Rheology of granular liquids in extensional flows: Beyond the μ(I)-law

Dynamical yield criterion for granular matter from first principles

We investigate, using a recently developed model of liquid state theory describing the rheology of dense granular flows, how a yield stress appears in granular matter at the yielding transition. Our model allows us to predict an analytical equation of the corresponding dynamical yield surface, which is compared to the usual models of solid fracture. In particular, this yield surface interpolates between the typical failure behaviors of soft and hard materials. This work also underlines the central role played by the effective friction coefficient at the yielding transition.

Extensional Rheology of Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/N,N-dimethylformamide Solutions

Typical extension flow occurs in electrospinning process of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solutions such that researchers focus on extensional rheological behaviors of PVDF solutions. The extensional viscosity of PVDF solutions is measured to know the fluidic deformation in extension flows. The solutions are prepared by dissolving PVDF powder into N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. A homemade extensional viscometric device is used to produce uniaxial extension flows and the feasibility of the viscometric device is verified by applying the glycerol as a test fluid. Experimental results show that PVDF/DMF solutions are extension shinning as well as shear shinning. The Trouton ratio of thinning PVDF/DMF solution is close to three at very low strain rate and then reaches a peak value until it drops to a small value at high strain rate. Furthermore, an exponential model may be used to fit the measured values of uniaxial extensional viscosity at various extension rates, while traditional power-law model is applicable to steady shear viscosity. For 10~14% PVDF/DMF solution, the zero-extension viscosity by fitting reaches 31.88~157.53 Pa·s and the peak Trouton ratio is 4.17~5.16 at applied extension rate of less than 34 s^-1. Characteristic relaxation time is λ~100 ms and corresponding critical extension rate is ε˙c~5 s^-1. The extensional viscosity of very dilute PVDF/DMF solution at very high extension rate is beyond the limit of our homemade extensional viscometric device. This case needs a higher sensitive tensile gauge and a higher-accelerated motion mechanism for test.

Softer than soft: Diving into squishy granular matter

Softer than soft, squishy granular matter is composed of grains capable of significantly changing their shape (typically a deformation larger than 10%) without tearing or breaking. Because of the difficulty to test these materials experimentally and numerically, such a family of discrete systems remains largely ignored in the granular matter physics field despite being commonly found in nature and industry. Either from a numerical, experimental, or analytical point of view, the study of highly deformable granular matter involves several challenges covering, for instance: (i) the need to include a large diversity of grain rheology, (ii) the need to consider large material deformations, and (iii) analysis of the effects of large body distortion on the global scale. In this article, we propose a thorough definition of these squishy granular systems and we summarize the upcoming challenges in their study.

Shear Is Not Always Simple: Rate-Dependent Effects of Flow Type on Granular Rheology

Despite there being an infinite variety of types of flow, most rheological studies focus on a single type such as simple shear. Using discrete element simulations, we explore bulk granular systems in a wide range of flow types at large strains and characterize invariants of the stress tensor for different inertial numbers and interparticle friction coefficients. We identify a strong dependence on the type of flow, which grows with increasing inertial number or friction. Standard models of yielding, repurposed to describe the dependence of the stress on flow type in steady-state flow and at finite rates, are compared with data.
