Quantum spin ladders at T=0 and at high temperatures studied by series expansions

Quantum spin correlations in an organometallic alternating-sign chain

High resolution neutron scattering is used to study excitations in the organometallic magnet (CH3)2NH2CuCl3 (DMACuCl3). Combined with bulk magnetization and susceptibility studies, the new results imply that DMACuCl3 is a realization of the S=1/2 alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (AFM-FM) chain. Coupled-cluster calculations indicate that the AFM and FM interactions have nearly the same strength, while analysis of scattering intensities shows evidence for interdimer spin correlations. Results are discussed in the context of recent ideas concerning quantum entanglement.

Diverging Heisenberg spin ladders: ground state and low energy excitations

We consider a two-leg ladder system with interactions varying from constant rung coupling to systematic diminishing of rung interactions leading to diverging chains. We compare and contrast their ground state and excitation characteristics using density matrix renormalization group methods. We find that the finite spin gap in a constant coupling ladder develops into a gapless excitation with slight diminishing of the distance dependent coupling. Varying the spatial range of the rung coupling, we derive the effective length scale of triplet excitations in these ladder classes of systems.

Spin dynamics of Sr14Cu24O41 two-leg ladder studied by Raman spectroscopy

The two-magnon (2M) excitation at 3000 cm(-1) in Sr14Cu24O41 two-leg ladder is studied by Raman scattering. A slight anisotropy of the superexchange coupling J(perpendicular)/J(parallel) approximately 0.8 with J(parallel) = 110+/-20 meV is proposed from the analysis of the magnetic scattering. The resonant coupling across the charge transfer gap increases the 2M intensity by orders of magnitude. The anisotropy of Raman scattering is dependent upon the excitation energy. The 2M relaxation is found to be correlated with the temperature dependent electronic Raman continuum at low frequencies.

Strong-coupling expansions for multiparticle excitations: continuum and bound states

We present a new linked cluster expansion for calculating properties of multiparticle excitation spectra to high orders. We use it to obtain the two-particle spectra for systems of coupled spin-half dimers. We find that even for weakly coupled dimers the spectrum is very rich, consisting of many bound states. The number of bound states depends on both geometry of coupling and frustration. Many of the bound states can only be seen by going to sufficiently high orders in the perturbation theory, showing the extended character of the pair attraction.
