Nonequilibrium currents in stochastic field theories: A geometric insight

Unveiling the Phase Diagram and Reaction Paths of the Active Model B with the Deep Minimum Action Method

Nonequilibrium phase transitions are notably difficult to analyze because their mechanisms depend on the system's dynamics in a complex way due to the lack of time-reversal symmetry. To complicate matters, the system's steady-state distribution is unknown in general. Here, the phase diagram of the active Model B is computed with a deep neural network implementation of the geometric minimum action method (gMAM). This approach unveils the unconventional reaction paths and nucleation mechanism in dimensions 1, 2, and 3, by which the system switches between the homogeneous and inhomogeneous phases in the binodal region. Our main findings are (i) the mean time to escape the phase-separated state is (exponentially) extensive in the system size L, but it increases nonmonotonically with L in dimension 1; (ii) the mean time to escape the homogeneous state is always finite, in line with the recent work of Cates and Nardini [Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 098203 (2023)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.130.098203]; (iii) at fixed L, the active term increases the stability of the homogeneous phase, eventually destroying the phase separation in the binodal for large but finite systems. Our results are particularly relevant for active matter systems in which the number of constituents hardly goes beyond 10^{7} and where finite-size effects matter.

Socioeconomic agents as active matter in nonequilibrium Sakoda-Schelling models

How robust are socioeconomic agent-based models with respect to the details of the agents' decision rule? We tackle this question by considering an occupation model in the spirit of the Sakoda-Schelling model, historically introduced to shed light on segregation dynamics among human groups. For a large class of utility functions and decision rules, we pinpoint the nonequilibrium nature of the agent dynamics, while recovering an equilibrium-like phase separation phenomenology. Within the mean-field approximation we show how the model can be mapped, to some extent, onto an active matter field description. Finally, we consider nonreciprocal interactions between two populations and show how they can lead to nonsteady macroscopic behavior. We believe our approach provides a unifying framework to further study geography-dependent agent-based models, notably paving the way for joint consideration of population and price dynamics within a field theoretic approach.

Stationary particle currents in sedimenting active matter wetting a wall

Recently it was predicted, on the basis of a lattice gas model, that scalar active matter in a gravitational field would rise against gravity up a confining wall or inside a thin capillary-in spite of repulsive particle-wall interactions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 048001 (2020)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.124.048001]. In this paper we confirm this prediction with sedimenting active Brownian particles (ABPs) in a box numerically and elucidate the mechanism leading to the formation of a meniscus rising above the bulk of the sedimentation region. The height of the meniscus increases with the activity of the system, algebraically with the Péclet number. The formation of the meniscus is determined by a stationary circular particle current, a vortex, centered at the base of the meniscus, whose size and strength increase with the ABP activity. The origin of these vortices can be traced back to the confinement of the ABPs in a box: already the stationary state of ideal (noninteracting) ABPs without gravitation displays circular currents that arrange in a highly symmetric way in the eight octants of the box. Gravitation distorts this vortex configuration downward, leaving two major vortices at the two side walls, with a strong downward flow along the walls. Repulsive interactions between the ABPs change this situation only as soon as motility induced phase separation (MIPS) sets in and forms a dense, sedimented liquid region at the bottom, which pushes the center of the vortex upwards towards the liquid-gas interface. Self-propelled particles therefore represent an impressive realization of scalar active matter that forms stationary particle currents being able to perform visible work against gravity or any other external field, which we predict to be observable experimentally in active colloids under gravitation.

Entropy production in the nonreciprocal Cahn-Hilliard model

We study the nonreciprocal Cahn-Hilliard model with thermal noise as a prototypical example of a generic class of non-Hermitian stochastic field theories, analyzed in two companion papers [Suchanek, Kroy, and Loos, Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 258302 (2023)10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.258302; Phys. Rev. E 108, 064123 (2023)10.1103/PhysRevE.108.064123]. Due to the nonreciprocal coupling between two field components, the model is inherently out of equilibrium and can be regarded as an active field theory. Beyond the conventional homogeneous and static-demixed phases, it exhibits a traveling-wave phase, which can be entered via either an oscillatory instability or a critical exceptional point. By means of a Fourier decomposition of the entropy production rate, we quantify the associated scale-resolved time-reversal symmetry breaking, in all phases and across the transitions, in the low-noise regime. Our perturbative calculation reveals its dependence on the strength of the nonreciprocal coupling. Surging entropy production near the static-dynamic transitions can be attributed to entropy-generating fluctuations in the longest wavelength Fourier mode and heralds the emerging traveling wave. Its translational dynamics can be mapped on the dissipative ballistic motion of an active (quasi)particle.
