Structure and Electronic State in a Fluid Alkali Metal: Synchrotron Radiation Studies

Structure and electronic state in a fluid alkali metal have been investigated by using synchrotron radiation. X-ray diffraction and small angle X-ray scattering measurements of fluid rubidium (Rb) were carried out for observing local and intermediate atomic arrangements, and X-ray Compton scattering measurements were carried out for observing electronic state in the fluids. Variation in physical quantities obtained by these measurements has revealed a particular density range of the fluid, where the stability problem of the electron gas becomes an issue.

Finite Temperature Green's Function Approach for Excited State and Thermodynamic Properties of Cool to Warm Dense Matter

We present a finite-temperature extension of the retarded cumulant Green's function for calculations of exited-state, correlation, and thermodynamic properties of electronic systems. The method incorporates a cumulant to leading order in the screened Coulomb interaction W, and improves on the GW approximation of many-body perturbation theory. Results for the homogeneous electron gas are presented for a wide range of densities and temperatures, from cool to warm dense matter regimes, which reveal several hitherto unexpected properties. For example, correlation effects remain strong at high T while the exchange-correlation energy becomes small; also the spectral function broadens and damping increases with temperature, blurring the usual quasiparticle picture. These effects are evident, e.g., in Compton scattering which exhibits many-body corrections that persist at normal densities and intermediate T. The approach also yields exchange-correlation energies and potentials in good agreement with existing methods.

Special directions in momentum space. III. Practical applications

This paper complements two previous papers devoted toSpecial directions in momentum space. I. CubicandII. Hexagonal, tetragonal and trigonal symmetries[Kontrym-Sznajd & Samsel-Czekala (2011).J. Appl. Cryst.44, 1246–1254; Kontrym-Sznajd & Samsel-Czekala (2012).J. Appl. Cryst.45, 1254–1260], in which sets of special directions (SDs) were proposed. Such directions, employing the full symmetry of the Brillouin zone, allow for constructing in the whole space anisotropic quantities from their known values along a few directions. SDs also define which spectra, measured in, for example, Compton scattering experiments, are the most efficient for reconstructing three-dimensional densities from their one-dimensional projections. This paper, in which new sets of special directions (SDs) for cubic structures are proposed, is devoted mainly to practical applications of SDs. Taking into account experimental uncertainty, an optimal strategy for experimental investigations is discussed.

Special directions in momentum space. II. Hexagonal, tetragonal and trigonal symmetries

This paper is a continuation of a previous one,Special directions in momentum space. I. Cubic symmetries[Kontrym-Sznajd & Samsel-Czekała (2011).J. Appl. Cryst.44, 1246–1254], where new sets of special directions (SDs), having the full symmetry of the Brillouin zone, were proposed for cubic lattices. In the present paper, such directions are derived for structures with unique six-, four- and threefold axes,i.e.hexagonal, tetragonal and trigonal lattices, for both two- and three-dimensional space. The SDs presented here allow for construction, in the whole space, of anisotropic quantities from the knowledge of such quantities along a limited number of SDs. The task at hand is to determine as many anisotropic components as the number of available sampling directions. Also discussed is a way of dealing with data when the number of anisotropic components is restricted by a non-optimal set of SDs.

Momentum distribution and renormalization factor in sodium and the electron gas

We present experimental and theoretical results on the momentum distribution and the quasiparticle renormalization factor in sodium. From an x-ray Compton-profile measurement of the valence-electron-momentum density, we derive its discontinuity at the Fermi wave vector. This yields an accurate measure of the renormalization factor that we compare with quantum Monte Carlo and G0W0 calculations performed both on crystalline sodium and on the homogeneous electron gas.

Anomalous electronic correlations in the ground state momentum density of Al(97)Li(3)

We report high resolution Compton scattering measurements on an Al(97)Li(3) disordered alloy single crystal for momentum transfer along the [100], [110], and [111] symmetry directions. The results are interpreted via corresponding Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation first-principles computations. By comparing spectra for Al(97)Li(3) and Al, we show that the momentum density in the alloy differs significantly from the predictions of the conventional Fermi-liquid picture and that the ground state of Al is modified anomalously by the addition of Li.

High accuracy ab initio studies of Li6+, Li6−, and three isomers of Li6

The structures and energetics of Li(6) (+), Li(6) (-) and three isomers of Li(6) are investigated using the coupled-cluster singles, doubles and perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] method with valence and core-valence correlation consistent basis sets of double- to quadruple-zeta quality (cc-pVXZ and cc-pCVXZ, where X=D-Q). These results are compared with qualitatively different predictions by less reliable methods. Our results conclusively show that the D(4h) isomer is the global minimum structure for Li(6). It is energetically favored over the C(5v) and D(3h) structures by about 5.1 and 7.1 kcal mol(-1), respectively, after the inclusion of the zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE) correction. Our most accurate total atomization energies are 123.2, 117.6, and 115.7 kcal mol(-1) for the D(4h), C(5v), and D(3h) isomers, respectively. Comparison of experimental optical absorption spectra with our computed electronic spectra also indicate that the D(4h) isomer is indeed the most stable structure. The cation, anion, and some higher spin states are investigated using the less expensive cc-pCVDZ basis set. Adiabatic ionization energies and electron affinities are reported and compared with experimental values. Predictions of molecular properties are found to be sensitive to the basis set used and to the treatment of electron correlation.
