Order to Disorder Transition in a Coarsening Two-Dimensional Foam

We quantify the spatiotemporal transformation of a monodisperse and well-ordered monolayer of bubbles, as they undergo Ostwald ripening, by tracking the size polydispersity of the bubbles and local ordering of the foam. After nuclei of disorder appear at random locations, the transition takes place through two successive phases: first, the disordered regions grow while the value of polydispersity increases slowly, then the polydispersity grows rapidly once the disordered zones begin to merge together. The transition is captured by a modified logistic model.

Simulation of defects in bubble clusters

Topological defects in a foam, either isolated (disclinations and dislocations) or in pairs, affect the energy and stress, and play an important role in foam deformation. Surface evolver simulations were performed on large finite clusters of bubbles. These allow us to evaluate the effect of the topology of the defects, and the distance between defects, on the energy and pressure of foam clusters of different sizes. The energy of such defects follows trends similar to known analytical results for a continuous medium.

Multicell simulations of development and disease using the CompuCell3D simulation environment

Mathematical modeling and computer simulation have become crucial to biological fields from genomics to ecology. However, multicell, tissue-level simulations of development and disease have lagged behind other areas because they are mathematically more complex and lack easy-to-use software tools that allow building and running in silico experiments without requiring in-depth knowledge of programming. This tutorial introduces Glazier-Graner-Hogeweg (GGH) multicell simulations and CompuCell3D, a simulation framework that allows users to build, test, and run GGH simulations.

Coarsening of three-dimensional grains in crystals, or bubbles in dry foams, tends towards a universal, statistically scale-invariant regime

We perform extensive Potts model simulations of three-dimensional dry foam coarsening. Starting with 2.25 million bubbles, we have enough statistics to fulfill the three constraints required for the study of statistical scale invariance: first, enough time for the transient to end and reach the scaling state; then, enough time in the scaling state itself to characterize its properties; and finally, enough bubbles at the end to avoid spurious finite size effects. In the scaling state, we find that the average surface area of the bubbles increases linearly with time. The geometry (bubble shape and size) and topology (number of faces and edges), as well as their correlations, become constant in time. Their distributions agree with the data of the literature. We present an analytical model (universal, up to parameters extracted from the simulations) for a disordered foam minimizing its free energy, which agrees with the simulations. We discuss the limitations of the simulations and of the model.
