Coupled Möbius maps as a tool to model Kuramoto phase synchronization

On non-trivial hyperbolic sets and their bifurcations in families of diffeomorphisms of a two-dimensional torus

We propose a simple model-two-parameter family of diffeomorphisms of a two-dimensional torus. Combining analytical and numerical methods, we find regions in the parameter plane such that each diffeomorphism of the family is hyperbolic and describe the structure of the corresponding hyperbolic sets. We also study bifurcations on the boundaries of these regions, which lead to the change of hyperbolicity type (from Anosov diffeomorphisms to DA-diffeomorphisms).

Temporal analog of Bragg gratings

Recently, scalar coupled-wave theory has been employed to analyze a medium with periodic time-varying permittivity, providing simple expressions and, consequently, straightforward insights into the parametric amplification mechanism. Here, we combine such an approach with the Möbius transformation method to investigate the dispersion and optical response of a finite "time-slab" of the aforementioned medium. We demonstrate the temporal analog of a Bragg grating, discuss the differences with its spatial counterpart, and examine nontrivial scenarios of the permittivity's time-modulation, such as chirping and apodization. Furthermore, we propose a highly selective and, moreover, single-spatial-interface optical sensor, based on phase delineation.

Exponentially Long Transient Time to Synchronization of Coupled Chaotic Circle Maps in Dense Random Networks

We study the transition to synchronization in large, dense networks of chaotic circle maps, where an exact solution of the mean-field dynamics in the infinite network and all-to-all coupling limit is known. In dense networks of finite size and link probability of smaller than one, the incoherent state is meta-stable for coupling strengths that are larger than the mean-field critical coupling. We observe chaotic transients with exponentially distributed escape times and study the scaling behavior of the mean time to synchronization.

Attractor-repeller collision and the heterodimensional dynamics

We study the heterodimensional dynamics in a simple map on a three-dimensional torus. This map consists of a two-dimensional driving Anosov map and a one-dimensional driven Möbius map, and demonstrates the collision of a chaotic attractor with a chaotic repeller if parameters are varied. We explore this collision by following tangent bifurcations of the periodic orbits and establish a regime where periodic orbits with different numbers of unstable directions coexist in a chaotic set. For this situation, we construct a heterodimensional cycle connecting these periodic orbits. Furthermore, we discuss properties of the rotation number and of the nontrivial Lyapunov exponent at the collision and in the heterodimensional regime.

Travelling chimeras in oscillator lattices with advective-diffusive coupling

We consider a one-dimensional array of phase oscillators coupled via an auxiliary complex field. While in the seminal chimera studies by Kumamoto and Battogtokh only diffusion of the field was considered, we include advection which makes the coupling left-right asymmetric. Chimera starts to move and we demonstrate that a weakly turbulent moving pattern appears. It possesses a relatively large synchronous domain where the phases are nearly equal, and a more disordered domain where the local driving field is small. For a dense system with a large number of oscillators, there are strong local correlations in the disordered domain, which at most places looks like a smooth phase profile. We find also exact regular travelling wave chimera-like solutions of different complexity, but only some of them are stable. Mutual singularities of overlapping attractor and repeller

We apply the concepts of relative dimensions and mutual singularities to characterize the fractal properties of overlapping attractor and repeller in chaotic dynamical systems. We consider one analytically solvable example (a generalized baker's map); two other examples, the Anosov-Möbius and the Chirikov-Möbius maps, which possess fractal attractor and repeller on a two-dimensional torus, are explored numerically. We demonstrate that although for these maps the stable and unstable directions are not orthogonal to each other, the relative Rényi and Kullback-Leibler dimensions as well as the mutual singularity spectra for the attractor and repeller can be well approximated under orthogonality assumption of two fractals.
