RKKY interaction and Kondo screening cloud for strongly correlated electrons

Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in one-dimensional gapped helical states

We investigate theoretically indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities mediated by one-dimensional gapped helical states. Such states, containing massive Dirac fermions, may be realized on the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator when time-reversal symmetry is weakly broken. We find that the indirect exchange interaction consists of Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, in-plane and out-of-plane Ising terms. These terms decay exponentially when the Fermi level lies inside the bandgap whereas the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term has smallest amplitude. Outside the bandgap, the massive helical states modify oscillatory behaviors of the range functions so that the period of oscillations decreases near the edge of band in terms of energy gap or Fermi energy. In addition, the out-of-plane Ising term vanishes in the case of zero-gap structure. Also, the oscillation amplitude of out-of-plane Ising term increases versus energy gap but it decreases as a function of Fermi energy. While the oscillation amplitudes of other components remain constant as functions of energy gap and Fermi energy. Analytical results are also obtained for subgap and over gap regimes. Furthermore, the effects of electron-electron interactions are analyzed.

Kondo Impurities Coupled to a Helical Luttinger Liquid: RKKY-Kondo Physics Revisited

We show that the paradigmatic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) description of two local magnetic moments coupled to propagating electrons breaks down in helical Luttinger liquids when the electron interaction is stronger than some critical value. In this novel regime, the Kondo effect overwhelms the RKKY interaction over all macroscopic interimpurity distances. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the helicity (realized, for instance, at edges of a time-reversal invariant topological insulator) and does not take place in usual (nonhelical) Luttinger liquids.

Controllable magnetic correlation between two impurities by spin-orbit coupling in graphene

Two magnetic impurities on the edge of a zigzag graphene nanoribbon strongly interact with each other via indirect coupling, which can be mediated by conducting carriers. By means of Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we find that the spin-orbit coupling λ and the chemical potential μ in system can be used to drive the transition of local-spin exchange from ferromagnetism to anti-ferromagnetism. Since the tunable ranges for λ and μ in graphene are experimentally reachable, we thus open the possibilities for its device application. The symmetry in spatial distribution is broken by the vertical and the transversal spin-spin correlations due to the effect of spin-orbit coupling, leading to the spatial anisotropy of spin exchange, which distinguish our findings from the case in normal Fermi liquid.

RKKY interaction and intrinsic frustration in non-Fermi-liquid metals

We study the RKKY interaction in non-Fermi-liquid metals. We find that the RKKY interaction mediated by some non-Fermi-liquid metals can be of much longer range than for a Fermi liquid. The oscillatory nature of the RKKY interaction thus becomes more important in such non-Fermi liquids, and gives rise to enhanced frustration when the spins form a lattice. Frustration suppresses the magnetic ordering temperature of the lattice spin system. Furthermore, we find that the spin system with a longer range RKKY interaction can be described by the Brazovskii model, where the ordering wave vector lies on a higher dimensional manifold. Strong fluctuations in such a model lead to a first-order phase transition and/or glassy phase. This may explain some recent experiments where glassy behavior was observed in stoichiometric heavy fermion material close to a ferromagnetic quantum critical point.

Nuclear magnetism and electronic order in 13C nanotubes

Single wall carbon nanotubes grown entirely from 13C form an ideal system to study the effect of electron interaction on nuclear magnetism in one dimension. If the electrons are in the metallic, Luttinger liquid regime, we show that even a very weak hyperfine coupling to the 13C nuclear spins has a striking effect: The system is driven into an ordered phase, which combines electron and nuclear degrees of freedom, and which persists up into the millikelvin range. In this phase the conductance is reduced by a universal factor of 2, allowing for detection by standard transport experiments.
