Diffusive lensing as a mechanism of intracellular transport and compartmentalization

While inhomogeneous diffusivity has been identified as a ubiquitous feature of the cellular interior, its implications for particle mobility and concentration at different length scales remain largely unexplored. In this work, we use agent-based simulations of diffusion to investigate how heterogeneous diffusivity affects the movement and concentration of diffusing particles. We propose that a nonequilibrium mode of membrane-less compartmentalization arising from the convergence of diffusive trajectories into low-diffusive sinks, which we call 'diffusive lensing,' is relevant for living systems. Our work highlights the phenomenon of diffusive lensing as a potentially key driver of mesoscale dynamics in the cytoplasm, with possible far-reaching implications for biochemical processes.

Phase separation of passive particles in active liquids

The transport properties of colloidal particles in active liquids have been studied extensively. It has led to a deeper understanding of the interactions between passive and active particles. However, the phase behavior of colloidal particles in active media has received little attention. Here, we present a combined experimental and numerical investigation of passive colloids dispersed in suspensions of active particles. Our study reveals dynamic clustering of colloids in active media due to an interplay of activity and attractive effective potential between the colloids. The strength of the effective potential is set by the size ratio of passive particles to the active ones. As the relative size of the passive particles increases, the effective potential becomes stronger and the average size of the clusters grows. The simulations reveal a macroscopic phase separation at sufficiently large size ratios. We will discuss the effect of density fluctuations of active particles on the nature of effective interactions between passive ones.

Unjamming and emergent nonreciprocity in active ploughing through a compressible viscoelastic fluid

A dilute suspension of active Brownian particles in a dense compressible viscoelastic fluid, forms a natural setting to study the emergence of nonreciprocity during a dynamical phase transition. At these densities, the transport of active particles is strongly influenced by the passive medium and shows a dynamical jamming transition as a function of activity and medium density. In the process, the compressible medium is actively churned up - for low activity, the active particle gets self-trapped in a cavity of its own making, while for large activity, the active particle ploughs through the medium, either accompanied by a moving anisotropic wake, or leaving a porous trail. A hydrodynamic approach makes it evident that the active particle generates a long-range density wake which breaks fore-aft symmetry, consistent with the simulations. Accounting for the back-reaction of the compressible medium leads to (i) dynamical jamming of the active particle, and (ii) a dynamical non-reciprocal attraction between two active particles moving along the same direction, with the trailing particle catching up with the leading one in finite time. We emphasize that these nonreciprocal effects appear only when the active particles are moving and so manifest in the vicinity of the jamming-unjamming transition.

Optimizing energetic cost of uncertainty in a driven system with and without feedback

Many biological functions require dynamics to be necessarily driven out of equilibrium. In contrast, in various contexts, a nonequilibrium dynamics at fast timescales can be described by an effective equilibrium dynamics at a slower timescale. In this work, we study two different aspects: (i) the energy-efficiency tradeoff for a specific nonequilibrium linear dynamics of two variables with feedback and (ii) the cost of effective parameters in a coarse-grained theory as given by the "hidden" dissipation and entropy production rate in the effective equilibrium limit of the dynamics. To meaningfully discuss the tradeoff between energy consumption and the efficiency of the desired function, a one-to-one mapping between function(s) and energy input is required. The function considered in this work is the variance of one of the variables. We get a one-to-one mapping by considering the minimum variance obtained for a fixed entropy production rate and vice versa. We find that this minimum achievable variance is a monotonically decreasing function of the given entropy production rate. When there is a timescale separation, in the effective equilibrium limit, the cost of the effective potential and temperature is the associated "hidden" entropy production rate.
