Cluster formation due to repulsive spanning trees in attractively coupled networks

Ensembles of coupled nonlinear oscillators are a popular paradigm and an ideal benchmark for analyzing complex collective behaviors. The onset of cluster synchronization is found to be at the core of various technological and biological processes. The current literature has investigated cluster synchronization by focusing mostly on the case of attractive coupling among the oscillators. However, the case of two coexisting competing interactions is of practical interest due to their relevance in diverse natural settings, including neuronal networks consisting of excitatory and inhibitory neurons, the coevolving social model with voters of opposite opinions, and ecological plant communities with both facilitation and competition, to name a few. In the present article, we investigate the impact of repulsive spanning trees on cluster formation within a connected network of attractively coupled limit-cycle oscillators. We successfully predict which nodes belong to each cluster and the emergent frustration of the connected networks independent of the particular local dynamics at the network nodes. We also determine local asymptotic stability of the cluster states using an approach based on the formulation of a master stability function. We additionally validate the emergence of solitary states and antisynchronization for some specific choices of spanning trees and networks.

Synchronization enhancement subjected to adaptive blinking coupling

Synchronization holds a significant role, notably within chaotic systems, in various contexts where the coordinated behavior of systems plays a pivotal and indispensable role. Hence, many studies have been dedicated to investigating the underlying mechanism of synchronization of chaotic systems. Networks with time-varying coupling, particularly those with blinking coupling, have been proven essential. The reason is that such coupling schemes introduce dynamic variations that enhance adaptability and robustness, making them applicable in various real-world scenarios. This paper introduces a novel adaptive blinking coupling, wherein the coupling adapts dynamically based on the most influential variable exhibiting the most significant average disparity. To ensure an equitable selection of the most effective coupling at each time instance, the average difference of each variable is normalized to the synchronous solution's range. Due to this adaptive coupling selection, synchronization enhancement is expected to be observed. This hypothesis is assessed within networks of identical systems, encompassing Lorenz, Rössler, Chen, Hindmarsh-Rose, forced Duffing, and forced van der Pol systems. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in synchronization when employing adaptive blinking coupling, particularly when applying the normalization process.

Contrarian role of phase and phase velocity coupling in synchrony of second-order phase oscillators

Positive phase coupling plays an attractive role in inducing in-phase synchrony in an ensemble of phase oscillators. Positive coupling involving both amplitude and phase continues to be attractive, leading to complete synchrony in identical oscillators (limit cycle or chaotic) or phase coherence in oscillators with heterogeneity of parameters. In contrast, purely positive phase velocity coupling may originate a repulsive effect on pendulumlike oscillators (with rotational motion) to bring them into a state of diametrically opposite phases or a splay state. Negative phase velocity coupling is necessary to induce synchrony or coherence in the general sense. The contrarian roles of phase coupling and phase velocity coupling on the synchrony of networks of second-order phase oscillators have been explored here. We explain our proposition using networks of two model systems, a second-order phase oscillator representing the pendulum or the superconducting Josephson junction dynamics, and a voltage-controlled oscillations in neurons model. Numerical as well as semianalytical approaches are used to confirm our results.
