Length-scale competition in the damped sine-Gordon chain with spatiotemporal periodic driving

Experimental investigation of supertransmission for an intrinsic localized mode in a cyclic nonlinear transmission line

In this experimental study of the nonlinear loss mechanism between traveling localized excitation and the underlying extended normal mode spectrum for a 1D lattice, three types of cyclic, electric, nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) are used. They are nonlinear capacitive, inductive, and capacitive+inductive NLTLs. To maintain a robust, steady-state traveling intrinsic localized mode (ILM), a traveling wave driver is used. The ILM loses energy because of a resonance between it and the extended NLTL modes. A wake field excitation is detected directly from ILM velocity experiments by the decrease in ILM speed and by the observation of the wake. Its properties are quantified via a two-dimensional Fourier map in the frequency-wavenumber domain, determined from the measured spatial-time voltage pattern. Simulations support and extend these experimental findings. We find for the capacitive+inductive NLTL configuration, when the two nonlinear terms are theoretically balanced, the wake excitation is calculated to become very small, giving rise to supertransmission over an extended driving frequency range.

Discrete breathers in a forced-damped array of coupled pendula: modeling, computation, and experiment

In this work, we present a mechanical example of an experimental realization of a stability reversal between on-site and intersite centered localized modes. A corresponding realization of a vanishing of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier allows for an experimentally observed enhanced mobility of the localized modes near the reversal point. These features are supported by detailed numerical computations of the stability and mobility of the discrete breathers in this system of forced and damped coupled pendula. Furthermore, additional exotic features of the relevant model, such as dark breathers are briefly discussed.

Spatiotemporal chaos in sine-Gordon systems subjected to wave fields: onset and suppression

The onset of spatiotemporal chaos in a damped sine-Gordon system subjected to a plane wave field as well as its suppression by an additional small-amplitude plane wave field are proposed theoretically and confirmed numerically. The relevance of these findings in the context of nonlinear magnetization waves is discussed.

Kink dynamics in spatially inhomogeneous media: the role of internal modes

The phenomenon of length-scale competition in soliton-bearing equations perturbed by spatially dependent terms [A. Sánchez and A. R. Bishop, SIAM Rev. 40, 579 (1998)] is analyzed from a general viewpoint. We show that the perturbation gives rise to an effective potential for solitons, which consists of wells and barriers. We calculate the effect of these potential features on the solitons, establishing a direct relationship between the maxima, minima, and curvature of the potential with soliton deformations. When the typical wavelength of the perturbation is of the order of the soliton width, these deformations are seen to correspond to the excitation of shape modes and can lead to the dissipation of the soliton kinetic energy and, further, to the impossibility of soliton propagation. Thus, we demonstrate that the mechanism for length-scale competition is related to changes in the dynamics of the internal modes. We study different examples where the perturbation is introduced parametrically and nonparametrically to make it clear that our results apply to a wide class of equations.
