Buckling of a linear chain of hard spheres in a harmonic confining potential: Numerical and analytical results for low and high compression

Flexural rigidity of pressurized model notochords in regular packing patterns

The biomechanics of embryonic notochords are studied using an elastic membrane model. An initial study varying internal pressure and stiffness ratio determines tension and geometric ratios as a function of internal pressure, membrane stiffness ratio, and cell packing pattern. A subsequent three-point bending study determines flexural rigidity as a function of internal pressure, configuration, and orientation. Flexural rigidity is found to be independent of membrane stiffness ratio. Controlling for number and volume of cells and their internal pressure, the eccentric staircase pattern of cell packing has more than double the flexural rigidity of the radially symmetric bamboo pattern. Moreover, the eccentric staircase pattern is found to be more than twice as stiff in lateral bending than in dorsoventral bending. This suggests a mechanical advantage to the eccentric WT staircase pattern of the embryonic notochord, over patterns with round cross-section.

A continuum description of the buckling of a line of spheres in a transverse harmonic confining potential

A line of contacting hard spheres, placed in a transverse confining potential, buckles under compression or when tilted away from the horizontal, once a critical tilt angle is exceeded. This interesting nonlinear problem is enriched by the combined application of both compression and tilt. In a continuous formulation, the profile of transverse sphere displacement is well described by numerical solutions of a second-order differential equation (provided that buckling is not of large amplitude). Here we provide a detailed discussion of these solutions, which are approximated by analytic expressions in terms of Jacobi, Whittaker and Airy functions. The analysis in terms of Whittaker functions yields an exact result for the critical tilt for buckling without compression.

The Effect of Particle Necks on the Mechanical Properties of Aerogels

Mechanical properties of open-porous materials are often described by constructing a cellular network with beams of constant cross sections as the struts of the cells. Such models have been applied to describe, for example, thermal and mechanical properties of aerogels. However, in many aerogels, the pore walls or the skeletal network is better described as a pearl-necklace, in which the particles making up the network appear as a string of pearls. In this paper, we investigate the effect of neck sizes on the mechanical properties of such pore walls. We present an analytical and a numerical solution by modeling these walls as corrugated beams and study the subsequent deviations from the classical scaling theory. Additionally, a full numerical model of such pearl-necklace-like walls with concave necks of varying sizes are simulated. The results of the numerical model are shown to be in good agreement with those resulting from the computational one.
