Antiresonance and localization in quantum dynamics

Interplay between quantum diffusion and localization in the atom-optics kicked rotor

Atom-optics kicked rotor represents an experimentally reliable version of the paradigmatic quantum kicked rotor system. In this system, a periodic sequence of kicks are imparted to the cold atomic cloud. After a short initial diffusive phase the cloud settles down to a stationary state due to the onset of dynamical localization. In this paper, to explore the interplay between localized and diffusive phases, we experimentally implement a modification to this system in which the sign of the kick sequence is flipped after every M kicks. This is achieved in our experiment by allowing free evolution for half the Talbot time after every M kicks. Depending on the value of M, this modified system displays a combination of enhanced diffusion followed by asymptotic localization. This is explained as resulting from two competing processes-localization induced by standard kicked rotor type kicks, and diffusion induced by the half Talbot time evolution. The experimental and numerical simulations agree with one another. The evolving states display localized but nonexponential wave function profiles. This provides another route to quantum control in the kicked rotor class of systems.

Kicked Hall systems: Quantum-dynamical and spectral manifestations of generic superweak chaos

Classical "kicked Hall systems" (KHSs), i.e., periodically kicked charges in the presence of uniform magnetic and electric fields that are perpendicular to each other and to the kicking direction, have been introduced and studied recently. It was shown that KHSs exhibit, under generic conditions, the phenomenon of "superweak chaos" (SWC), i.e., for small kick strength κ a KHS behaves as if this strength were effectively κ^{2} rather than κ. Here we investigate quantum-dynamical and spectral manifestations of this generic SWC. We first derive general expressions for quantum effective Hamiltonians for the KHSs. We then show that the phenomenon of quantum antiresonance (QAR), i.e., "frozen" quantum dynamics with flat quasienergy (QE) bands, takes place for integer values of a scaled Planck constant ℏ_{s} and under the same generic conditions for SWC. This appears to be the most generic occurrence of QAR in quantum systems. The vicinity of QAR is shown to correspond semiclassically to SWC. A global spectral manifestation of SWC is the fact that a scaled QE spectrum as function of ℏ_{s}, at fixed small value of κ/ℏ_{s}, features an approximately "doubled" structure. In the case of standard (cosine) potentials, this structure is that of a universal (parameters-independent) double Hofstadter butterfly. Also, for standard potentials and for small ℏ_{s} (semiclassical regime), the evolution of the kinetic-energy expectation value exhibits a relatively slow quantum-diffusive behavior having universal features. These approximate spectral and quantum-dynamical universalities agree with predictions from the effective Hamiltonian.

Quantum properties of double kicked systems with classical translational invariance in momentum

Double kicked rotors (DKRs) appear to be the simplest nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems featuring classical translational symmetry in phase space (i.e., in angular momentum) for an infinite set of values (the rational ones) of a parameter η. The experimental realization of quantum DKRs by atom-optics methods motivates the study of the double kicked particle (DKP). The latter reduces, at any fixed value of the conserved quasimomentum βℏ, to a generalized DKR, the "β-DKR." We determine general quantum properties of β-DKRs and DKPs for arbitrary rational η. The quasienergy problem of β-DKRs is shown to be equivalent to the energy eigenvalue problem of a finite strip of coupled lattice chains. Exact connections are then obtained between quasienergy spectra of β-DKRs for all β in a generically infinite set. The general conditions of quantum resonance for β-DKRs are shown to be the simultaneous rationality of η,β, and a scaled Planck constant ℏ(S). For rational ℏ(S) and generic values of β, the quasienergy spectrum is found to have a staggered-ladder structure. Other spectral structures, resembling Hofstadter butterflies, are also found. Finally, we show the existence of particular DKP wave-packets whose quantum dynamics is free, i.e., the evolution frequencies of expectation values in these wave-packets are independent of the nonintegrability. All the results for rational ℏ(S) exhibit unique number-theoretical features involving η,ℏ(S), and β.

Classical and quantum transport in one-dimensional periodically kicked systems

This paper is a brief review of classical and quantum transport phenomena, as well as related spectral properties, exhibited by one-dimensional periodically kicked systems. Two representative and fundamentally different classes of systems will be considered: those satisfying the classical Kolmogorov−Arnol’d−Moser scenario and those that do not. The experimental realization of some of these systems using atom-optics methods will be mentioned.

Kicked-Harper model versus on-resonance double-kicked rotor model: from spectral difference to topological equivalence

Recent studies have established that, in addition to the well-known kicked-Harper model (KHM), an on-resonance double-kicked rotor (ORDKR) model also has Hofstadter's butterfly Floquet spectrum, with strong resemblance to the standard Hofstadter spectrum that is a paradigm in studies of the integer quantum Hall effect. Earlier it was shown that the quasienergy spectra of these two dynamical models (i) can exactly overlap with each other if an effective Planck constant takes irrational multiples of 2π and (ii) will be different if the same parameter takes rational multiples of 2π. This work makes detailed comparisons between these two models, with an effective Planck constant given by 2πM/N, where M and N are coprime and odd integers. It is found that the ORDKR spectrum (with two periodic kicking sequences having the same kick strength) has one flat band and N-1 nonflat bands with the largest bandwidth decaying in a power law as ~K(N+2), where K is a kick strength parameter. The existence of a flat band is strictly proven and the power-law scaling, numerically checked for a number of cases, is also analytically proven for a three-band case. By contrast, the KHM does not have any flat band and its bandwidths scale linearly with K. This is shown to result in dramatic differences in dynamical behavior, such as transient (but extremely long) dynamical localization in ORDKR, which is absent in the KHM. Finally, we show that despite these differences, there exist simple extensions of the KHM and ORDKR model (upon introducing an additional periodic phase parameter) such that the resulting extended KHM and ORDKR model are actually topologically equivalent, i.e., they yield exactly the same Floquet-band Chern numbers and display topological phase transitions at the same kick strengths. A theoretical derivation of this topological equivalence is provided. These results are also of interest to our current understanding of quantum-classical correspondence considering that the KHM and ORDKR model have exactly the same classical limit after a simple canonical transformation.

General quantum resonances of the kicked particle

The quantum resonances (QRs) of the kicked particle are studied in a most general framework by also considering arbitrary periodic kicking potentials. It is shown that QR can arise, in general, for any rational value of the Bloch quasimomentum. This is illustrated in the case of the main QRs for arbitrary potentials. In this case, which is shown to be precisely described by the linear kicked rotor, exact formulas are derived for the diffusion coefficients determining the asymptotic evolution of the average kinetic energy of either an incoherent mixture of plane waves or a general wave packet. The momentum probability distribution is exactly calculated and studied for a two-harmonic potential. It clearly exhibits additional resonant values of the quasimomentum and it is robust under small deviations from QR.

General approach to the quantum kicked particle in a magnetic field: quantum-antiresonance transition

The quantum kicked particle in a magnetic field is studied in a weak-chaos regime under realistic conditions, i.e., for general values of the conserved coordinate x(c) of the cyclotron orbit center. The system exhibits spectral structures ["Hofstadter butterflies" (HBs)] and quantum diffusion depending sensitively on x(c). Most significant changes take place when x(c) approaches the value at which quantum antiresonance (exactly periodic recurrences) can occur: the HB essentially "doubles" and the quantum-diffusion coefficient D(x(c)) is strongly reduced. An explanation of these phenomena, including an approximate formula for D(x(c)) in a class of wave packets, is given on the basis of an effective Hamiltonian which is derived as a power expansion in a small parameter. The global quantum diffusion of a two-dimensional wave packet for all x(c) is briefly considered.

Control of dynamical localization

Control over the quantum dynamics of chaotic kicked rotor systems is demonstrated. Specifically, control over a number of quantum coherent phenomena is achieved by a simple modification of the kicking field. These include the enhancement of the dynamical localization length, the introduction of classical anomalous diffusion assisted control for systems far from the semiclassical regime, and the observation of a variety of strongly nonexponential line shapes for dynamical localization. The results provide excellent examples of controlled quantum dynamics in a system that is classically chaotic and offer opportunities to explore quantum fluctuations and correlations in quantum chaos.

Coherent manipulation of quantum delta-kicked dynamics: faster-than-classical anomalous diffusion

Large transporting regular islands are found in the classical phase space of a modified kicked rotor system in which the kicking potential is reversed after every two kicks. The corresponding quantum system, for a variety of system parameters and over long time scales, is shown to display energy absorption that is significantly faster than that associated with the underlying classical anomalous diffusion. The results are of interest to areas of both quantum chaos and quantum control.

Experimental observation of localization in the spatial frequency domain of a kicked optical system

An experimental realization of an optical "kicked" system is presented. It exhibits localization analogous to that of the quantum "kicked-rotor." In the experiment, free space propagating light is periodically kicked by thin sinusoidal phase gratings, which produce high order diffractions and tend to increase the spatial frequency band. The wave property suppresses this diffusive spread. The localization is realized in a regime near anti-resonance of the system, which is also studied theoretically. The behavior in this regime is similar to that of electronic motion in incommensurate potentials. A crucial part of the experimental system is the grating in-phase positioning, which is done by using the Talbot effect.

Quantum resonances and regularity islands in quantum maps

We study analytically as well as numerically the dynamics of a quantum map near a quantum resonance of an order q. The map is embedded into a continuous unitary transformation generated by a time-independent quasi-Hamiltonian. Such a Hamiltonian generates at the very point of the resonance a local gauge transformation described by the unitary unimodular group SU(q). The resonant energy growth is attributed to the zero Liouville eigenmodes of the generator in the adjoint representation of the group while the nonzero modes yield saturating with time contribution. In a vicinity of a given resonance, the quasi-Hamiltonian is then found in the form of power expansion with respect to the detuning from the resonance. The problem is related in this way to the motion along a circle in a (q2 - 1)-component inhomogeneous "magnetic" field of a quantum particle with q intrinsic degrees of freedom described by the SU(q) group. This motion is in parallel with the classical phase oscillations near a nonlinear resonance. The most important role is played by the resonances with the orders much smaller than the typical localization length q << l. Such resonances master for exponentially long though finite times the motion in some domains around them. Explicit analytical solution is possible for a few lowest and strongest resonances.
