Induced magnetization in thin epitaxial V films on Fe (100)

Observation of Magnetic State Dependent Thermoelectricity in Superconducting Spin Valves

Superconductor-ferromagnet tunnel junctions demonstrate giant thermoelectric effects that are being exploited to engineer ultrasensitive terahertz radiation detectors. Here, we experimentally observe the recently predicted complete magnetic control over thermoelectric effects in a superconducting spin valve, including the dependence of its sign on the magnetic state of the spin valve. The description of the experimental results is improved by the introduction of an interfacial domain wall in the spin filter layer interfacing the superconductor. Surprisingly, the application of high in-plane magnetic fields induces a double sign inversion of the thermoelectric effect, which exhibits large values even at applied fields twice the superconducting critical field.

High-precision measurement of magnetic penetration depth in superconducting films

The magnetic penetration depth (λ) in thin superconducting films is usually measured by the mutual inductance technique. The accuracy of this method has been limited by uncertainties in the geometry of the solenoids and in the film position and thickness, by parasitic coupling between the coils, etc. Here, we present several improvements in the apparatus and the method. To ensure the precise thickness of the superconducting layer, we engineer the films at atomic level using atomic-layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy. In this way, we also eliminate secondary-phase precipitates, grain boundaries, and pinholes that are common with other deposition methods and that artificially increase the field transmission and thus the apparent λ. For better reproducibility, the thermal stability of our closed-cycle cryocooler used to control the temperature of the mutual inductance measurement has been significantly improved by inserting a custom-built thermal conductivity damper. Next, to minimize the uncertainties in the geometry, we fused a pair of small yet precisely wound coils into a single sapphire block machined to a high precision. The sample is spring-loaded to exactly the same position with respect to the solenoids. Altogether, we can measure the absolute value of λ with the accuracy better than ±1%.

Magnetism at the V/Gd interface

Recent experimental investigations into the magnetic properties of V/Gd bilayers have shown that vanadium, which is nonmagnetic in the bulk, can acquire a magnetic moment in such systems. We have performed ab initio pseudopotential calculations to examine the magnetic behavior of V(110)/Gd(0001) bilayers for V layers with thicknesses up to 4 monolayers (ML). We considered both abrupt and atomic intermixed V/Gd interfaces. In both cases, the magnetic moment of the V layer is found to align antiparallel to the moment of the Gd layer, consistent with the experimental observation. However, the magnitude of the V moment at the abrupt interface is considerably smaller than the moments reported experimentally. In the presence of atomic intermixing, instead, substantially larger V moments are found, closer to the experimentally reported moments. On the basis of the calculated atomic and spin resolved density of states, we discuss the possible mechanism responsible for the observed Gd-V antiferromagnetic coupling.

Magnetically induced immiscibility in the Ising model of FeCr stainless steel

The iron-chromium alloy system has an unexplained anomaly: although there is a broad miscibility gap it appears to be favorable for chromium to dissolve in iron. This is consistent with ab initio calculation, but no simpler physically intuitive picture has been presented. Here it is shown that the Ising model, based on the bcc lattice with antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic species, has the potential to exhibit similar behavior, with a skew miscibility gap arising from the solubility of antiferromagnetic species on nonadjacent sites. Essential characteristics of stainless steel (high Cr solubility and surface segregation) are correctly reproduced. Under some conditions, magnetization increases with temperature. The equilibrium miscibility gap due to mixed magnetism and segregation-driven positive dM/dT are fundamental features of the bcc Ising model itself, not just FeCr.

Role of Nd/Ba disorder on the penetration depth of Nd(1+x)Ba(2-x)Cu(3)O(7-delta) thin films

We report on a study on the effect of Nd/Ba disorder on the ab-plane penetration depth of epitaxial Nd(1+x)Ba(2-x)Cu(3)O(7-delta) thin films. While in stoichiometric samples lambda(T) at low temperature is linear, Nd-rich films exhibit a quadratic law. For low Nd excess (x<0.04), a satisfying fit is obtained using the "dirty" d-wave model assuming that Nd ions at Ba sites act as strong scattering centers. At high x (x>0.15) the data are explained if Nd/Ba disorder becomes less effective as a source of scattering. The effect of localization has been discussed to account for the experimental results.
