin-orbit coupling using the Dirac equation for spin-dependent potentials

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy for adatoms and monolayers on non-magnetic substrates: where does it come from?

The substrate contribution to the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of supported nanostructures can be assessed by a site-selective manipulation of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and of the effective exchange field Bex. A systematic study of Co adatoms and Co monolayers on the (1 1 1) surfaces of Cu, Ag, Au, Pd and Pt is performed to study common trends in this class of materials. It is found that for adatoms, the influence of the substrate SOC and Bex is relatively small (10-30% of the MAE) while for monolayers, this influence can be substantial. The influence of the substrate SOC is much more important than the influence of the substrate Bex, except for highly polarizable substrates with a strong SOC (such as Pt). The substrate always promotes the tendency to an out-of-plane orientation of the easy magnetic axis for all the investigated systems.

Iron under pressure: "Kohn tweezers" and remnant magnetism

In this work we investigate the magnetic and structural properties of bulk Fe and Fe nanoparticles under pressure with x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies providing answers to two fundamental questions: (a) the chicken-or-egg problem for the magnetic and structural transitions and (b) magnetism in the high pressure hcp phase. The two transitions, inextricably linked in the bulk, are clearly decoupled in the nanoparticles, with the magnetic collapse preceding the structural transition. Ultrafast x-ray emission spectroscopy detects remnant magnetism, probably antiferromagnetic fluctuations, up to pressures of about 40 GPa in the hcp phase. This could be of direct relevance to the superconductivity in ϵ-Fe [K. Shimizu et al., Nature (London) 412, 316 (2001)] through the existence of a quantum critical point and associated magnetic fluctuations.

Electron correlation beyond the local density approximation: self-interaction correction in gadolinium

We report on detailed first-principles calculations which focus on the magnetic and structural properties of the (0001) surface of gadolinium. The electronic correlation within the localized 4f states is treated within the self-interaction correction (SIC), thus going beyond the local spin-density approximation. The ferromagnetic ground state is predicted correctly if the SIC is applied; the effect of surface relaxations on Heisenberg exchange parameters and on the Curie temperature are addressed by Monte Carlo calculations. The SIC also has a profound effect on the dispersion of the d surface states, due to hybridization of the 4f states with the 5d valence states. The best agreement with photoemission experiments is obtained within the transition state approximation, which takes into account the orbital relaxation. The Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the d surface states is fully captured by our relativistic multiple scattering approach.

Ab initio calculation of the intrinsic spin Hall effect in semiconductors

Relativistic band theoretical calculations reveal that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in hole-doped archetypical semiconductors Ge, GaAs, and AlAs is large [approximately 100(planck/e)(Omega cm)(-1)], showing the possibility of a spin Hall effect beyond the four-band Luttinger Hamiltonian. The calculated orbital-angular-momentum (orbital) Hall conductivity is one order of magnitude smaller, indicating no cancellation between the spin and orbital Hall effects in bulk semiconductors. Furthermore, it is found that the spin Hall effect can be strongly manipulated by strains, and that the ac spin Hall conductivity is large in pure as well as doped semiconductors.

Strongly enhanced orbital moments and anisotropies of adatoms on the Ag(001) surface

We present ab initio calculations for orbital moments and anisotropy energies of 3d and 5d adatoms on the Ag(001) surface, based on density functional theory, including Brooks' orbital polarization (OP) term, and applying a fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker-Green's function method. In general, we find unusually large orbital moments and anisotropy energies, e.g., in the 3d series, 2.57 mu(B) and +74 meV for Co, and, in the 5d series, 1.78 mu(B) and +42 meV for Os. These magnetic properties are determined mainly by the OP and even exist without spin-orbit coupling.
