Gradient-corrected ab initio calculations of spin-spiral states in fcc-Fe and the effects of the atomic-spheres approximation

Electric-field-induced spin spiral state in bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbons

We investigated the emergence of spin spiral ground state induced by the electric field in the bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbons for the ferromagnetic edge states. To do that, we employed the generalized Bloch theorem to create flat spiral alignments for all the magnetic moments of carbon atoms at the edges within a constraint scheme approach. While the small ribbon width can preserve the ferromagnetic ground state, the large one shows the spiral ground state starting from a certain value of the electric field. We also pointed out that the spiral ground state is caused by the reduction of spin stiffness. In this case, the energy scale exhibits a subtle nature that can only be considered at the low temperature. For the last discussion, we also revealed that the spin spiral ground state appears more rapidly when the thickness increases. Therefore, we justify that the large ribbon width and large thickness can generate many spiral states induced by the electric field.

Structure and magnetism of bulk Fe and Cr: from plane waves to LCAO methods

Magnetic, structural and energetic properties of bulk Fe and Cr were studied using first-principles calculations within density functional theory (DFT). We aimed to identify the dependence of these properties on key approximations of DFT, namely the exchange-correlation functional, the pseudopotential and the basis set. We found a smaller effect of pseudopotentials (PPs) on Fe than on Cr. For instance, the local magnetism of Cr was shown to be particularly sensitive to the potentials representing the core electrons, i.e. projector augmented wave and Vanderbilt ultrasoft PPs predict similar results, whereas standard norm-conserving PPs tend to overestimate the local magnetic moments of Cr in bcc Cr and in dilute bcc FeCr alloys. This drawback is suggested to be closely correlated to the overestimation of Cr solution energy in the latter system. On the other hand, we point out that DFT methods with very reduced localized basis sets (LCAO: linear combination of atomic orbitals) give satisfactory results compared with more robust plane-wave approaches. A minimal-basis representation of '3d' electrons comes to be sufficient to describe non-trivial magnetic phases including spin spirals in both fcc Fe and bcc Cr, as well as the experimental magnetic ground state of bcc Cr showing a spin density wave (SDW) state. In addition, a magnetic 'spd' tight binding model within the Stoner formalism was proposed and validated for Fe and Cr. The respective Stoner parameters were obtained by fitting to DFT data. This efficient semiempirical approach was shown to be accurate enough for studying various collinear and non-collinear phases of bulk Fe and Cr. It also enabled a detailed investigation of different polarization states of SDW in bcc Cr, where the longitudinal state was suggested to be the ground state, consistent with existing experimental data.

Out-of-plane nesting driven spin spiral in ultrathin Fe/Cu(001) films

Epitaxial ultrathin Fe films on fcc Cu(001) exhibit a spin spiral (SS), in contrast to the ferromagnetism of bulk bcc Fe. We study the in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OP) Fermi surfaces (FSs) of the SS in 8 monolayer Fe/Cu(001) films using energy-dependent soft-x-ray momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the SS originates in nested regions confined to OP FSs, which are drastically modified compared to IP FSs. From precise reciprocal-space maps in successive zones, we obtain the associated real space compressive strain of 1.5+/-0.5% along c axis. An autocorrelation analysis quantifies the incommensurate ordering vector q=(2pi/a)(0,0, approximately 0.86), favoring a SS and consistent with magneto-optic Kerr effect experiments. The results reveal the importance of IP and OP FS mapping for ultrathin films.

Hyperfine and magnetic properties of Fe-Cu clusters and Fe precipitates embedded in a Cu matrix

Using the first-principles real-space linear muffin-tin orbital method within the atomic sphere approximation (RS-LMTO-ASA) we study hyperfine and local magnetic properties of substituted pure Fe and Fe-Cu clusters in an fcc Cu matrix. Spin and orbital contributions to magnetic moments, hyperfine fields and the Mössbauer isomer shifts at the Fe sites in Fe precipitates and Fe-Cu alloy clusters of sizes up to 60 Fe atoms embedded in the Cu matrix are calculated and the influence of the local environment on these properties is discussed.

First-principle study of materials involved in incommensurate transitions

We discuss the applicability of the density functional theory to the study of incommensurate crystals. After a brief introduction to these aperiodic but ordered materials we present several types of ab initio methodologies that are adequate in the context of incommensurate transitions and phases. We also give a survey of the corresponding applications, while providing two case studies: Pb2MgTeO6 and K2SeO4.

Spin-density wave in ultrathin Fe films on Cu(100)

For Fe films epitaxially grown on Cu(100) at 300 K, the total magnetic moment as a function of film thickness and its temperature dependence have been investigated in situ with a multitechnique approach. The results exclude the collinear type-1 antiferromagnetic configuration as the magnetic structure for face-centered-cubic Fe films on Cu(100). It is proposed that a spin-density-wave state is responsible for the magnetic structure.
