Surface adsorption of branched polymers: Mapping onto the Yang-Lee edge singularity and exact results for three dimensions

Collapse transition of randomly branched polymers: renormalized field theory

We present a minimal dynamical model for randomly branched isotropic polymers, and we study this model in the framework of renormalized field theory. For the swollen phase, we show that our model provides a route to understand the well-established dimensional-reduction results from a different angle. For the collapse θ transition, we uncover a hidden Becchi-Rouet-Stora supersymmetry, signaling the sole relevance of tree configurations. We correct the long-standing one-loop results for the critical exponents, and we push these results on to two-loop order. For the collapse θ' transition, we find a runaway of the renormalization group flow, which lends credence to the possibility that this transition is a fluctuation-induced first-order transition. Our dynamical model allows us to calculate for the first time the fractal dimension of the shortest path on randomly branched polymers in the swollen phase as well as at the collapse transition and related fractal dimensions.

Statistics of ideal randomly branched polymers in a semi-space

We investigate the statistical properties of a randomly branched 3-functional N-link polymer chain without excluded volume, whose one point is fixed at the distance d from the impenetrable surface in a 3-dimensional space. Exactly solving the Dyson-type equation for the partition function Z(N, d )=N(-theta)e(gamma N) in 3D, we find the "surface" critical exponent theta=[Formula: see text], as well as the density profiles of 3-functional units and of dead ends. Our approach enables to compute also the pairwise correlation function of a randomly branched polymer in a 3D semi-space.

Nuclear magnetic relaxation without spin diffusion in polymers at interfaces

We consider theoretically the possibility of solid state NMR experiments with frozen linear polymer chains at interfaces. Three different cases are studied, namely, when the macromolecules are grafted on the surface, when they are adsorbed, and when they are very strongly adsorbed from a melt that is subsequently washed by a good solvent. The latter case is somewhat intermediate between the two former ones. For each case, we consider the relaxation when paramagnetic centers are located on the surface. We show that the shape of the relaxation curves depends critically on the monomer concentration profile, and exhibits characteristic power-law variations.
