Adiabatic dynamics of superconducting quantum point contacts

Josephson dynamics and Shapiro steps at high transmissions: current bias regime

We investigate Josephson dynamics of highly transparent superconducting nanojunctions at subgap voltages and temperatures. In this limit, intrinsic dissipation in such junctions turns out to be sub-Ohmic, which yields a linear dependence of the average voltage on the bias current I slightly exceeding the critical one Ic. We demonstrate a strong impact of intrinsic sub-Ohmic dissipation on integer Shapiro steps appearing on the I-V curve in the presence of external microwave radiation.

Landauer Formula for a Superconducting Quantum Point Contact

We generalize the Landauer formula to describe the dissipative electron transport through a superconducting point contact. The finite-temperature, linear-in-bias, dissipative dc conductance is expressed in terms of the phase- and energy-dependent scattering matrix of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles in the quantum point contact. The derived formula is also applicable to hybrid superconducting-normal structures and normal contacts, where it agrees with the known limits of Andreev reflection and normal-state conductance, respectively.

Dissipative currents in superfluid 3He weak links

We calculate the current-pressure relation for pinholes connecting two volumes of bulk superfluid 3He-B. The theory of multiple Andreev reflections, adapted from superconducting weak links, leads to a nonlinear dependence of the dc current on pressure bias. In arrays of pinholes one has to take into account oscillations of the texture at the Josephson frequency. The associated radiation of spin waves from the junction leads to an additional dissipative current at small biases, in agreement with measurements.

Supercurrent in atomic point contacts and andreev states

We have measured the supercurrent in aluminum atomic point contacts containing a small number of well characterized conduction channels. For most contacts, the measured supercurrent is adequately described by the opposite contributions of two thermally populated Andreev bound states per conduction channel. However, for contacts containing an almost perfectly transmitted channel 0.9</=tau</=1 the measured supercurrent is higher than expected, a fact that we attribute to nonadiabatic transitions between bound states.
