Absence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7- delta films

In-Plane Anisotropy of Electrical Transport in Y0.85Tb0.15Ba2Cu3O7-x Films

We fabricated high-quality c-axis-oriented epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-x films with 15% of the yttrium atoms replaced by terbium (YTBCO) and studied their electrical properties. The Tb substitution reduced the charge carrier density, resulting in increased resistivity and decreased critical current density compared to pure YBa2Cu3O7-x films. The electrical properties of the YTBCO films showed an in-plane anisotropy in both the superconducting and normal states that, together with the XRD data, provided evidence for, at least, a partially twin-free film. Unexpectedly, the resistive transition of the bridges also demonstrated the in-plane anisotropy that could be explained within the framework of Tinkham's model of resistive transition and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) model, depending on the sample parameters. Measurements of the differential resistance in the temperature range of the resistive transition confirmed the occurrence of the BKT transition in the YTBCO bridges. Therefore, we consider the YTBCO films to be a promising platform for both the fabrication of devices with high kinetic inductance and fundamental research on the BKT transition in cuprate superconductors.

Approaching Two-Dimensional Superconductivity in Ultrathin DyBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}

The temperature dependence of the superfluid density ρ_{s}(T) has been measured for a series of ultrathin MBE-grown DyBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} superconducting (SC) films by submillimeter wave interferometry combined with time-domain terahertz spectroscopy and IR ellipsometry. We find that all films 10 u.c. and thicker show the same universal temperature dependence of ρ_{s}(T), which follows the critical behavior characteristic of single crystal YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} as T approaches T_{c}. In 7 u.c. thick films, ρ_{s}(T) declines steeply upon approaching T_{c}, as expected for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless vortex unbinding transition. Our analysis provides evidence for a sharply defined 4 u.c. non-SC interfacial layer, leaving a quasi-2D SC layer on top. We propose that the SC state in this interfacial layer is suppressed by competing (possibly charge) order.

Kosterlitz-Thouless physics: a review of key issues

This article reviews, from a very personal point of view, the origins and the early work on transitions driven by topological defects such as vortices in the two dimensional planar rotor model and in (4)Helium films and dislocations and disclinations in 2D crystals. I cover the early papers with David Thouless and describe the important insights but also the errors and oversights since corrected by other workers. I then describe some of the experimental verifications of the theory and some numerical simulations. Finally applications to superconducting arrays of Josephson junctions and to recent cold atom experiments are described.

Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition in a charge ordered state of the layered organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3

The current-voltage characteristics in the charge order state of the two-dimensional organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)(2)I(3) exhibit power law behavior at low temperatures. The power law is understood in terms of the electric-field-dependent potential between electrons and holes, which are thermally excited from the charge order state. The power law exponent steeply changes from 1 to 3 in the range from 30 to 45 K with decreasing temperature, thereby suggesting the occurrence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition; many (few) unbound electron-hole pairs are thermally excited above (below) the transition. The effects of the finite size and interlayer coupling on the power law behavior are discussed.

Size effects in the nonlinear resistance and flux creep in a virtual Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless state of superconducting films

We show that the size effects radically affect the electric-field-current (E-I) relation of superconducting films. We calculate E(J) due to thermally activated hopping of single vortices driven by a current I across the film in a magnetic field H, taking into account the interaction of free vortices with their antivortex images and peaks in the Meissner currents at the film edges. The unbinding of the virtual vortex-antivortex pairs not only mimics the transport uniform Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior, it can also dominate the observed E(J) and result in the field-dependent Ohmic resistance at small I. We show that E(I) can be tuned by changing the film geometry and propose experimental tests of this theory.

Anomalous finite-size effect in superconducting Josephson junction arrays

We show that a previously reported discrepancy between simulations of superconducting Josephson junction arrays and the theoretical analysis of Ambegaokar, Halperin, Nelson, and Siggia (AHNS) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 783 (1978)] is rooted in a peculiar finite-size effect under periodic boundary conditions. Our simulation results for the largest array support the power-law I-V curves predicted by AHNS. Analysis of the vortex dynamics reveals two intrinsic length scales set by the applied current, which define three size regimes with distinctive I-V characteristics.

Do superconductors have zero resistance in a magnetic field?

We show that dc voltage versus current measurements of a YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) film in a magnetic field can be collapsed onto scaling functions proposed by Fisher et al. [Phys. Rev. B 43, 130 (1991)] as is widely reported in the literature. We find, however, that good data collapse is achieved for a wide range of critical exponents and temperatures. These results strongly suggest that agreement with scaling alone does not prove the existence of a phase transition. We propose a criterion to determine if the data collapse is valid, and thus if a phase transition occurs. To our knowledge, none of the data reported in the literature meet our criterion.
