Hyperuniformity in phase ordering: the roles of activity, noise, and non-constant mobility

Hyperuniformity emerges generically in the coarsening regime of phase-separating fluids. Numerical studies of active and passive systems have shown that the structure factorS(q) behaves asqςforq → 0, with hyperuniformity exponentς = 4. For passive systems, this result was explained in 1991 by a qualitative scaling analysis of Tomita, exploiting isotropy at scales much larger than the coarsening length. Here we reconsider and extend Tomita's argument to address cases of active phase separation and of non-constant mobility, again findingς = 4. We further show that dynamical noise of varianceDcreates a transientς = 2 regime forq^≪q^∗∼Dt[1-(d+2)ν]/2, crossing over toς = 4 at largerq^. Here,νis the coarsening exponent for the domain sizeℓ, such thatℓ(t)∼tν, andq^∝qℓis the rescaled wavenumber. In diffusive coarseningν=1/3, so the rescaled crossover wavevectorq^∗vanishes at large times whend⩾2. The slowness of this decay suggests a natural explanation for experiments that observe a long-livedς = 2 scaling in phase-separatingactivefluids (where noise is typically large). Conversely, ind = 1, we demonstrate that with noise theς = 2 regime survives ast→∞, withq^∗∼D5/6. (The structure factor is not then determined by the zero-temperature fixed point.) We confirm our analytical predictions by numerical simulations of continuum theories for active and passive phase separation in the deterministic case and of Model B for the stochastic case. We also compare them with related findings for a system near an absorbing-state transition rather than undergoing phase separation. A central role is played throughout by the presence or absence of a conservation law for the centre of mass positionRof the order parameter field.

Ordering kinetics in the active Ising model

We undertake a numerical study of the ordering kinetics in the two-dimensional (2D) active Ising model (AIM), a discrete flocking model with a conserved density field coupled to a nonconserved magnetization field. We find that for a quench into the liquid-gas coexistence region and in the ordered liquid region, the characteristic length scale of both the density and magnetization domains follows the Lifshitz-Cahn-Allen growth law, R(t)∼t^{1/2}, consistent with the growth law of passive systems with scalar order parameter and nonconserved dynamics. The system morphology is analyzed with the two-point correlation function and its Fourier transform, the structure factor, which conforms to the well-known Porod's law, a manifestation of the coarsening of compact domains with smooth boundaries. We also find the domain growth exponent unaffected by different noise strengths and self-propulsion velocities of the active particles. However, transverse diffusion is found to play the most significant role in the growth kinetics of the AIM. We extract the same growth exponent by solving the hydrodynamic equations of the AIM.

Effective single component description of steady state structures of passive particles in an active bath

We model a binary mixture of passive and active Brownian particles in two dimensions using the effective interaction between passive particles in the active bath. The activity of active particles and the size ratio of two types of particles are the two control parameters in the system. The effective interaction is calculated from the average force on two particles generated by the active particles. The effective interaction can be attractive or repulsive, depending on the system parameters. The passive particles form four distinct structural orders for different system parameters, viz., homogeneous structures, disordered cluster, ordered cluster, and crystalline structure. The change in structure is dictated by the change in nature of the effective interaction. We further confirm the four structures using a full microscopic simulation of active and passive mixture. Our study is useful to understand the different collective behavior in non-equilibrium systems.

Activity-driven phase separation and ordering kinetics of passive particles

The steady state and phase ordering kinetics in a pure active Brownian particle system are studied in recent years. In binary mixture of active and passive Brownian particles passive particles are used as probe to understand the properties of active medium. In our present study, we study the mixture of passive and active Brownian particles. Here, we aim to understand the steady state and kinetics of small passive particles in the mixture. In our system, the passive particles are small in size and large in number, whereas ABPs are large in size and small in number. The system is studied on a two-dimensional substrate using overdamped Langevin dynamic simulation. The steady state and kinetics of passive particles are studied for various size and activity of active particles. Passive particles are purely athermal in nature and have dynamics only due to bigger ABPs. For small size ratio and activity, the passive particles remain homogeneous in the system, whereas on increasing size ratio and activity they form periodic hexagonal close pack (HCP) spanning clusters in the system. We have also studied the kinetics of growing passive particle clusters. The mass of the largest cluster shows a much slower growth kinetics in contrast to conserved growth kinetics in ABP system. Our study provides an understanding of steady state and kinetics of passive particles in the presence of bigger active particles. The mixture can be thought of as effect of big microorganism moving in passive medium.
