Detecting unstable periodic orbits in high-dimensional chaotic systems from time series: reconstruction meeting with adaptation

Detecting unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) in chaotic systems based solely on time series is a fundamental but extremely challenging problem in nonlinear dynamics. Previous approaches were applicable but mostly for low-dimensional chaotic systems. We develop a framework, integrating approximation theory of neural networks and adaptive synchronization, to address the problem of time-series-based detection of UPOs in high-dimensional chaotic systems. An example of finding UPOs from the classic Mackey-Glass equation is presented.

Controlling chaos in spatially extended beam-plasma system by the continuous delayed feedback

In this paper we discuss the control of complex spatio-temporal dynamics in a spatially extended nonlinear system (fluid model of Pierce diode) based on the concepts of controlling chaos in the systems with few degrees of freedom. A presented method is connected with stabilization of unstable homogeneous equilibrium state and the unstable spatio-temporal periodical states analogous to unstable periodic orbits of chaotic dynamics of the systems with few degrees of freedom. We show that this method is effective and allows to achieve desired regular dynamics chosen from a number of possible in the considered system.

Naturally invariant measure of chaotic attractors and the conditionally invariant measure of embedded chaotic repellers

We study local and global correlations between the naturally invariant measure of a chaotic one-dimensional map f and the conditionally invariant measure of the transiently chaotic map f(H). The two maps differ only within a narrow interval H, while the two measures significantly differ within the images f(l)(H), where l is smaller than some critical number l(c). We point out two different types of correlations. Typically, the critical number l(c) is small. The chi(2) value, which characterizes the global discrepancy between the two measures, typically obeys a power-law dependence on the width epsilon of the interval H, with the exponent identical to the information dimension. If H is centered on an image of the critical point, then l(c) increases indefinitely with the decrease of epsilon, and the chi(2) value obeys a modulated power-law dependence on epsilon.

Analyses of transient chaotic time series

We address the calculation of correlation dimension, the estimation of Lyapunov exponents, and the detection of unstable periodic orbits, from transient chaotic time series. Theoretical arguments and numerical experiments show that the Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm can be used to estimate the dimension of an underlying chaotic saddle from an ensemble of chaotic transients. We also demonstrate that Lyapunov exponents can be estimated by computing the rates of separation of neighboring phase-space states constructed from each transient time series in an ensemble. Numerical experiments utilizing the statistics of recurrence times demonstrate that unstable periodic orbits of low periods can be extracted even when noise is present. In addition, we test the scaling law for the probability of finding periodic orbits. The scaling law implies that unstable periodic orbits of high period are unlikely to be detected from transient chaotic time series.

Catastrophic bifurcation from riddled to fractal basins

Most existing works on riddling assume that the underlying dynamical system possesses an invariant subspace that usually results from a symmetry. In realistic applications of chaotic systems, however, there exists no perfect symmetry. The aim of this paper is to examine the consequences of symmetry-breaking on riddling. In particular, we consider smooth deterministic perturbations that destroy the existence of invariant subspace, and identify, as a symmetry-breaking parameter is increased from zero, two distinct bifurcations. In the first case, the chaotic attractor in the invariant subspace is transversely stable so that the basin is riddled. We find that a bifurcation from riddled to fractal basins can occur in the sense that an arbitrarily small amount of symmetry breaking can replace the riddled basin by fractal basins. We call this a catastrophe of riddling. In the second case, where the chaotic attractor in the invariant subspace is transversely unstable so that there is no riddling in the unperturbed system, the presence of a symmetry breaking, no matter how small, can immediately create fractal basins in the vicinity of the original invariant subspace. This is a smooth-fractal basin boundary metamorphosis. We analyze the dynamical mechanisms for both catastrophes of riddling and basin boundary metamorphoses, derive scaling laws to characterize the fractal basins induced by symmetry breaking, and provide numerical confirmations. The main implication of our results is that while riddling is robust against perturbations that preserve the system symmetry, riddled basins of chaotic attractors in the invariant subspace, on which most existing works are focused, are structurally unstable against symmetry-breaking perturbations.

Many-hole interactions and the average lifetimes of chaotic transients that precede controlled periodic motion

We consider n small regions (referred to as the holes) on a chaotic attractor and study the average lifetime it takes for a randomly initiated trajectory to land in their union. The holes are thought of as n possible escape routes for the trajectory. The escape route through one of the holes may be considerably reduced by other holes, depending on their positions. This effect, referred to as shadowing, can significantly prolong the average lifetime. The main result of this paper is the construction and analysis (numerical and theoretical) of the many-hole interactions. They are interpreted as the amount of shadowing between the holes. The "effective range" of these interactions is associated with the largest Lyapunov exponent. The shadowing effect is shown to be very large when the holes are located on n points of an unstable periodic orbit. Considerable attention is paid to this case since it is of interest to the field of controlling chaos.
