Position distribution in a generalized run-and-tumble process

Active particle in one dimension subjected to resetting with memory

The study of diffusion with preferential returns to places visited in the past has attracted increased attention in recent years. In these highly non-Markov processes, a standard diffusive particle intermittently resets at a given rate to previously visited positions. At each reset, a position to be revisited is randomly chosen with a probability proportional to the accumulated amount of time spent by the particle at that position. These preferential revisits typically generate a very slow diffusion, logarithmic in time, but still with a Gaussian position distribution at late times. Here we consider an active version of this model, where between resets the particle is self-propelled with constant speed and switches direction in one dimension according to a telegraphic noise. Hence there are two sources of non-Markovianity in the problem. We exactly derive the position distribution in Fourier space, as well as the variance of the position at all times. The crossover from the short-time ballistic regime, dominated by activity, to the long-time anomalous logarithmic growth induced by memory is studied. We also analytically derive a large deviation principle for the position, which exhibits a logarithmic time scaling instead of the usual algebraic form. Interestingly, at large distances, the large deviations become independent of time and match the nonequilibrium steady state of a particle under resetting to its starting position only.

Large deviations in statistics of the convex hull of passive and active particles: A theoretical study

We investigate analytically the distribution tails of the area A and perimeter L of a convex hull for different types of planar random walks. For N noninteracting Brownian motions of duration T we find that the large-L and -A tails behave as P(L)∼e^{-b_{N}L^{2}/DT} and P(A)∼e^{-c_{N}A/DT}, while the small-L and -A tails behave as P(L)∼e^{-d_{N}DT/L^{2}} and P(A)∼e^{-e_{N}DT/A}, where D is the diffusion coefficient. We calculated all of the coefficients (b_{N},c_{N},d_{N},e_{N}) exactly. Strikingly, we find that b_{N} and c_{N} are independent of N for N≥3 and N≥4, respectively. We find that the large-L (A) tails are dominated by a single, most probable realization that attains the desired L (A). The left tails are dominated by the survival probability of the particles inside a circle of appropriate size. For active particles and at long times, we find that large-L and -A tails are given by P(L)∼e^{-TΨ_{N}^{per}(L/T)} and P(A)∼e^{-TΨ_{N}^{area}(sqrt[A]/T)}, respectively. We calculate the rate functions Ψ_{N} exactly and find that they exhibit multiple singularities. We interpret these as DPTs of first order. We extended several of these results to dimensions d>2. Our analytic predictions display excellent agreement with existing results that were obtained from extensive numerical simulations.

Confined run-and-tumble particles with non-Markovian tumbling statistics

Confined active particles constitute simple, yet realistic, examples of systems that converge into a nonequilibrium steady state. We investigate a run-and-tumble particle in one spatial dimension, trapped by an external potential, with a given distribution g(t) of waiting times between tumbling events whose mean value is equal to τ. Unless g(t) is an exponential distribution (corresponding to a constant tumbling rate), the process is non-Markovian, which makes the analysis of the model particularly challenging. We use an analytical framework involving effective position-dependent tumbling rates to develop a numerical method that yields the full steady-state distribution (SSD) of the particle's position. The method is very efficient and requires modest computing resources, including in the large-deviation and/or small-τ regime, where the SSD can be related to the the large-deviation function, s(x), via the scaling relation P_{st}(x)∼e^{-s(x)/τ}.

Nonequilibrium steady state of trapped active particles

We consider an overdamped particle with a general physical mechanism that creates noisy active movement (e.g., a run-and-tumble particle or active Brownian particle, etc.), that is confined by an external potential. Focusing on the limit in which the correlation time τ of the active noise is small, we find the nonequilibrium steady-state distribution P_{st}(X) of the particle's position X. While typical fluctuations of X follow a Boltzmann distribution with an effective temperature that is not difficult to find, the tails of P_{st}(X) deviate from a Boltzmann behavior: In the limit τ→0, they scale as P_{st}(X)∼e^{-s(X)/τ}. We calculate the large-deviation function s(X) exactly for arbitrary trapping potential and active noise in dimension d=1, by relating it to the rate function that describes large deviations of the position of the same active particle in absence of an external potential at long times. We then extend our results to d>1 assuming rotational symmetry.

Nonequilibrium steady state for harmonically confined active particles

We study the full nonequilibrium steady-state distribution P_{st}(X) of the position X of a damped particle confined in a harmonic trapping potential and experiencing active noise whose correlation time τ_{c} is assumed to be very short. Typical fluctuations of X are governed by a Boltzmann distribution with an effective temperature that is found by approximating the noise as white Gaussian thermal noise. However, large deviations of X are described by a non-Boltzmann steady-state distribution. We find that, in the limit τ_{c}→0, they display the scaling behavior P_{st}(X)∼e^{-s(X)/τ_{c}}, where s(X) is the large-deviation function. We obtain an expression for s(X) for a general active noise and calculate it exactly for the particular case of telegraphic (dichotomous) noise.

Exact position distribution of a harmonically confined run-and-tumble particle in two dimensions

We consider an overdamped run-and-tumble particle in two dimensions, with self-propulsion in an orientation that stochastically rotates by 90^{∘} at a constant rate, clockwise or counterclockwise with equal probabilities. In addition, the particle is confined by an external harmonic potential of stiffness μ, and possibly diffuses. We find the exact time-dependent distribution P(x,y,t) of the particle's position, and in particular, the steady-state distribution P_{st}(x,y) that is reached in the long-time limit. We also find P(x,y,t) for a "free" particle, μ=0. We achieve this by showing that, under a proper change of coordinates, the problem decomposes into two statistically independent one-dimensional problems, whose exact solution has recently been obtained. We then extend these results in several directions, to two such run-and-tumble particles with a harmonic interaction, to analogous systems of dimension three or higher, and by allowing stochastic resetting.

Active random walks in one and two dimensions

We investigate active lattice walks: biased continuous time random walks which perform orientational diffusion between lattice directions in one and two spatial dimensions. We study the occupation probability of an arbitrary site on the lattice in one and two dimensions and derive exact results in the continuum limit. Next, we compute the large deviation free-energy function in both one and two dimensions, which we use to compute the moments and the cumulants of the displacements exactly at late times. Our exact results demonstrate that the cross-correlations between the motion in the x and y directions in two dimensions persist in the large deviation function. We also demonstrate that the large deviation function of an active particle with diffusion displays two regimes, with differing diffusive behaviors. We verify our analytic results with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of an active lattice walker in one and two dimensions.

Stationary nonequilibrium bound state of a pair of run and tumble particles

We study two interacting identical run-and-tumble particles (RTPs) in one dimension. Each particle is driven by a telegraphic noise and, in some cases, also subjected to a thermal white noise with a corresponding diffusion constant D. We are interested in the stationary bound state formed by the two RTPs in the presence of a mutual attractive interaction. The distribution of the relative coordinate y indeed reaches a steady state that we characterize in terms of the solution of a second-order differential equation. We obtain the explicit formula for the stationary probability P(y) of y for two examples of interaction potential V(y). The first one corresponds to V(y)∼|y|. In this case, for D=0 we find that P(y) contains a δ function part at y=0, signaling a strong clustering effect, together with a smooth exponential component. For D>0, the δ function part broadens, leading instead to weak clustering. The second example is the harmonic attraction V(y)∼y^{2} in which case, for D=0, P(y) is supported on a finite interval. We unveil an interesting relation between this two-RTP model with harmonic attraction and a three-state single-RTP model in one dimension, as well as with a four-state single-RTP model in two dimensions. We also provide a general discussion of the stationary bound state, including examples where it is not unique, e.g., when the particles cannot cross due to an additional short-range repulsion.

Condensation transition in the late-time position of a run-and-tumble particle

We study the position distribution P(R[over ⃗],N) of a run-and-tumble particle (RTP) in arbitrary dimension d, after N runs. We assume that the constant speed v>0 of the particle during each running phase is independently drawn from a probability distribution W(v) and that the direction of the particle is chosen isotropically after each tumbling. The position distribution is clearly isotropic, P(R[over ⃗],N)→P(R,N) where R=|R[over ⃗]|. We show that, under certain conditions on d and W(v) and for large N, a condensation transition occurs at some critical value of R=R_{c}∼O(N) located in the large-deviation regime of P(R,N). For R<R_{c} (subcritical fluid phase), all runs are roughly of the same size in a typical trajectory. In contrast, an RTP trajectory with R>R_{c} is typically dominated by a "condensate," i.e., a large single run that subsumes a finite fraction of the total displacement (supercritical condensed phase). Focusing on the family of speed distributions W(v)=α(1-v/v_{0})^{α-1}/v_{0}, parametrized by α>0, we show that, for large N, P(R,N)∼exp[-Nψ_{d,α}(R/N)], and we compute exactly the rate function ψ_{d,α}(z) for any d and α. We show that the transition manifests itself as a singularity of this rate function at R=R_{c} and that its order depends continuously on d and α. We also compute the distribution of the condensate size for R>R_{c}. Finally, we study the model when the total duration T of the RTP, instead of the total number of runs, is fixed. Our analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations, performed using a constrained Markov chain Monte Carlo technique, with precision ∼10^{-100}.

Active noise-driven particles under space-dependent friction in one dimension

We study a Langevin equation describing the stochastic motion of a particle in one dimension with coordinate x, which is simultaneously exposed to a space-dependent friction coefficient γ(x), a confining potential U(x) and nonequilibrium (i.e., active) noise. Specifically, we consider frictions γ(x)=γ_{0}+γ_{1}|x|^{p} and potentials U(x)∝|x|^{n} with exponents p=1,2 and n=0,1,2. We provide analytical and numerical results for the particle dynamics for short times and the stationary probability density functions (PDFs) for long times. The short-time behavior displays diffusive and ballistic regimes while the stationary PDFs display unique characteristic features depending on the exponent values (p,n). The PDFs interpolate between Laplacian, Gaussian, and bimodal distributions, whereby a change between these different behaviors can be achieved by a tuning of the friction strengths ratio γ_{0}/γ_{1}. Our model is relevant for molecular motors moving on a one-dimensional track and can also be realized for confined self-propelled colloidal particles.
