Simulation of collapsing cavitation bubbles in various liquids by lattice Boltzmann model coupled with the Redlich-Kwong-Soave equation of state

Analysis of Microbubble-Blood cell system Oscillation/Cavitation influenced by ultrasound Forces: Conjugate applications of FEM and LBM

Sonoporation is a non-invasive method that uses ultrasound for drug and gene delivery for therapeutic purposes. Here, both Finite Element Method (FEM) and Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) are applied to study the interaction physics of microbubble oscillation and collapse near flexible tissue. After validating the Finite Element Method with the nonlinear excited lipid-coated microbubble as well as the Lattice Boltzmann Method with experimental results, we have studied the behavior of a three-dimensional compressible microbubble in the vicinity of tissue. In the FEM phase, the oscillation microbubble with a lipid shell interacts with the boundary. The range of pressure and ultrasound frequency have been considered in the field of therapeutic applications of sonoporation. The viscoelastic and interfacial tension as the coating properties of the microbubble shell have been investigated. The presence of an elastic boundary increases the resonance frequency of the microbubble compared to that of a free microbubble. The increase in pressure leads to an expansion in the range of the microbubble's motion, the velocity induced in the fluid, and the shear stress on the boundary walls of tissue. An enhancement in the surface tension of the microbubble can influence fluid flow and reduce the shear stress on the boundary. The multi-pseudo-potential interaction LBM is used to reduce thermodynamic inconsistency and high-density ratio in a two-phase system for modeling the cavitation process. The three-dimensional shape of the microbubble during the collapse stages and the counter of pressure are displayed. There is a time difference between the occurrence of maximum velocity and pressure. All results in detail are presented in the article bodies.

Investigations on the shock wave induced by collapse of a toroidal bubble

When bubbles collapse near a wall, they typically experience an asymmetric deformation. This collapse leads to the creation of a jet that strikes the bubble interface, causing the formation of a toroidal bubble and the subsequent release of a water-hammer shock. In this study, we present a systematic analysis of the collapse of a toroidal bubble in an open field or adjacent to a flat wall using high-fidelity numerical simulation. To maintain the sharpness of the interface, we employ the interface compression technique and the boundary variation diminishing approach within the two-phase model. Our findings demonstrate that shock waves emitted from the toroidal bubble consistently propagate toward the central axis of the torus, resulting in significant pressure shocks along the axis, similar to the water-hammer shock formed during the collapse of a spherical bubble. In contrast, weak pressure waves are generated in the transverse directions, leading to relatively weaker pressure peaks. Furthermore, the wall-pressure peak induced by the toroidal bubble is approximately three times higher than that induced by the spherical bubble. Based on the directional characteristics of pressure wave propagation from collapsing toroidal bubbles, toroidal-shaped pressure vessels can be designed as buoyancy materials for deep submersibles. This design enables the focused release of energy in a specific direction, effectively minimizing the destructive chain reaction caused by the implosion.

Evaluation of the non-Newtonian lattice Boltzmann model coupled with off-grid bounce-back scheme: Wall shear stress distributions in Ostwald-de Waele fluids flow

We present a comprehensive analysis of the non-Newtonian lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) when it is used to simulate the distribution of wall shear stress (WSS). We systematically identify sources of numerical errors associated with non-Newtonian rheological behavior of fluids in off-grid geometries. We implement the single relaxation time, Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK), and multiple relaxation time (MRT) collision operators and investigate flow in a two-dimensional channel aligned with lattice directions and off-grid Hagen-Poiseuille flow of Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) fluids. As for boundary conditions, we implement constant body force-driven and pressure-driven flows. These two boundary conditions have different numerical challenges, which include numerical stability, accuracy, mass conservation, and compressibility effects, which are inherent in the LBM method. Our results indicate that MRT, when the relaxation times are adequately tuned in the non-Newtonian case, significantly improves the WSS distribution accuracy and the numerical stability of the LBM. MRT also enhances the stability and accuracy for non-Newtonian fluids compared with the Newtonian case, meaning that it is questionable if a BGK collision operator is appropriate to use in a non-Newtonian case with off-grid boundaries. When analyzing the non-Newtonian LBM in the context of staircase walls and interpolated bounce-back (IBB) walls, a MRT collision operator with the appropriate choice of tunable relaxation times makes it possible to achieve numerically accurate results without a significant increase in grid resolution for matching to the analytical solution of WSS distributions. In analyzing the non-Newtonian flows, we show that the viscosity dependency of bounce-back walls in the BGK-LBM deviates from the results obtained under Newtonian assumptions. The power-law index further influences these discrepancies, and errors caused by the viscosity dependency of the bounce-back boundary conditions can be effectively mitigated by implementing the MRT procedure. Results show that non-Newtonian fluids, in contrast with the Newtonian assumption, encounter a greater mass imbalance when flowing through a periodic system with IBB walls. MRT can address this challenge, as it allows for independent adjustments of physical relaxation times and enhances mass conservation in the case of non-Newtonian fluids. In pressure-driven non-Newtonian flows, there is a significant impact of bulk viscosity. This aspect is often overlooked in Newtonian simulations but can significantly impact fluid adapting to rapid changes in local effective viscosity. One of our main conclusions is that the MRT collision operator with tuned relaxation times can effectively resolve numerical problems caused by non-Newtonian rheological properties and off-grid geometries. We also provide practical guidelines for selecting the most suitable simulation approach.

Effects of Shot Peening and Cavitation Peening on Properties of Surface Layer of Metallic Materials-A Short Review

Shot peening is a dynamically developing surface treatment used to improve the surface properties modified by tool, impact, microblasting, or shot action. This paper reviews the basic information regarding shot peening methods. The peening processes and effects of the shot peening and cavitation peening treatments on the surface layer properties of metallic components are analysed. Moreover, the effects of peening on the operational performance of metallic materials are summarized. Shot peening is generally applied to reduce the surface roughness, increase the hardness, and densify the surface layer microstructure, which leads to work hardening effects. In addition, the residual compressive stresses introduced into the material have a beneficial effect on the performance of the surface layer. Therefore, peening can be beneficial for metallic structures prone to fatigue, corrosion, and wear. Recently, cavitation peening has been increasingly developed. This review paper suggests that most research on cavitation peening omits the treatment of additively manufactured metallic materials. Furthermore, no published studies combine shot peening and cavitation peening in one hybrid process, which could synthesize the benefits of both peening processes. Moreover, there is a need to investigate the effects of peening, especially cavitation peening and hybrid peening, on the anti-wear and corrosion performance of additively manufactured metallic materials. Therefore, the literature gap leading to the scope of future work is also included.
